Jetpack Joyride takes the old formula of one button play cave dodger/avoider and sprinkles it with an addictive quality.

Those "missions" are very clever, i mean some are dull (get xxx coins) but some make you play a different way.. die within 300-400 m , high five 10 scientists, close calls with zappers

all make you play the game a subtly different way each time.

Embarrasingly I have a "to buy" list (for when I get a cheapo voucher, it has about 20 quids worth of stuff on it right now) and JJ was on it so now I save I suppose but dev gets nothing.. oops.. same goes for Reckless Getaway.

When I do get a voucher is there any way to either

a) "tip" the makers (probably impossible)

b) buy it for someone else i.e. gift them the app like on Steam?

Buy something from the in-app store if you want to give a little something to the devs. That's what I do.

Anyone got any definite recommendations from that huge list of sale games?

Just picked up an iPad, I've grabbed Dead Space, Civ Rev and Pirates. I also have Ticket to Ride, Scribblenauts, Groove Coaster, Machinarium, Sword and Sworcery, Jetpack Joyride, Reckless Getaway.

What else is good in amongst that lot?

Is it a good game? I've never played it before and I'm wondering how difficult it is to get into,

It's quite limited as a Civ game; rudimentary AI, not too many surprises as far as a challenge go and zooming out too far makes the game eerily jarring (much like the 360 version). Visually it's a tight squeeze on the screen, but excusable with the volume of particulars to take into consideration - just think how difficult it could potentially be if it were more complicated. It will take a while to navigate the menus, sending troops, yada yada.

But as far as I can tell, it's a uglier carbon copy of the home console versions and if you're looking for a 4X game that'll last a couple of hours at most, this is a fine example. It's gotten high praise in this topic before and there is a free (and exceptionally easy) demo if you want to explore how you might respond to the menu system. Should you buy it, worse comes to worse? Some dick on the internet saved you from scoffing another bag of crisps, you fat bastard.

Also, I can't remember if it was you who inquired but what the hell; Shining Force, like all Mega Drive conversions on the iPhone, use that fucking awful visual d-pad and buttons. They're obtrusive, inaccurate and generally a bit shit but if there's ever a genre that can excuse all of those issues, it's a SRPG. So for all intents and purposes, it controls fine. Just look before you select a move square.
