The iOS gaming thread

I think they both tap into the same part of the brain. They're both addictive and compulsive. GDS is clearly the better game. In fact Kairosoft games full stop are all great.

GDS is the better game by default, because it's a game. Tiny Tower isn't a game, it's more of a toy. Someone elsewhere likened it to a plant; you water it every day and watch it grow, and there's enjoyment to be found in that. It's not a game though and has nothing in common with GDS, really.

oh, i love Tiny Tower. i didn't expect to because it's quite tricky to control and the UI doesn't seem designed for iPhone, but i'm quite addicted to it.

TT is designed specifically for the iPhone screen. Game Dev Story and Tiny Tower are both Alert Box type games, but also well different enough to play. I enjoyed Pocket Academy as well, Kairosoft games are ports from a mouse controlled platform but it doesn't really get in the way, just irritates occasionally.

Civilisation Revolution, now there's a game with a tricky control system, but fuck yeah after the first 15 minutes of not knowing what the fuck to do it was brilliant.

Game Dev Story is amazing. i haven't put it down since my last post :0

i had forgotten how much i love this type of game. i used to spend days on Theme Park and Hospital as a nipper.

Heh, well that's good news, there's tons of that sort of game on iOS. Game Dev Story is definitely the most immediately compelling, I keep meaning to drop some science on why too.

Didn't you post a link to something recently? About GDS I mean.

I mentioned Game Dev Story when I did a thing on Tiny Tower back in July. I haven't done anything specific about it.

Played Mage Gauntlet for 15 minutes or so:

Ok it's very 16bit, lovely, etc. Thoughts so far:

The icon is horrible

The pixel art isn't very good. It's *nearly* good, but it's not.

It should have a scanline effect

The writing is woeful and there is too much of it

The intro is 10x too long for the format - we had time and wanted epic adventures when we got 1 game a year for 40pounds. Now we get 1 game a day. Witness the proliferation of 'highlight style' TV shows, where you're basically watching a set of signposted moments set to music, with the boring bits sped up and/or chopped out. This game has retained some of the wrong and outdated elements of 'old skool'.

I've managed to run around, through a few rooms and nothing has happened. A wizard appeared and disappeared. The interaction between him and my character seemed like it was written by a robot with little understanding of human communication.

The thing to remember with iOS is that you are always only one button press away from quitting. I absolutely love the idea of re imagining or creating games in the old nostalgic styles of the Super Nes days. I really want to like this game and I will keep playing if I find time, but when games makers make stuff like this and don't even seem to be aware of these small and obvious things I find it so infuriating.

Nice to see Civ Rev get a mention.

It's my most played iOS game and hardly ever comes up in game recommendations or best game lists.

Such is the fast moving nature of the platform. I've long since deleted it, but I played it through on every difficulty. Well well worth it.

i got Superbrothers Swords and Sworcery instead because i'm blunted :sherlock:

Set a stopwatch to record how long it takes you to get pissed off by the hipster vibe.
