The iOS gaming thread

Super Crate Box iOS is due out tonight. I just tried to buy it (69p) but the App Store said it's being 'modified' - Vlambeer's Twitter says it'll be ready in a couple of hours, so I'll give it a go in the morning.

I don't know what the reality of it will be. I never found the original to be frustrating and was always happy enough to die over and over. So long as that doesn't change with touch controls, it should be a nice little game to have.

gave this a go aaannnnnddd... yep, i never learn - touch controls are fucking shit for any kind of twitch gaming. i'm sure the game is a highly enjoyable marvel and that i'm missing out on something incredible but after three minutes i had enough. touch controls man, the worst.

its actually pretty simple, balls appear and gates appear. You combine or split balls to the size of the gates.

It is a great game. Art style is wonderful and the sound effects/ music is quite nice.

I loved it until Sector 14 and then I found it impossible. Like I cannot, in however many tries, get past that Sector.

Trainyard was the last iOS I completed. Such a great little puzzle game. Where you direct coloured trains from one gate to another. Sometimes combining primary colour trains to make secondary colour trains. and so on. It's wonderful.

You are a twat. I had a lot of work to do today. My toilet breaks have now increased exponentially...

I've had a few essays to write over the last few days, they're still not done and they're due in tomorrow morning. Unfortunately, on Tuesday I thought "it seems harmless enough, let's check this 'Temple Run' thing out."

What did you do?

Exited, force closed the app and started app again. Was still having connection issues, after that tried it again and it had solved itself weirdly enough. TBH I really hate all these external 'score keepers'. Too many of them and all your mates are on Game Center anyway.

Was this the Kairosoft game that appeared on Android a few months ago? Any impressions?

It is. An hour in and I'm feeling it's tentacles tightening around my brain. It doesn't explain much so you learn as you go, figuring out the resources, how to train etc, but if you've played a Kairosoft before you'll get a handle on things soon enough. There is a complete and total disregard for realism so it is diametrically opposite to FMH and all the more refreshing for it.

I've actually found it tough to get sucked into a Kairosoft game since Game Dev Story.

Tried Hot Springs Story, Pocket Academy, Grand Prix Story. None of these really pulled me in. I was hopeful for GP Story but alas no.

I'm really hoping one about football takes me in.

Why aren't more of you drunkards on my Game Centre friendlist playing Zen Pinball? Sorcerer's Lair, the free table, is amazing.

I don't play it on the phone, but if you like pinners, you have an ipad and you don't have this free game, you are plum loco.

Still busted for me.

Regarding score keepers, I totally agree. I just want Game Centre.

What device are you using?

It's not working on iPhone 3GS with certain OS versions, apparently they're aware of the issue and will have an update out soon. Fingers crossed.

Regarding score stuff, a lot of people still use OpenFeint because you get Game Center support 'for free' by implementing it so might as well have both. The others seem to have mostly died off (except I've seen EA starting to pimp Origin through iOS, LOL). My main complaint with these systems and Game Center in particular is that so many games try to connect to them during real time gameplay, which causes frame rate snags. And there doesn't seem to be any way to completely turn Game Center off. When I'm playing games on the tube I don't want it to spaz out for 30 seconds looking for a network.

That'll be me then, still on 4.3.4 because I was testing things. :(

Edit: reply to my twitter query:

@thebag1981 We're fixing that right now. We're submitting an update to Apple as we speak! :)

I buy every Kairosoft game on day 1, wasnt sure about this footy one initially as in their usual style nothing much gets explained, then I realised it was an hour later so looks a good un.

I'd say its more game dev, mega mall grand prix than the towns, hot spings or school one.

I must say that the actual football matches start to wear a bit thin after a while. Very little involvement and very samey action. It should have a skip button and calculate the result which would basically achieve the same thing.

Just to tip you in the wrong direction, the missus got me one for Xmas and it is indeed a thing of loveliness.

Emulators work very nicely on it too, finally a decent sized screen set up for SNES entertainment whilst the she's watching the only way is oh god knows on the telly :)

Yep, the icade is so joyful that I had to buy a second one, which is now on my desk in the office. I thought that would be a good thing, but now it's just sat there staring at me, taunting me that I'm way too busy to actually do anything with it....yet! Maybe I should try Super Crate Box for a minute or two, surely it wouldn't hurt, or maybe Juno First. Must.....resist.....temptation :/

So then, inspired by the games that were better in the olden days thread. What's the news on point and clickers on iOS?

I've played and enjoyed:

Monkey Island 1&2

Beneath a Steel Sky

Broken Sword 1&2

I didn't get on with Hector and I tried Simon the Sorcerer and found the control scheme lacking.

What else is there that will tickle that obscure object used with random item itch?
