Sorry if I'm retreading old ground, but regarding the Madcatz standard stick... the problems that it's reported having by some, is it terminal? I mean, if it knacks like I've seen is it just all simply replaceable with other parts or are you stuffed once (if) it happens? There's some stuff I just can't do reliably on the pad at all (eg. Cammy's old tiger knee motion insta-cannon strike, I'm hitting it maybe 1 in 30 tries), so I'm tempted to get a stick again to see if I have more success.

Don't quote me on this, since I'm pretty much pulling this from memory, but I think the common fault with the Madcatz SE stick was a washer issue - it was either installed the correct way or the wrong way, so literally 50% of the initial production run would develop abnormal wear and tear after just a few hours. Supposedly, the new batch which are starting to surface don't have this problem, since the friendly chinese factory workers have finally been told how important it is to make sure the washer goes on a certain way. There's a thread in the Tech board on SRK that goes into more detail.

As for whether the sticks are a complete write-off should they break - don't believe this is the case, since it was specifically the stick mechanism that was failing. All the wiring and PCB stuff is sound. One of the big plus-points to the Madcatz SF4 sticks is that their parts are modelled specifically on Sanwa pieces - replacing them is a relatively simple endeavour.

Well I'm modding the Madcatz SE fightstick rather than an EX2. :D I know it won't be something that can be done blind-folded, but I think's it simpler in general than the Hori. Assuming I get Sanwa snaps and a JLF, I shouldn't need to do any soldering/filing.

But yep - aligning the art and making that a neat job is the main worry. Like you said, I'll be taking it to a printing shop and asking them to make an adhesive laminate of it. The guide on the srk forums makes it look sort of easy, but also sort of easy to fuck up.. :)

And I took Gus's advice and had a play around with the design last night in an effort to make it a little bit more interesting. Found a nice Miyazaki background and blacked out 50% of it, then laid the three Kaduma over the top and outlined them.

I think it turned out pretty nice. :(

Cool, Ghibli themed sticks! I want a Totoro fightstick now :)

My SE Fightstick, having already been "fixed" once, is now squeaking like a mamahueva when I move the joystick into the corners.

It's a shame because it felt pretty good for a while but I think the abuse necessary for Guile's Hard Challange nummer 5 was too much for its brittle iron-deficient bones.

I don't fancy sending it off again as it took the best part of a month to sort it all out last time, so I am going to try my hand at sticking some sanwa/seimitsu kit in there.

Given that I am an absolute leper at these types of things what are the chances that I completely destroy the stick beyond repair? Am I right in thinking that the actual electronic circuit board bit is the only thing that I couldn't get a replacement for without the aid of our hilariously incompetent friends at Madcatz?

Pretty much. You won't be going anywhere near that stuff though.

Check out that video Snowbind posted earlier in the topic, post #673, to see how (relatively) simple the whole task is. Really, the main thing you need to be careful of is just being overzealous with getting screws / pulling wires out, etc.

This is worth mentioning though: there's a shortage of JLFs currently (the sanwa sticks). The only model I can find is the JLF-TP-8Y right now (well, last night) from gremlinsolutions. This is the correct stick, but it doesn't come with a mounting plate. This isn't ideal, since it means using the stock mounting plate and I'm reading lots and lots of stories saying how difficult they are to remove. It seems the screws are weirdly soft and may also actually be GLUED in.

The stick models that do come with the maounting plate are the JLF-TP-8YT and the JLF-TP-8T (I'm pretty sure - this is from memory though). If you're concerned about this plate thing (and people on SRK forums are saying you should be), it's recommended to wait for the other models to come in.

All that said, I ordereed one of the 8Y sticks last night so I'll feedback what trouble, if any, I have with that mounting plate malarkey. *gulp*

If you're concerned about this plate thing

I am the anti-midas of electronic fixery, removal of plugs from wall sockets has caused me consternation in the past so this kind of thing is well into the realms of apocolypse-grade concern.

Do the bods at Gremlin know when they will be getting more stock in? Must be like fucking Christmas for them at the moment.

No idea pal, sorry. They seem to be getting regular orders of Sanwa parts in, but I'm assuming the popular parts such as this stick w/ plate fly off the e-shelves pretty quickly. Lizardlick's another good site, but they've flat out closed up shop until the second week in april when they'll start taking orders again. Akihabara.jp (sp) is the other site, but again - not taking any orders currently as far as I know.

Crazy times.

I've got a TE stick for the 360 which meant it was horrible having to go back to the shitty Hori Fighting Stick 3 I have on PS3, so I snapped up a SE stick when I saw them briefly appear on Game's site on monday. I already had some Sanwa parts as I intended to try and build my own stick months ago but never got around to it, so I pretty much took the SE out of the box and modded it.

Red buttons and stick are Sanwa, white buttons are the stock ones. I may replace them with Sanwa at some point but I only really use those buttons on the menus so I'll see how it goes.

It feels lovely. The angle at the bottom makes it even more comfortable to use than the TE.

I just tore the old art off. i initially wanted to try and keep it in good condition incase I ever wanted to put it back but I realised after about 5 seconds that that was gonna be impossible. It's stuck down too well.

I dunno if they glue the top plate on now as well as screw it but once I'd taken the screws out of the top I still couldn't get the plate off so I couldn't just use it as a template.

I cut a practice template out of another sheet of paper to make sure it would fit properly and just used that as a guide while cutting the art out, making little adjustments where the original cut-out was too big/small. Trying to get the control panel hole the right size was the scariest bit. it's not perfect but it's not too bad. I cut the holes for the buttons and stick out once the art was stuck down, using the metal holes as a guide to drag my scalpel around.

Hope the art stays down. It's quite thick as it's a laminated printout with a shitload of double sided tape on the back, so I'm hopint it doesn't lift up at the bottom because of the angled surface.

Interesting FGM. I hadn't even considered regular laminate + double-sided tape. And yeah, to remove the top plate you pretty much need to gut the housings. I've got this guide bookmarked and between and your method I'm hoping I'll be able to wing my own way through the process. :)

Yeah, I checked out that guide, which is why I thought it would come out easily. It seemed to be stuck at the top, above the buttons, and along the bottom. Maybe I was just missing something.

I used the Sellotape double sided tape, it's really thin after you take the backing off and seems quite sticky but carpet tape may be better, and laid strips all the way across the back of the pic before I started cutting so it would be right at the edges after the cut. I just made sure each strip of tape was flush against the last so there were none overlapping or any real gaps.

Edit:

Oh, my stick was a bit different to the ones in those guides, maybe an updated version, cos there was only one pcb in there, the one at the top over the Home and Turbo box.

I cut it from this one.

Though I got a higher res version from www.kawaiidream.net. You have to sign up but they have a lot of good stuff on there. Some of it has a watermark but it's not too bad.

Cheers!

My TE stick died on me again tonight. The reconnect controller message popped up halfway through a league game with Patronsaint :). It was fully flush with the dongle when I checked it, plenty of slack on the cable. Reconnected and it was OK again... argh :/
