I'm giving it a good try, because people seem to like it, but I'm really not enjoying it.

I figured I was missing something - as you say, people really dig it, but I can't enjoy it. The controls have taken all the fun out of it for me. Was hoping it'd be more like Super Stardust.

My poor old iPhone 3G feels extremely ropy when playing most 3D games (such as Space Miner). Which means I'm even more excited about iPhone 4, I'll be able to catch up on a load of stuff that the 3G just can't handle (such as Espagaluda etc).

How odd, I went through space miner on all difficulties and never needed autofire - I didn't see the benefit!

You don't need it, but it means you don't have to take your thumb of the thrust button to shoot. The shoot button works as a toggle with autofire on anyway, so there's really no reason not to use it.

Bought PES 2010.

It's PES on iPhone.

It has the best graphics of the iPhone footy games, great animation and flows like PES. The goalies are great, in terms of animation, diving around, making dramatic saves etc.

Gameplay-wise it's better than XL Football 2010, although that's a good game.

One thing that may make or break it for people is that there is currently no manual player select.

Otherwise, it's very good.

2XL is better value, but PES is the better game in turns of 'looking' realistic.

Also, loving the two 59p Flick footy games.

Both involve taking free kicks in and around the penalty area. You can add varying degrees of aftertouch in both. Pikpok's uses OF high scores, Neonplay's uses it's own. Both have Arcade and Time Attack style modes. Both award bonuses/points for accurate goals.

Neonplay's Flick Football

Pros:

Multiplier scoring system

Can gain extras (like next shot from penalty spot, extra time etc)

More realistic in terms of after touch. Ball feels weightier.

Pikpok's FlickKick Football

Pros:

Generous (FUN!) amounts of aftertouch.

Defenders move around

Bonus target takes up new position each shot.

Can't really recommend either, because both are brilliant.

I found autofire ruined it. I tried it then turned it off.

Just bought the Neonplay Flick Football game on your recommendation and can see it being a serious little timewaster - very much one more go.

Just read some of the App Store reviews of that Neonplay's Flick Football, and now I know why I don't read App Store reviews. Complaints about a lack of game modes, and that it's a short game. One person even felt 'shortchanged' that there wasn't more to it.

It's 59p

Yeah, they need to sort out the reviewing system for sure, though I'm pretty sure there's an overhaul coming as the complaints are mounting.

Earlier I was checking out the free Tate gallery app which plays like a hide and seek, real world art tagging game. You use it when you're actually in the Tate and have to scan/find artwork and the other players or something. Cue one star reviews consisting of 'rubbish you actually have to be in the Tate' OH COME ON :P

Just gave Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter a go.

Chose the first map, a random herbivorous dinosaur and the only gun I had access to - a pistol. Got dropped into what I assume is a random starting point (though I think there are a few it cycles between, as I definitely started in the same spot twice). It looks very turn-of-the-millennium-PC-game - not surprising, as it was one - so pretty good for an iPhone game.

Once I'd got comfortable with moving and aiming I shot the first dinosaur I saw, then was confused because I didn't get any points. Decided you probably need to only shoot dinosaurs that you've chosen to hunt to get points, as is indeed the case. (I read the help a little later.)

Anyway, I went in a few times, used the radar to track down dinosaurs and then shot them before they spotted me and ran away. Which isn't as easy as it sounds, especially with the pistol. (Not because of the controls though - they're fantastic.)

Enjoyable stuff, but I then decided to hunt the dangerous, carnivorous allosaurus. Dear me, there's few things as exciting as making the dinosaur's call, hearing an answering call off through the trees and then trying to hit the dinosaur before it spots you, leaps and kills you. I died a lot, but it was fantastically atmospheric and exciting. And when I finally dropped an allosaurus with the last bullet in my gun as he ran towards to me, well, that moment was worth three quid, right there.

Yeah I like Carnivores. It's very PC game but my 30 minute tube journey over the weekend was very immersive with headphones on. The dinosaurs are ace.

I like the one star review of it on the app store "1 star out of 5. This game isn't for iPhone" Uhm, yes it is.

The option to rate on deleting items is removed in OS4 - you have to write a review in the App store.

Aye that's good, but that's only fixing one part of the problem. They need a better way of weighting the average ratings and scores etc. There are some truly wonderous apps that show up as average 1 or 2 stars even though most of the reviews are five stars and glowing. It's the one star reviews with text like 'bad' or for a Driving route planner 'rubbish you need a car. i dont have car. one star' that are problematic.

How mindblowing is Plant vs Zombies? Heard so many good things that I had to give it a whirl by far the best thing I've played on a phone.

Also noticed a few folks in the thread have lost saves, games etc whenever something goes wrong with the phone. If you open the iPhone section in iTunes when it's connected to your PC there's a backup option that's very easy to use and lets you save all files associated with programs. I run it about once a week.
