Question for anyone who’s played FFT War Of The Lions before: I have heard that it has a few serious difficulty spikes. I’m OK at these sort of games but not very good. Can I essentially grind my way through those spikes, if I have to?

Essentially, yes. But make sure you use multiple save slots, as there are some times when you have to face multiple battles in a row, without being able to leave the area and grind random battles.

If you're worried about difficulty, probably the best course of action is to make sure your black mage knows lots of spells, have them learn white magic and time magic, and unlock the calculator class. Basically, once you have a calculator, you can cast any magic spell on every enemy of a certain level in the opposing team, heal all of your own guys of a certain level, etc, without even needing much MP, IIRC. Waaay overpowered. ;) You can also turn some of your knights into ninjas, to have them learn dual wield, and then turn them back into knights, give them two swords, and watch everything die super quickly as they attack twice per turn.

In Zombie Gunship is anyone else obsessed with trying to snipe zombies when they are attacking a survivor? It's cost me so many games and I know it would make more sense to ignore them but I still keep trying to pick the wee fuckers off with my gatling gun every. single. time.

Super Photon Racing (came out last year, maybe before) is similar by the sounds of it - you draw your route around the track (slowing down when you want to brake). Go too fast and you slip out, etc. You can compete against times, but also against times set by Real People so effectively you can race online regardless of whether anyone is playing it or not.

Really good fun.

sounds exactly like draw race as well.

Sounds very cool but also a little scary.

Think I will invest in one of those FAQ guide apps that seem to appear for the major Squenix titles.

If the camera angle is right, I'll give it a go. It's great when you pull it off. Otherwise it ain't worth the risk. I've fully upgraded the gatling gun now though, and am therefore using it to clear large crowds more often than I was. If you feather it well enough you can achieve an almost continuous rate of fire. The downside being of course that you can't see much of the playing field, but the howitzer is one tap away on the weapon select, so it works quite well.

It's actually the best gun for clearing the front of the bunker if you have a couple of survivors running in. Once they're safe and sound, out with the howitzer, then onto the Bofors to thin out the Zombie Conga line. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, move, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, move....

Love it.

For the gattling gun and the boffer I have resisted upping the splash damage on them to avoid accidental civilian casualties. The howitzer, when I can afford it, will be getting maxed out.

Does that seem sensible or am I missing a trick here?

I did the same for a while, but actually the Damage Radius doesn't seem to make it any less precise. The faster firing seems to help more though, you can squeeze out two bullets at a time and hopefully only hit the zomb.

The thing about maxing it out though is that you can actually clear a line of zombies very quickly, without needing to reload. Quicker than the Bofors sometimes, although I've yet to max that out for comparison.

Going for max radar next.

Nah, the fun of this game is finding things out for yourself.

Well I did play both the FF Tactics games on the DS. Loved them both, but I got to a point where I got out of my depth and I couldn’t progress. A lot of the upgrades, the job changing stuff is completely unintuitive to a novice, especially a novice to Final Fantasy games. With my work being what it is right now I can’t invest as much time as I used to on games, so long-winded experimentation is out.

I remember, when I got stuck on the DS FFT games I eventually looked up some help on Gamefaqs and realised that I’d taken myself down some dead ends in terms of character progression, and in hindsight, I could have built my characters differently and actually finished one of the games.

So yeah, I think this time I might get a guide upfront and see if effects my enjoyment. Hopefully not. After all, there is still the tactical side of fighting each fight a la Advance Wars, that you can’t really cheat.

Cut The Rope: Experiments is apparently out now. 69p.

Anyone wanna buy it and let us know what it's like? :)

I have to say, I love how the sequel (?) to one of the best-selling games on iOS can be announced and launched within 24 hours. This platform.

I bought CTR: Experiments this morning and played through it while a bit hungover. t's more of the same - early levels, so the difficulty is very mild, but they do bring some nice new toys to the equation. You'll like it well enough if you just want more of the same.

What's your game centre id Davros? I've just taken over SaintM at the top of my leaderboards and need something to aim for. Current highscore is 551.

How many bloody games a week do you buy Scott?

I've gone a bit daft this week... but gunship only cost 69p so that doesn't count.

To put it in perspective though, I've only bought about 6 retail releases in total all year, with 5 of them being cheapness bargains.

No need indeed, unless you want them quicker of course.

Oh Puerto Rico is out... Tempting. It's another board game release for those of you who've never heard of it. Anyone picked it up as yet?

Don't know much about the board game, any good?

Yeah, I have. Only had a go through the tutorial so far. We're gonna have a proper play tonight. It all seems very nicely done.

I've just downloaded Zombie Gunship thing... I'm assuming there's no need to buy any of the upgrades using actual cash and that playing it long enough will yield enough coins to unlock them?

No. I would even say it would remove the whole point of the game. See K's post earlier in the thread - it's partially what makes the game so addictive, saving up for the upgrades.

Did many people get FFT? I'm gonna start a thread if there are a few of us all playing it at the moment, but I dunno how much point there is!

Yeah, I indulged. I felt like James Bond as I downloaded it while in the apple store at lunchtime waiting to be served.

Had a quick play, its all how I remember, and thankfully didn’t start in a kids bedroom like the DS version! I even named my character the same as all those moons ago “Dark Star” (I think it was some sort of Radiohead inspired choice back in the day). I am actually surprised that my younger self liked this so much, its definitely not very accessible. Definitely not one I think we will see in the upper echelons of the charts alongside zombie gunship and angry birds. In fact its one of those games that actually does its best to put you off at first. I remember the rewards though of building a formidable unit, and how attached you become to the little guys. Cant wait to get stuck in on way home tonight.

And honourable mentions to Groove Coaster and also Vector Rally, which nobody's ever heard of and is something of a hidden gem.

mzl.tjczvtjm.320x480-75.jpg

It's a turn based racing game where each turn you have a choice of nine squares to move to. If you're approaching a corner you'll want to choose one nearby so that you slow down, and if you're on a straight you can safely just choose the furthest one from where you are, but your nine choices will then be even further away next time and if you're approaching a corner you might not be able to slow down in time. It's really ace, and apparently really difficult to explain! It's very simple to play though.

It seems a lot like a lower tech Pico GP but since that doesn't appear to be available anymore I'm glad to see it.

I don't think some of you are getting that it's turn based.
