What is the game where it scrolls left to right and when you touch the screen it makes a helicopter go up or down. The objective being to survive as long as you can whilst dodging blocks.

Do a search for iCopter in the app store, I have the first one that comes up and it's pretty good. Canabalt is a similar style of game as well but rather than dodging blocks you are jumping buildings.

We now know that iphone 4 hass the retina display thingy that means it has 75% of resolution of ipad on screen size of ipod touch.

Does this mean that if I load up "updated" flight control on iPad it won't look as "blocky" as all the "assets" are now at higher res (albeit not full ipad res)

This is an interesting point - it seems that all of my iOS4 updated apps that include higher res graphics wont run at all on the iPad, iTunes refuses to move them across

I tried the Lite version, but being put back at the beginning of the level after dying was a bit too harsh for a portable version. And I think it was a bit slow. And I've still got my PS2 copy, anyway.

Still tempted to buy it after all that.

There's a bunch of Gameloft games reduced down to 59p again - Rayman 2, HAWX, The Oregon Trail, Driver, The Settlers (off the top of my head).

Bought Rayman 2, HAWX and The Oregon Trail, although reading some reviews suggests that Rayman 2 suffers from poor controls (but is a full port of the game, which is amazing really). Haven't got room on my iPod to play it yet

Settlers was well worth the £2.99 I originally paid for it let alone 59p - hours of gameplay there (it's the bulk of Settlers 3 PC) and a superb interface.

Oregon Trail seems like a good punt given its retro roots.

Can anyone recommend one of the Roguelikes?

I've tried iNetHack, which is OK but really doesn't work too well on the touch interface.

I keep seeing good things about:

- Sword of Farogal

- 100 Rogues

- Cavern

- Rogue Touch

and some others which are Rogue-ish, but not really roguelikes, more like Torchlight-a-likes.

Any recommendations of either type?

Yeah, I've got them all so hopefully can help. Sword of Fargoal is probably the pick of the bunch- made with love and care, a good balance between enjoyment and challenge. Got a real charm to it as well, lovely game. It's a sort-of-rogue like though as it's not really turned based, it just feels like it is (that probably doesn't make any sense). But there are some epic moments along the way- especially when some bastard dragon thing blinds you and all hell breaks lose. Really good stuff.

I liked Cavern a lot but it's a bit of an acquired taste- the best way to get through early levels involves finding loot, hauling your ass three or four floors back to the surface, selling for gold, getting better equipment etc etc. It's got a set number of creatures in it as well, so once you've cleared a level, that's it done and dusted and you can wander through the levels unmolested. The endgame is pretty good- lots of crazy shit gets thrown at you, and making it back to the surface alive was pretty nail-biting. Plus you sometimes stumble across corpses of other adventurers who have died, and have to battle their ghosts to nick their loot. However the guy who makes it recently said he's going stick it on sale soon, after the next update, so if you are interested I'd hold off buying it until it's cheaper.

Rogue Touch is the most traditional roguelike of the bunch, and most of the times I've died in this have been due to hunger and poor time management on my part, rather some evil creature ripping out my insides. It's a bit plain and doesn't have much atmosphere, but it's worth a pop anyway- it's certainly more challenging than Fargoal and Cavern.

100 Rogues looks great and has a lot of nice little touches, but I didn't get on so well with it although I know a lot folk who like it a lot- it feels unbalanced compared to the others, and although I played it quite a lot, I realised I actually wasn't enjoy playing it. I reckon they're still a few updates away from getting the game right- I've always found that in the best roguelikes you die because you've made an error of judgement, and even though it might be unfair or shitty, you learn a little something along the way. In 100 Rogues I tend to find I die because the game has spammed a bunch of enemies at me and given me no way to survive.

All four of them are worth playing though- they've all got enough to differences to make them enjoyable.

There's a free version of Powder as well- it doesn't work too well on the iPhone though, it's free to play (although you have to pay £7 or something ridiculous to go past level 15) - it's a very rushed port though and the instructions seem to think you're playing it on a DS or a GBA.

As far as Diablo / Torchlight type games go, you could check out the lite version of Dungeon Hunter- it's basically a version of Diablo, pretty good for what it is.

Flick Football was just updated. You can now put more curve on the ball more to help get it around the wall. It's only a small amount, but it's really noticeable. Awesome game.

Yeah, really love this, best free kick game I have played. Shame it doesnt have facebook integration for high scores amongst friends. I cant get into the open feint stuff.

I was going to reply about roguelikes, but rumblecat has done a fantastic job there. I like 100 Rogues a little more and Cavern maybe a touch less, but I'm pretty much in agreement.

(I think that 100 Rogues is hugely enjoyable when it works properly, but it needs a few more updates to balance it add more variety to be properly great. That said, I've not played 1.04.)

Tiki totems premium (it and all the level packs) is free, just grabbed it from the app store. Not sure if that has always been the case, but I'm sure someone recommended it recently.

It's a block dropping physics based puzzler. Seems pretty decent from the quick shot I had.

Awesome, thanks for that. Really useful.

I'll take a look at some videos of the ones you recommend and pick one to try. I just wish the iPod Touch had enough CPU power to run something like Dwarf Fortress (and had a user interface that could cope with it).

Slide to Play seemed to recommend "Solomon's Keep" which was 99c, so I picked it up. Seems OK, but I've not played it enough to make a judgement yet.

EDIT: Had a quick 20 minute go and it's pretty damn good actually. Very much like a portable torchlight but more slow-moving. Basically you're a wizard, climbing a tower level-by-level. Left thumb to move, right thumb for directional spell attacks (all ranged attacks). You kill stuff room by room, you level up and select from 3 options for the skill, spell, or health/mana characteristic you want to enhance. You pick up money and buy stuff. You get rings/enhancements. Good graphics/sound. Feels a bit slow-moving at first, but given the amount of available screen this is a Good Thing when it gets busy. Any faster and it'd probably be a bit unmanageable. Bargain for 99c.

Geometry Wars needs an update.

The facebook connect thing is messed up, Leaderboard error message never seems to go away and the screen rotation is wrong for iPhone 4, as they've changed the position of the speaker. Now, it's under your left hand.

Annoying.

I've spent my lunchtime playing World Soccer Champs 2010. Top-down arcade footie with a lovely passing system. Took a while to get into - reading the instructions is essential - but I'm really enjoying it now I've won my first game. (2-1 against New Zealand as England.)

Mr Space is free at the moment and well worth picking up, gets really hectic when the speed increases. You can't go wrong really.

Saving Private Sheep is a similar physics game to Tiki Totems and is free at the moment. I think it's a little too well presented making it a tad slow to play as it sends you back to a fancy worldmap rather than to the next level but can't complain for nowt.
