The iOS gaming thread

Have they stopped making good games on iOS? This thread used to be brimming with recommendations of games coming out or sales of older titles but it's been very sparse lately.

I did get that baseball game, seems pretty good but I'm hopeless at batting.

Yeah, Triple Town is great, until those bouncing ninja bears show up. :(

I've become massively addicted to Quarrel. I know it's been out for a while, but I'd never heard of it. It's brilliant- a mix between Scrabble and Risk, but with a real nice style to it. Downloaded the Lite version and paid for the full one after one game.

Triple Town is brilliant but the coins completely break it as a score-chasing game, and since that's all it is, it renders the whole thing pretty pointless.

If you start a game with 20,000 coins in the bank you'll get a much higher score than if you start with 0 coins, because you'll be able to buy a few robots when you need them, etc. This means that you have to just keep saving and saving coins through ten games that you know are completely pointless before you blow them all in one (hopefully) awesome game, and then play ten more pointless ones. It just doesn't really work, for me, and it's a shame 'cause the game really is very good aside from that. If every game started with 0 coins and you could only use what you earned through playing it'd be fine, but having to save them through multiple games just feels broken to me.

It's probably the best example there is of a developer making IAPs that actually break the core game.

What's the difference between the Lite and full fat one? Also, does anyone know if there are plans for a multiplayer update?

It's not brand new, but I've really been enjoying Kingdom Rush. It's a pretty slick tower defence game that you can (naturally) play for free on Kongregate.com if you don't want to spend money seeing what it is like.

I stayed up far too late last night playing Where's My Water. I'm hooked.

The update to this is great - two level packs with a slightly new play-style, and some "challenges" which re-use old levels in some fun ways. Well worth the 69p.

Aye, I bought that as soon as it came out. Considering I got the game for free, it was money very well spent.

One thing I found a bit weird with the new challenges though, is that you have to select the challenge before you complete it; just playing the level and fulfiling the criteria doesn't award you comlpletion. Just seems a bit odd why that's necessary.

Lite only gives you a couple of easy levels, iirc. It's well worth buying, Quarrel is brilliant.

The Lite one just has the first mode unlocked- Quick Match. The full version gets Make Match, Domination and Daily Challenge unlocked. Domination is where the real fun is at- working your way through islands, taking out on different challenges, staring at the screen in horror as the clock runs out (each battle is timed) and you realise that your mind has gone for a walk... :)

Oh god, Quarrel is totally my game. When it was mentioned here before I somehow got the impression it was online multiplayer and you had to have half an hour to sit and play it. Duh, turns out it's not.

All is well with the world now though, I have downloaded it. Just beat the daily challenge over lunch, finishing with CRIPPLED. Wa-hah.
