The iOS gaming thread

I love TD games but try as I might I can't find anything that comes close to Geodefense.

I think it's basically the perfect example of it's type.

I've come to the conclusion that it's one of the best games ever made on any platform. It stakes its claim right from the beginning by being much more difficult than other TD games, even the easy levels. I actually don't like calling it a Tower Defence title. It is of course but it's just its own thing. Like you say nothing comes close, apart from possibly Star Patrol on DSiware. Not even GeoDefense Swarm is anywhere near as good (I can't get into that).

Have you played Defence Grid? Albeit not on iOS...

That's the best TD game I've ever played. Tons of level variation, sometimes enemies will have set paths, or more than one path, or a huge open area that you can create a path for them with towers. Loads of enemy variation too, and a really awesome scoring/lives mechanic. Way more depth than "if an enemy reaches your base you lose one life."

Anyone get iBlast moki 2? I enjoyed the original (up to a point) and was wondering had anyone given the 2nd one a go.

No, but i'm going to while it's cheap. I did like the first one, up to a point as well. Was your point making a bridge by any chance?

Am I the only one who just gets nothing from Tower Defence games? I just don't see the appeal. That being said, I've never played one for more than 5 minutes because they don't "grab" me. Is there some kind of subtlety I'm missing?

No! I don't like them at all. I almost wish we had a seperate thread for all Tower Defense, Strategy, Management and RPGs. Anything with stats and resource management more taxing than an ammo count bores me to tears.

I don't like Tower Defence as a genre, so I'd never bothered with GeoDefense. I only picked it up 'cos it was free a while back, and only tried it the other day 'cos I fancied trying something different.

It's great. I can see myself losing a lot of time to it. I'd describe it as "Tower Defense for people who don't like Tower Defense".

I think there was a rock in the middle of the screen with a plank across it, protruding over both ends, that you had to flip round. I got stuck on it having previously got 3 stars (or whatever the rank was) on all the levels leading up to this one.

Downloading 2 now. EDIT: can't it's over 20mb

Yeah I certainly haven't invested as much time in many other games.

Too many TD games get sucked into fancy animation and backgrounds and in the end you can't see what's going on clearly enough, but it's just perfect in GeoDefense.

OK I'll stop sucking it off now, but it really is bloody sensational.

I've got Snes, MD and MAME emulators up and running with loads of games to play :)

Anyone tried the PSX emulator yet? Apparently, it's not too shabby...

I've got the Snes, Mame and MD as well. I've been trying to get the MSX.emu, but it's still down for some reason.

And i've ordered me one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Catz-Tatsunoko-Capcom-Arcade-FightStick/dp/B0032ISZL8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1313771221&sr=8-1

For use in a little project i found on youtube:

What did you hate about it?

The lack of control. The trial and error. Having to manage resources, even the minimal amount you have to do on that training level. I think mostly it's my lack of patience. All you really do on the level is place 6 or 7 towers, but it takes ages for it play out. And one small mistake on a tough level means you have to do it all again. That would drive me insane.

The only game of vaguely that type i've ever finished was advance wars, and while I did enjoy it, it was enormously stressful. I wouldn't do it again.

I understand what you mean, but it's not really true of Geo Defense. It's Trial and Error in so much as you might try a different strategy each time, but not in the logic behind which towers to use. The tutorials are incredibly helpful in that regard.

It's one of the most satisfying feelings ever when you've been stuck on a level and finally crack it.
