The iOS gaming thread

Noodlecake's new game, Lunar Racer, just came out yesterday. After the wonder of Super Stickman Golf, it's a little disappointing, but it's still a bit of fun for 69p. Either way, I almost feel guilty getting so much playtime out of Super Stickman Golf for free, so I'm happy to finally buy one of their titles.

So then, inspired by the games that were better in the olden days thread. What's the news on point and clickers on iOS?

I've played and enjoyed:

Monkey Island 1&2

Beneath a Steel Sky

Broken Sword 1&2

I didn't get on with Hector and I tried Simon the Sorcerer and found the control scheme lacking.

What else is there that will tickle that obscure object used with random item itch?

Touch Detective.

It's a fantastic port of the DS game and is free for the first couple of chapters and then you can buy the rest if you like, which is a good way of selling it.

Can see there is button based fun in super crate thing but touch controls are hideous, also not sure if its controls or not but collision detection seems off too.

Not going to moan about wasting 69p but cant see the rave reviews this been getting all over for its ios incarnation.

The collision certainly isn't helping. You'd think they'd be tolerant as its on the phone but it's brutal.

On the first arena you feel like you should be able to jump up onto a higher ledge over an enemy but you just catch them and die.

Also, is MID schizophrenic?

Palm Heroes 2 (or Heroes of Might and Magic 2) appears to be on the iPhone. I want it. But I don't want to risk it being shit. Anyone else played it?

I, on the other hand, am schizophrenic. I conceded to my lack of discipline and an iTunes voucher for Christmas meant Palm Heroes 2 was swiftly procured. It is as you would expect: a low-rent Heroes 2. Graphically competent in still images and not much by way of motion — much like its inspiration. Some units have been removed, others included and building upgrades are eliminated but core units possess elements of their superiors anyway (archers and elves have double attacks as standard, for example). The interface is wholly inadequate, the controls sometimes fiddly although much to do with the small details.

It comes with twenty maps, with a touted additional hundred available via in-app purchases, and no campaign mode. It is currently discounted at £1.50 from a usual £3 and, in all honesty, I bought it on a whim and it will stay a curiosity. But I oft-have cravings to relive my early days of PC gaming and this will suffice more than adequately. Get it now or don't get it at all.

Is there not a speed setting like their other games?

There is but you need to beat it first before the option unlocks. I've just beaten it, it's very Kairosoft but probably the best thing they've done since Game Dev Story (although I've not played Grand Prix Story).

Just discovered that on Super Crate Box you're supposed to stop the enemies going into the fire because they come back as the red ones, hence why it can get so out of control when you've only managed to notch up 7 crates, the enemies are just adding up.

It all makes a LOT more sense now..

You know I played that for over an hour last night and never realised that.

How ace is Super Crate Box using the iCade though? Loving it even though I'm dreadful at it (although now I partly know why lol). Purchase even more justified (although to be honest playing Pacman for ipad and Bombjack on imame on it was enough for me already).

How cute is that jr iCade though - although the pad type interface looks more practical from a mobility point of view.

Just need more developers to support it for iOS games now...
