Sorry if this has been covered but I've just bought a SF4 Arcade Stick and I've heard about the problems with the washer damaging the PCB, is there anything I can do to prevent problems occurring with the stick?

When making a stick is it worth putting eight buttons on it? What other games re they used for. Specificallly Shmups and MvsC2.

The reason a lot of commercial sticks are made with 8 buttons on the face is to satisfy both japanese and US layouts. The japanese use a curved layout and the US use a straight layout. No games (to my knowledge I also asked this on SRK as well) use all 8 buttons for game play however some may use them in menus for galleries etc. I oppted for the Japanese layout on the face and added 2 to the side of the stick as pinball style flipper buttons. However Zen pinball on the PSN won't allow me to change my buttons appropriatly so far they remain unused!

Or you know, putting enough buttons on there to account for what is on an original pad :o Layouts have bugger all to do with it, it's just two buttons at the end extending the existing layout. Having 8 buttons doesn't suddenly grant you the power to satisfy two styles - they are laid out the same if you use 6 or 8. Death Smiles was built for 4 buttons, but it still has a 8 button stick (I actually play it using the bottom 4 buttons on my Mad Catz stick, but that means I don't bomb accidently :()

Granted for non-fighters your mileage may vary, but theres a reason I play MVS on my cab with a 16button panel with the 8th hole plugged off, rather then use the top three and the first on the bottom row. (I also have the benefit of being able to do capcom layout and mvs layout without changing wires between games ;) )

Hey, I was just repeating the feedback I got from the same question on SRK! The layout thing is totally spot on for sticks like the TE and SE. fair enough if you want to have every button on the pad mapped then yes go for eight personally I find eight face buttons clumsy and unessecary on a home made stick!

The clone stick is inherently flawed to the point where it can damage itself. But you can swap in a proper sanwa for £20 with no effort other then unscrewing the base plate, removing a connector, unscrewing the old stick and reversing the procedure. 2minute job. Buttons are fine if you don't want to spend any extra on those. You don't even need to change the stick right away, you should get hours out of it before needing to replace it

Thanks man, that is kinda the way I feel aswell. 2 lines of 3 looks the best imho. I would rather change my play style a little, than have a mental stick with buttons everywhere. There are always (hopefully) going to be button combos for the buttons missing.

How is 8 buttons " a mental stick with buttons everywhere". It's not a mame cab with 10 buttons a side, a trackball, a spinner and 2 extra players you won't use. It's just two extra buttons extending the existing layout. If it bothers you that much to have 2 extra buttons, you can plug them off. That way, you get the option. Damm sight easier to block them off then try drilling them in later! *hides his 2L16B*

Hassle? It really isn't. It's a really easy job.

OK hassle wasn't quite the right word.

I have no problem opening the thing up and doing the job, just it's another £20 and yet another thing to try and hunt down & order

The really frustrating thing is I'm sat here looking at 4 perfectly good sticks; PS1, Saturn, DC & Xbox 1 none of which I can use :(

Well it was more in reference to some of the sticks I have seen on SRK with 12 buttons laid out ergonomically. But feel free fly off the proverbial. Plugging them off isn't a bad idea. But I don't think ultimately I am that bothered about them. I rest my hand on the right side so I would either have to rest them on the buttons or put a large enough gap in to rest my hand. Tbh drilling some holes afterwards is no problem. My old man's got a Dremmel and that thing eats wood for breakfast. I'll have to see.

There have been a lot of instances of the buttons breaking or having limited response also.

Mine had two 'slightly dodgy' buttons to start with, but these soon became 'if you get two presses out of ten you're doing well' so you may well have to replace them before long - about £20 to buy better ones - but they are ~really~ simple to swap...

Took about 15 mins for me to swap out all eight.

Ironically the stick has been fine on mine (35+ hours of play later), but I think I'll thinking I'll replace it anyway next month - just to be on the safe side...

So you're probably best of looking at the Fightstick as a nice box and wiring kit for a proper joystick - which means it's only £40 cheaper than the TE..

The warranty is fairly worthless as Madcatz support over here tends to ignore emails etc until you stop trying..
