The iOS gaming thread

Question for you all, I've found some time to do any update to my iOS game so I'm adding some achievements. Some of these achievements will be for things I can tell the player has already done, should I unlock those straight away or make the player do them again?

I think they should just unlock.

If they're going to just unlock, you should make sure that the player knows they're unlocked, but ensure you handle having many simultaneous achievements in an elegant way. Fifteen chimes and pop ups in a row the first time they launch the app after the update is not going to make you popular.

I'm playing IB2, I never played IB. Hey, it's dumb fun! But you all know that.

What I don't know is, what's the point of mastering weapons? Presumably you're always questing for money to buy better weapons that supersede whatever you've mastered, and as far as I can tell you can't sell weapons you've mastered (or not mastered)...or can you? As you can see, I'm confused, help please!

Also, anything else that I should know that would be obvious if I'd played IB?

What about this then folks, any help please?

EDIT: Another thing I would like to know, if I have a shield with a drop items perk jewel attached, and I am using duel swords so technically not using the shield, do I still get the perk?

Mastering weapons is basically the game's way of level-capping you. You can only gain experience to level up while you are mastering a weapon or armour, if you have a weapon equipped that has already been mastered, you will gain less xp at the end of the battle. They've structured it so that the level cap is at the point where you have mastered all the weapons and gear.

That's how it worked in the first game anyway, not tried the new one yet. Short version - always try to have un-mastered equipment on you if you want to level up properly.

I see...so essentially it's a way to 'force' you to spend money, which is essentially another way to encourage you to buy money with IAPs. :sherlock:

To be fair, much like someone else in this thread, I completed the first Infinity Blade and never bought any in-game money. I bought and mastered everything.

You end up making a ridiculous amount of money near the end due to some of the gear that will put extra points in making more money.

Not sure about te dual sword/ shield question. But I thought the point of mastering a weapon was I get you xp/ which therefore increased your own level. And when you level up I think you get points to use on upgrading your health/amour/damage/magic.

But I could be wrong

You all know Donut Games, right? The excellent Donut Games? Who make really excellent games? You've probably played Cat Physics, you should have done anyway, it's brilliant.

The equally brilliant Cave Bowling is currently FREE. You know what to do.

In case you don't know what to do, here are some instructions:

1) GO AND DOWNLOAD IT RIGHT NOW.

2) ???

3) There's no real way to make a profit, but it's a really good game so it's still fun.

I feel like I'm in a bit of a rut with iPhone gaming at the minute, the last game to really grab me and keep me playing for any prolonged period was Tiny Wings.

All I play at the minute is Words with Friends and Poker Pals.

Has anyone got any suggestions for something to get my teeth into? Whether it be a story driven game like Broken Sword, or a high-score game akin to Doodle Jump or Tiny Wings, I'll try anything.

Any of the Kairosoft games!

Ones I've really enjoyed: Jetpack Joyride, Sword & Poker, Reckless Getaway, Trainyard, 1000 Heroz, Zookeeper, Tiger Woods.

Everyone's comments about Infinity Blade make it sound like Skyrim. I'm gonna download it.

I lost all my progress on IB2 - anyone else had this? Don't really want to begin again if it's a major bug.

Yeah, happened to me too. I'd been playing it on my iPhone 4, then booted it up for the first time on my iPad and it started from the beginning of the rebirth as opposed to the prologue bit. Which I thought was odd. So I fired it up on the iPhone 4 again and it also started on the rebirth, as opposed to where I'd been last time I'd been playing. Which I thought was fucking infuriating.

Ticket to Ride has recently sucked me in good 'n' proper.

Exactly what I'd done. Gah!

I wanted to write a bit of a love letter to the iOS devices for the way they've consistently delivered as a serious gaming device. I don't have as much time as I'd like to dedicate to console gaming and in the past this has resulted in a general lack of interest in games in general during quiet times. With my iPhone I can now "fill the gaps" between bouts of home console gaming and this maintains my passion and curiosity and keeps me coming back into the Discussion folder on this forum, and ultimately turning on my console again and again. Not that this should sound like iOS games are merely gap fillers - some of my most played games of all time are now iPhone games and the integration of the Game Centre is absolutely commendable. Some games that I've been enjoying that are so worth their minuscule asking price:

Angry Birds / Seasons / Rio

Cut The Rope / Seasons / Experiments

Fruit Ninja / Puss In Boots

Jetpack Joyride

Tiny Wings

Tilt To Live

Land-A-Panda

Whale Trail

Magnetic Billiards

Quell / Reflect

Gum Drop!

Plants vs Zombies

Flight Control

#Sworcery

Papa Sangre

Those are my highlights - the last two I'm really enjoying as more serious ventures, the rest are absolutely perfect time sinks. Unfortunately my OCD nature ensures that anything with an achievement system in it gets about 10 times more attention than anything else, but still ...

It's just so fucking awesome.

I find it's healthy to have one "time-sink" game and one "adventure" game going at any given time. Keeps you focussed and picking up on the nuance of games, and means you actually do manage to get completion. I wouldn't have really appreciated Infinity Blade if I'd just pissed about with it for a couple of days before moving onto Dead Space, for example.
