The iOS gaming thread

Tower of Fortune is currently free, it's from the slot machine RPG school of iOS gaming and I spent most of yesterday evening playing it. It has a nice GB aesthetic and is extremely compulsive.

Really lovely game this, but totally spoiled imho by the whole 'when you're dead, you're dead' thing. I got as far as the penultimate area, and due to a poor sword choice died. Now I'm never going to play it again, because who is going to sink that much time into the same thing again?

Well, unless you play Tiny Tower or the like I suppose. But not me, that's for sure.

Can anyone recommend any shooting gallery games for iPad that play like Point Blank or Duck Hunt? I've tried 'On Target' and 'Carnival Bullseye' but they were a bit crap...

Hungry Wolf, although that's more of a tapper game with a static crosshair.

Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land is free at the minute and it's a great wee turn based squad shooter. An XCOM type of thing, but not as involved as that would have been. Fun though.

Pleasantly surprised by this. It's a bit simplistic (moreso than the original XCom even) and the UI is a bit fiddly on the iPhone, but the presentation is excellent. Will be interesting to see how Splash Damage's game Rad Soldiers stacks up against it.

...

For fans of Rare-style googly eyes, there's this:

Anybody else playing Song Pop?? Stupidly simple premise of guessing song clips quicker than someone else, but its great fun. Is it the Facebook friends integration that puts people off or are my game tastes too 'mainstream' ?

I've been playing this a fair amount recently. It's basically Draw Something with the most basic form of game attached but it's good fun.

You don't need to link Facebook to it, I just did it by email and username. I'm RevOnline, if anyone cares for a beating in specific genres and embarrassing collapses in others.

So there's this game called Gauge which has just had a 9/10 in Edge. Looks like an ultra minimalist score attack type thing, downloading it now.

I like gauge, but it's not one for playing on public transport. It goes nuts when you get into the higher scores.

Agreed. It's very punishing in a way (I once forgot to stock up on medkits and nearly had to start all over again) but like you say, nicely presented and quite enjoyable. In fact, I just completed it after not being able to put it down all weekend. I'd say this is even worth a look if you missed it for free.

I hate the way it shows you what the other person has guessed, it should be like Trivie and show you how the other player did at the end of the round.

Also why reset the scores after 7 days?

Tried Gauge - its alright, very basic. When I first played i thought I was doing it wrong because it's so basic but its a neat idea. Only 69p for full version.

Basic is the word. I'm not sure I properly 'get it', and am willing to give it a little more time, but how this qualifies as an Edge [9], I'm not sure...

In fact, I've now gone and read the Edge review, and it seems I wasn't missing anything. It is as simple as it looks. Baffling.

I quite like the showing what they guessed - if you're ahead, it makes sense to match their guess, if you're behind go against it. And it makes matches that would be nowhere near much closer. There's no way of telling if they're right, after all, it just gives you a free hint.

The score resetting is strange though. I hoped it was going to add another score in - a bit like tennis, say, I'm winning in weeks 1-0, but games this week 12-4. Or whatever. But no.

It is, but not in the standard way. Do you like Plants vs Zombies? I'm not saying it is like that, but it is similarly removed enough from the usual TD template that I think non-fans of the genre will enjoy it too.

Defender Chronicles was one of the biggest time-drains I have ever come across, by FAR one of my favourite iOS games. It's tower defense, but viewed from the side. With some basic RPG elements built in. It's not your normal Tower Defense, while it's this price - just buy it.

There seem to be 2 games called defender chronicles - which one am I after?
