The iOS gaming thread

Grand prix is good, but nowhere near as addictive as Game Dev story was for me.

I concur. I think the problem is, that there isn;t enough variety or progression. Once you win the Forumla one championship, what else is there? In Game Dev Story, you are constantly trying new variations to try and beat your sales record.

I'm many pages late with this, but I haven't been able to put down Jetpack Joyride, despite not really liking endless games too much. The missions do make all the difference. Having said that, i've clocked it now and don't really want to do the prestige thing. Do you lose all your coins and jetpacks and all? The Rainbow one is amazing.

When do people reckon we're going to see the next Infinity Blade or something running on the Rage engine? It seems to have gone awfully quiet on the graphics power front

There's Gears of War Shadowgun coming, which runs on the Unity engine and looks quite nice...

I just don't get how fast to move around and how that effects the race, meaning I end up 'pot luck'ing my way through the races.

Me too to extent. I take care on the corners but that's about it. I'm improving all the time so I must be doing something right.

Whats the multiplayer like?

Did anyone else get Edge EX? Holy shitting hell that last level is hard! There's also one cube which I can't figure out how to get. I never played the original game, but I found this game got really hard towards the end, and although I guess most levels are designed to be replayed, I found once the difficulty set in, it wasn't as much fun to play. Good concept - I guess I might enjoy the original more. Maybe I'll look into it eventually.

I just finished the original, I'm going to get into Extended next week. It's challenging but never particularly frustrating, I got all of the Prisms on my first playthrough without too many diversions. You'd probably like it but it doesn't look nearly as good.

Edit- It's just been updated to use the new engine from Extended. I should've waited a week.

Saw this new title called Mage Gauntlet today on PocketGamer, out soon. I've created a thread for it, as I think it merits one.

I'd also say that we might want to consider making threads for some of the more prominent games here. This thread moves really quickly and it's easy to miss out on stuff. Ascension certainly merited its own thread.

Has anyone tried Minter's new one yet? Despite him always calling it Goat Goes Up if you search for that on the app store you won't find it. Search for Goatup or Llamasoft instead. He's changed the name for some reason.

I really like it, I think it's his best iOS work yet design-wise. Being Jeff, though, he's still managed to find some sloppy way to b0rk it up - it runs at about half the speed on 3rd-gen machines that it does on 4th-gen ones, so the leaderboard is a massively uneven playing field. My (3rd-gen) iPod Touch highscore is about 50 times my iPhone 4 one. At least it maintains a local device highscore so you can compete fairly against yourself, but it messes the online scores right up. If you're going to use so many fancy shader effects or whatever that a 3rd-gen machine can't handle a Doodle Jump clone, bloody well detect the hardware and either switch some of them off until it can handle it, or have separate leaderboards.

Any dock with ONE BUTTON is doooooooomed.

It's a bit disheartening to see these icade-alikes popping up, but not adhering to the same interface standard. There's plenty of arguments for (and against, if you're a Jobsian acolyte) physical controls for iOS, but the last thing it nerds is lots of competing standards.

iCade support is growing, if everyone stuck to the same standard we might actually see more decent products coming out.
