The iOS gaming thread

I've downloaded it and (thanks to Flub) Triple Town sight unseen.

I will be coming after both of you if they suck ;)

Triple Town is pure love. It's like a Bejeweled game but with *HUGE* amounts of strategy. Initially it's a bit "Holy fuck. How much is there to think about?" but it rapidly becomes second nature and you'll feel the strategies for increasing your score landing after only one or two games. This is exactly the sort of game I love to play on this sort of device. It's the perfect iPad puzzle game.

You could probably go on Metacritic now and find stupid one star user reviews for all kinds of beloved games on all manner of platforms. I know you're trying to convince everyone that iOS is the herald of the gaming apocalypse, but I don't think Ghost Trick has anything to worry about (beyond the boneheaded decision to release it in the Western App Stores so far after the Japanese release)

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but I've just spotted that the latest update to Ticket to Ride has added Game Centre support and asynchronous online multiplayer. This makes me a very happy bunny, seeing as the lack of multiplayer was the only blight on an otherwise perfect conversion.

Anyone wanting some turn-based train action can find me on Game Centre as SomethingWitty.

Choo-choo!! :)

I was tempted to neg you for stealing my lunchtime ;) - downloaded it and "just a quick go" turned out to be anything but.

Horribly addictive - but great for it.

Anyone playing Off The Leash? Seems quite fun, not sure if it's a keeper yet but it's really charming.

One thing that bugged me slightly: I'm pretty sure it's a freemium game, but the app description has it down as both a Free App A Day and Openfeint Free App of the Day. If it's free, it's free, surely? Just seemed a bit unnecessarily disingenious to encourage people to download it asap...

Downloaded Enscripted and am absolutely loving it. The January 28th one is driving me nuts, though - I generally start by working out any one letter words, or anything after punctuation, and then use that as a starting point, but that one's all decent length words and I've no idea where to begin. Just to make it worse, then the two following that I polished off in under three and a half minutes.

Ah well, 17 minutes and counting, I'm not doing February's ones until I've worked it out though...

I also hate tilt controls, and am also playing (and enjoying) that. And Temple Run. Again.

I got a non-gamer friend to download a few decent freebies the other day (those, Jetpack Joyride, etc) because she only had (and was addicted to) Jelly Defense, and now she's also on GameCenter so I felt the need to download and play (and beat her on) them myself.

She's beating me on both, of course (despite having somehow not noticed that there was a time limit on Off The Leash), and I was finally having a decent game on OTL yesterday when my battery died.

Yes... I spent a long time on that till I decided to write a brute force dictionary cipher replacement system in excel.

Kinda takes the fun out of the game... but it was a fun little programming exercise...

There's a few things you can look for with regards to patterns, this will specifically help you in that puzzle so maybe don't check this unless you want a tiny tiny hint towards a starting point.

Things like more than one word ending in the same pattern of three letters, the chances are that they're "ing."

I'm STILL struggling on this 300 quote. Over half an hour now

Normally if the quote fails me there's still the title to work with, but not so here and the quote's so short that there's hardly anything to work with pattern-wise. Two of the last three words begin with the same letter so there's only a few candidates there, and the last word forms the middle part of one of the other four letter words, but that's about it and it's not enough! I'm tempted to rent the film but it kind of feels like cheating.

If in WW2 the Germans had sent their top-secret messages in the form of coded quotes from the yet-to-be-made movie "300," I reckon I'd be speaking German right now.

Just went back on and had a look, and that's the only thing I'd already got worked out.

Bizarrely, I looked at it again for a few minutes just now and suddenly it just clicked and I managed it all in one fell swoop. I have no idea how, of course, but I think it's fair to assume that all the alcohol I've consumed must've somehow helped...

You know, Ghost trick is impressive and all but it does have a fairly serious problem I can summerise thusly.

"You can now do a thing"

"I can do a thing?"

"Yes, a thing"

"A thing?"

"Yes"

"I can do a thing!"

"You do the thing like this"

"Like this?"

"Yes, like this"

"I can do this thing like this!"

"Now try doing this thing!"

"Doing this thing?"

"Yes! Hurry because time is ticking down"

"Ticking down?"

"Yes! Time is ticking down? Now hurry"

*allows you to tap something on screen

*cut to another 5 minutes of unskippable dialog largely repeating the above.

I'm hoping that's just the tutorial (which I'm now through), as otherwise I'm really enjoying it.

It should have put you well on the way to getting the title of the film!

Today's is quite hard. Struggling.

You'd have thought so, wouldn't you?!

The February 2nd one took me even longer, despite being a film I own and almost watched again the other day (partially because I was trying to do it last night whilst still drunk and watching the basketball), but now I've managed to do them all of bar today's, on which I am also stuck...
