New Aliens Vs Predator game!

God, what a shambles the demo is. "focus", it helpfully labels the left bumper neglecting to explain what that means, or why pressing it does nothing. I figured out that you could hold the "transition" button and jump to do a Dead Space jump, but only on random surfaces, and then you're stuck to oddly shaped Walls and just flap around a bit, lost and confused in the dark.

Focus mode allows you to engage a target with melee (a focus pounce) from a certain distance as an Alien and Predator. In addition to that, as a Predator, it has the benefit of highlighting your weapon pick-ups on the environment and allows you to focus jump in order to traverse the environment.

You can leap onto any surface providing you are within range as an Alien with nothing more than a press of the jump button (you don't need to hold focus). Focus jumping as a Pred is also contingent on range and you do need to hold focus.

The transition trigger is there to provide control over when and where you choose to scale a wall. You can also enable auto-transition so that you will scale walls at all times. You do not have to hold it down once on a surface other than the ground as in other AvP games and tapping the trigger will immediately disengage you from a wall or ceiling so that you land on the ground.

If you wish to focus pounce on someone, I believe the range factor for the Alien is 20m. With a Pred, its 8m unless you have the corresponding vision mode enabled for the species you're attacking - in that case it extends to 20m. Simply hold down focus and hit your melee button when you see that the enemy has a targeting reticle around them. You can do this from ceilings and walls as an Alien.

Edit: Err, yeah, somewhat beaten by Linkster but I'm hope you can find something useful in my post.

As linkster said; aware of the lack of tutorial.

Recommend the combat techniques video:

And this chap as well:

A fan on youtube named 'tidomann' has been putting together some excellent videos detailing the gameplay in various ways.

He's a pretty damn good player who really seems to have embraced the melee and species strengths.

Plus some little metagame videos.

I would recommend switching auto-transition on, and forgetting about the transition button altogether (unless you want to drop from a ceiling you can't jump from). Focus is pretty much 'lock on' with the alien, but they probably didn't want to call it that because it upsets PC gamers. ^_^

...you do need to hold focus.

I don't think this bit is true. If you tap, you remain 'focused' for about 2-3 seconds. I probably end up holding it down though, just cos. :o

Yes, that sounds like what I wanted to do. I just ended up stuck to the ceiling above a marine, unable to do anything exciting at all, even though it seemed like there should be some way to easily skewer his brains.

You had plenty of options: attack with your tail from the ceiling (heavy attack LB), focus attack by holding LT and then pressing either RB or A, drop down behind him and eat his brains with X, or simply attack him with standard attacks. It takes some getting used to, but once you get used to the controls and your head around the fact that this is unlike most other multiplayer FPS games (lose the MW2 mindset asap) it becomes really good. I love it tbh.

Does anyone know if trophy kills can be countered? By trophy kills I mean insta-kills that occur from the front, usually enabled after you have landed a clean heavy attack on an enemy.

A few times now, I have engaged a trophy kill as a Pred (complete with the animation of me grabbing the Alien) but it gets aborted with the Alien pushing away. I've even been on the receiving end and managed to escape myself a few times. I have yet to discover what it is that is doing this as I'm usually just mashing buttons when it happens. I also have an idea that a successful trophy kill might be reliant upon how much health the enemy has but again, I'm unsure (as in not beating them up enough means a successful trophy kill is not possible).

Linkster or daPing - can you shed any light?

Well Fazz quoted some source on previous page as saying
The maps will be released one at a time for download on a weekly basis after the game launches. After this time they will be available to download via Xbox Live and PlayStation Network.

The drip feeding isn't actually true either, I suspect those ads went to print before that was corrected - special editions will get the four extra maps day 1

So if they are available for the Special Editions on Day 1 to download will they be available on XBL/PSN on Day 1, or will that be a month or so down the line?

Also, any idea if they will be released as one pack or individually?

Cheers, Linkster.

Special editions can download them from PSN/XBL/Steam day one, some time later (not sure if this is announced and being careful not to tread on toes!) as that statement you quoted - even though it's ambiguously worded, like where else would SE customers get them from? - they can be bought by others. If they are bored with what they have.

yeah, it's health based hence unlikely to happen with a marine but since the Predator at full health can withstand a single heavy attack, which because he flinches would than give the attacker the option of a trophy kill, he actually still has enough health to surivive the attack so will push off the trophy attempt

No there's a decent mix, the 18 player maps are as you'd expect well able to support that many players and are outdoors with quite a variety in terms of the locales (jungle, caves, big compound). Was a bit worried when we put out Refinery it wasn't that well suited to Predator, he has much more fun outside ^_^

There's also a smaller map which has reconfiguring corridors, which is about the only nod to 'those' movies you'll find in this game :o

Marvelous stuff!!

my last question of the day, do the marines get the sentry guns in MP?

Ahh, gotcha.

So the threshold between a aborted trophy kill and a successful trophy kill is based upon the defender's remaining health being over or under the damage value of a trophy kill. Over, they survive. Under, they die horribly. I won't press you for a numerical value on that because that just spoils the surprise!

"oh shit, he didn't die....KEEP FIGHTING!"

Last I heard, no they don't.

Says you Mr Xeno ^_^

Seriously I had no idea you could attack from the ceiling, even less that the alien could strike with its tail from up there. Great stuff. Also disappointing that there's so much not explained controls-wise, the stuff keeps coming out of the god-damn walls :o

Has anyone found the flamethrower to be all that useful in this? It seems to do so little damage over time that a Pred or an Alien can easily survive rushing and killing you despite a face full of flame. It's so ineffective that it just seems like a pointless weapon existing purely as fan service.

Beef that sucker up Rebellion.

I guess not. Before this I thought a Pred Hunt game might be too easy for the marines...but apparently not! I now realise the only time I get the upper hand with a pred is when he's distracted by a xeno. Marines FTL. ^_^

Nah man, got to work as a team!

Given the choice I always go marine
