New Aliens Vs Predator game!

Regarding the melee system, did you try the game on hard? Sounds like you didn't try the multiplayer so hard is the next best thing - there's no melee prompts so you have to read the animations. Makes it quite a bit different.

Boss battle wise, we were just too ambitious in the amount of things we wanted to get into the game (it was 4 games in one box afterall). We didn't have the resources to focus on it all, so some bits slipped. I stand by the melee system though - a few bits might not quite work with it but overall it's really impressive and the guys that worked on it did a bloody amazing job. I also stand by the decision to add the melee system - the alternative for a game where the main enemy is melee based is QTEs and in my book that simply wasn't an option.

@ McSpeed - I'm not on the team that made Blur so don't know what they're planning next, head is well and truly down on the project I'm on.

I was playing it through on hard. The problem was just the design of the master predator fight in general, I can appreciate the melee system but it just required far too much luck in the rock-paper-scissors melee system for an extended period of time, due to how slowly his health went down and how quickly he could reduce your health.

Is anyone still playing this online? Might get the 360 version now that its cheap but it would only be for the multiplayer.

A few are, but the online just isn't worth it. Games last like 5-6 minutes but every single game I played had issues filling up, and when they did start if the host wasn't in first place (which was often) they'd rage-quit and send everyone back to the multiplayer screen (not even the lobby). Games without a persistent lobby system are so dated it's unbelievable, the multiplayer system was utterly flawed and extremely basic.

If not host migration, then the least it needed was to be able to add players to a game that was in progress, and set up a lobby for each game so that if the host left everyone else was requeued for another round rather than split up all over again and put back to the title screen. That shit just doesn't work in 2010.

thanks sarge, interesting news, but as previously stated I want touch the dlc until they fix match making. I dont suppose there is word of another patch?

Just checked the official forum and there doesn't appear to any info on a new patch. (there was a 360/PS3 patch released mid April and a PC patch released in June. The community manager has been pretty vocal about his requests for a patch/updates, but according to him, there doesn't seem to any indication that a patch is coming any time soon.)

Sega have just announced via their forum that they will no longer be supporting the console versions with patches.

I've just received a mail this AM regarding patches for the console versions of AVP and I regret to inform everyone that these have sadly been scrapped.

I had previously made a claim that these were coming and at the time, this was very much on the table. For the console community, I apologize, as I know there are many features and updates that you'd like to see. I'll keep fighting internally for this to happen, but until I hear otherwise, there will not be a console patch for either Xbox or PS3.

http://forums.sega.com/showthread.php?t=334286

I haven't read the entire thread, but it looks like the PC version will be unaffected and will, for the time being, still be supported with patches. (apologies if that isn't the case, as I said, I haven't had a chance to read through the entire thread on the Sega forum)

Thanks Sarge, shame, real shame. I am keeping it for survivor with friends, but that alone. If match making had worked this could have been amazing, and I would have happily snapped up the map packs. such a missed opportunity, multi player is truly unique.

Wow, well thats a kick in the teeth. Especially considering the PC version has apparently had all the issues plaguing the game fully patched out of it, the console version is left languishing, a week after they release DLC and expect people to lap it up? Real cheap, Sega. Thats Activision cheap.

Ended up being quite late to the party with this one, but having just picked up a copy, I can honestly say that save for one section (the Alien escaping the sewer), I enjoyed every second of it.

It's very, very rare these days that I'll settle so completely into a game that I'll clear it in three sessions, but I just clicked with this. It's not that it's OMG AMAZING, and in fact from a production stand point it's rather average, but the pacing, design, difficulty, game mechanics and pretty much everything which is key to providing an enjoyable gaming experience is totally nailed.

The three campaigns all offer a distinctive take on the levels. The Marine campaign is probably the most familiar and fleshed out of the three, offering a traditional corridor shooter with some well timed scares and battles. The Predator levels felt almost like a first person beat 'em up at times, but the weapons are totally authentic, and there was a nice variety of ranged and close quarters combat.

The Alien levels really threw me at first. The sewer level was terribly disorientating and I couldn't find the exit for love nor money. After that though, it becomes this fast, visceral stealth/hunt type affair. It actually reminded me of the more stealthy moments of Arkham Asylum, in that you could hide in the shadows or under ceilings, and then pounce to take out the enemy.

Although there was a distinct lack of any major set pieces, and as I say, the production values were clearly strained, it really got the fundamentals right so fingers are crossed that a bigger budget sequel is in the works.

I only got this the other day too, due to wanting to try out a new graphics card and this seemed like a good, cheap benchmarker ( and I've always like the AVP games). Not too far into it but have enjoyed it so far, although the Marine bit in the club came <- this -> close to making me flip out ala Battling Seizure Robots.

Started playing this this week. It's pretty decent, IMO. Just playing through the marine campaign at the moment, but they've pretty much nailed the Aliens feel, which is good. Not too sure about the inability to crouch though or the android infantry, but the aliens themselves are superbly done, coming at you in droves in certain places, that squeal echoing out, that sound of the assault rifle... It's corridor based and incredibly linear, but an alien game in an open environment just wouldn't be in keeping with the theme of the whole thing. Surprisingly decent out of 10 so far.

Exactly the same for me. I started it on friday, and have played abit of the marine campaign so far and have really enjoyed it.

Finished the marines section last night. Thoroughly enjoyable. Still don't understand the lack of crouch though seeing as the right click-stick does nothing. A strange omission.

Anyway, enjoyed the last section, just me, a turret, a smart gun and hordes of xenomorphs on a bridge. Good, panic inducing fun. Also liked that I could just run up to

Android Bishop at the end and do him in with a few shotgun blasts and then blow his head off. Nice.

Started the Predator campaign last night. Seems ok so far. Gory kills make me laugh. Seing someone's shocked face and spinal cord flailing around is quite amusing.

Finished the Marine campaign just now. A very flimsy experience but enjoyable none the less. It's a shame that it's not anywhere as scary as the original though. So now off to finish the Predator and Alien campaigns!

What's up with the stats? First it says I killed about 4500 enemies (I highly doubt that but okay) and now it says I killed 3600 enemies. My deaths have also gone from 400 (err?) to -150?!

Oh and why did the temple collapse all of a sudden? By killing Android Bishop you somehow magically destroy the temple?

I guess he rigged some explosives to go off in the case of him being destroyed or something.

If that stuff annoyed you, I heartily advise not playing the Alien or Predator campaigns. There are further... issues.

The predator campaign was fine once you got used to the melee combat, it was pretty much activate god mode tho once you used the 'over here' thing. I guess all the marines are retarded. Still, i enjoyed it. The alien had its moments too, again the stealth is very simplified thanks to the enemy AI being pants on head retarded, but you still felt pretty badass when youd take out an entire room of marines without being spotted

I gave up on the Predator campaign. Not for it not being decent enough, more for the fact that I didn't want to be a predator. The interesting thing with the two Predator films is that we don't really get much story behind the predator other than when it gets hot it comes to hunt, and that's all you need. Playing as one turns it into a bumbling berk when I get my hands on the controls, firing off lasers here and meleeing mid air there. It robs the character of all the mystique that surrounds them. It's like the disparity between Solid Snake in the cut scenes in the MGS games and the Solid Snake in my control once the game proper starts. It's just a huge dichotomy between the one and the other which is quite jarring. The less said about playing as a brainless warrior alien, the better.

They should have sunk all their time into making a really good and long campaign where you find yourself as a marine in the midst of an all out war between the predators and aliens. Playing as a marine, panicking at every twang of your motion tracker, firing blindly in panic captures the fear of the films. The game would have been much stronger if it had just concentrated on the one faction and had all the other shit kicking off around you. Much better.

I fully endorse this post. It's like they put three distinctly below average games on one disc and released it as a full game. I suppose, in marketing terms, it was a bit like a multipack of crisps but, like the crisps, you're left with at least three bags you don't like. The Marine campaign is like salt and vinegar, the Alien campaign are cheese n onion and the Predator campaign is roast chicken (roast chicken always end up going in the bin).

I adore the franchise and I felt it needed a truly proper FPS set in the Alien universe (i.e. no Predators at all) where you're a small squad of marines and you need to survive against the odds.

What the World really needs is a game called Starship Troopers.

I thought EDF 2017 scratched that itch nicely.

Have you actually seen the film Starship Troopers? EDF isn't really what I had in mind. The Ant Lions sections in Half Life 2 are a better comparison but it'd be great if someone took the over the top stupidity of EDF and put that feel into a FPS.

Hopefully Gearbox's Colonial Marines will fulfil that exact desire.

I thought EDF captured the swarms of enemies and chaos of battle that Starship Troopers had. But you're right, the game doesn't feature Michael Ironside and isn't directed by Paul Verhovenvenven. I apologise for my erroneous comparison and hope we can put this sorry episode behind us.

I know the marauder game was shit n all, but I saw a video of an early mission (the fort from the first film) where the engine just threw hordes of bugs at you.

Given how much more powerful modern systems are, and that the bugs are still pretty geometrically basic constructs, I imagine a new ST game could really match or surpass the film (surpass in terms of tone and acting, certainly). The IP has legs, even if the next two films were dogshite.
