New Aliens Vs Predator game!

Uhm slow insta-kill animations are for balance, man. You know, risk/reward kinda thing? If you had a quick insta-kill button the matches would get really boring really fast, there has to be some risk involved for the sake of balance. Nothing to do with mouse vs joypad.

Well I'm sure it is but it's the completely wrong way of going about it. Losing control of your character for such a long period of time is frustrating for both of the players and unnecessary no matter what - there are always other things you can do. (Plus you can end up in a congaline situation)

Example:

What I would do is weaken the Alien's frontal attacks and give them a quick (but none instakill) pounce attack from behind which deals say 70% damage and gives the Marine/Predator a very small chance of living depending whether they can block and parry the Alien's next attack almost perfectly. This also gives the Alien a chance of scampering if another enemy that they didn't notice is near by.

Predator is all about cloaking and waiting for prey to come along and I agree that he should have an instant kill but the animation should be at the most half the length. To balance it there should be a brief period of time where he has to uncloak and can't attack; giving the player a slim chance to survive if he or a comrade notices and the Predator a chance to escape if needs be.

I guess nothing can prepare you for the real thing

One day there will be people working on online games who are fully prepared for the deluge of players, the endless complexities of delivery platforms and the waves of hate and bile generated in forums etc. etc.

I reckon that will happen after we all develop psychic powers and the middle east is a peaceful place which is great for holidays... :quote:

Or Sony and MS make it possible to actually host an online beta :quote:

alien already can do that - predator too. called focus leap - use focus mode, target, light attack, knocks target over but doesn't kill. tis in the video!

Finally got a game on PS3. I played the Alien and lost! Couldn't get another game.

ass, sorry dude - tending to find once you've established a group it generally stays. FWIW some of the PC and PS3 issues seem related and seem to have made a breakthrough there so hopefully can resolve the PS3 sooner than later

Linkster, just so's you know some folks I'm talking to in WoW would like the option to push to talk/mute people on the pc :quote:

The front end of this feels awfully cheap and nasty like something from a budget game, not that it matters in the greater scheme of things.

Which version? The 360 one is pretty nice with the spinning facehugger and that.

I think that's entirely down to it being a demo and being HUGELY cut down (one game type, no servers - just random matchmaking etc.).

One thing I really like is if you enable gamepads, the interface reacts to it and shows gamepad buttons etc. More PC games need to do this - instead of the fucking nonsense in games like Saints Row 2 which blindly tutorial you though the standard keys even if you have a pad or have remapped them!!!

New patch applied - it now seems to matchmake better (it seems to ever-reduce the number of people required??) - so you get

0 player - 8 more reqd

1 player - 7 more reqd

2 player - 6 more reqd

3 player - 5 more reqd

3 player - 4 more reqd

3 player - 3 more reqd

3 player - 2 more reqd

3 player - 1 more reqd

and so until the lobby pops (in that case with 3 people - although sometimes more will appear before the game starts).

Entering three games kicked me back out again before the game loaded - sadly - but I'm putting that down to the game choosing an unsuitable host - it's certainly WAY better at getting into the lobby at least.

Are there any clues as to what's required to host a game well - does the game use UPNP to map ports?? are there specific ports people should forward in order to host?? Are people on lower-spec hardware going to find it hard to host???

360, guess it's my personal preference.

As for the demo itself it's not really ringing my bell, but I was more interested in the SP aspect of this game anyway.

Played this a fair bit tonight and have had a good chunk of equal time with both the alien and the marine. I think that due to things I've learnt and things I've read here I'm having a fair bit of success with both of them. Short controlled bursts is the key with the marine (of course!), but that's easier said than done when an alien is powering towards you. The block, counter, riddle them with bullets move is also working out quite nicely for me. With the Alien, its just about getting used to doing things at speed. I can see the appeal of waiting in the dark, but I prefer skittering across ceilings, taking someone out and then running off again.

Still not entirely sure how to use the predator properly, but I've had fewer chances with him. Either way, the balance for the marine and the alien is starting to become pretty apparent now. I can see how difficult it must have been, but it's paid off. It's great!

I'm skint these days, but I'm going to have to buy this on launch, aren't I? Damnit.

in a sense yes, it'll be someone who is still using the old executable. with Steam going down soon that'll be over with shortly

I make 6pm PST = 2am GMT - 8 hours behind??

Just checked this and yes - it's 2am for Steam shutdown

cool, enjoy some regular games then!
