New Aliens Vs Predator game!

Moving on is certainly true in my case. I think I traded the game way back in February.

Same here, I played the game for over a month and no patch was released by then so I sold the game. It's a shame but I was fed up with having to wait 10 minutes for it to connect up to a game

  • 1 month later...

Got this from Lovefilm the other day, completed Marine and Predator campaigns on Hard, played a few MP matches, about to do the Alien campaign.

Impressions so far:

-The boss battles are really, really shit

-The AI is really, really shit

-Predator campaign is boring for 3 missions then it becomes a fucking joke with the spear until you hit THAT end boss

-Online MP is shit, no host migration or join in progress is inexcusable in a game released in 2010

-Marine campaign is ok but far too short and again the bosses are shit

Overall, I'm glad I didn't pay for this game.

Despite the very mediocre singleplayer mode, I still have excellent memories of playing intense online multiplayer games with 10+ forumites against strangers. Too bad it only lasted for a week or so until the matchmaking became unbearably bad.

Yep, the mechanics of the game were excellent but I think it died a death due to how bad the matchmaking was.

Yeah we really tried our best to overlook the terrible matchmaking, but after awhile the constant going back forth in and out of a lobby because we kept losing party members really started to grate. And of course the terrible menu music which became headache-inducing if forced to listen to it for over half an hour because matchmaking kept failing. A real shame because when it worked it was brilliant fun with forumites and it was refreshingly different from every other multiplayer FPS game out there.

If you're just a bit into racing I'd advise you to get Blur though :) There's a strong rllmuk community there now, with quite a few people from the AvP days.

Major difference: it only takes a minute (at most, in total!) to get into a game after the previous one is finished :omg:

I'm finding this strangely ironic given that I left Rebellion and joined Bizarre. Are you all just following me around?

Right, well this is now going back to Lovefilm without completion, because it's shit. The alien final boss is a fucking joke, the predators are dull to fight but the master predator is even worse.

Whoever decided in 2010 that an FPS game needed a shitty melee system and some fucking rubbish boss fight with a boss with a health bar needs to be taken out back and shot. Oh, and before someone tells me that I just don't understand the melee system, I do, it's just fucking boring. 3 buttons in a rock paper scissors setup doesn't make for a fun melee system.

Amen to that.

The melee system in AvP was fucking awesome and one of the most memorable systems from any game this year, still is. Sure it was rock, paper, scissors but it was executed brilliantly and in multiplayer especially it came into its own. Examples like being in a 5 man skirmish and coming up top as you read the situation correctly and blocked/countered as needed and took on everyone, it's a rush and added in with a lot of tension is a very unique experience. Then when you bring things like bluffing and cancelling into play, like for example pretending to do a heavy but then cancelling into a light you could come up with other tactics to bluff players and kill them.

Unfortunately Rebellion fucked it all up with their matchmaking system and the game died a death just like another favourite of mine, Bound In Blood. Goddamnit. I still do enjoy playing survivor mode though, that's loads of fun.

Regarding the melee system, did you try the game on hard? Sounds like you didn't try the multiplayer so hard is the next best thing - there's no melee prompts so you have to read the animations. Makes it quite a bit different.

Boss battle wise, we were just too ambitious in the amount of things we wanted to get into the game (it was 4 games in one box afterall). We didn't have the resources to focus on it all, so some bits slipped. I stand by the melee system though - a few bits might not quite work with it but overall it's really impressive and the guys that worked on it did a bloody amazing job. I also stand by the decision to add the melee system - the alternative for a game where the main enemy is melee based is QTEs and in my book that simply wasn't an option.

@ McSpeed - I'm not on the team that made Blur so don't know what they're planning next, head is well and truly down on the project I'm on.

Well in hindsight now, i can admit i was swept up in the hype and fact that i just wanted an amazing Aliens/Predator game, but i still do think its a flawed, but fun game. I really enjoyed it. It was far from perfect, but fun while it lasted. I just wish there had been more moments like the club scene in the opening level of the marine campaign, that was just fantastic

I started playing this last night, and turned it off after 20 minutes.

I selected Marines, but the idle "thud thud thud" sound the motion tracker made was too annoying. I wear 5.1 headphones and the loud pounding in my ear was unbearable. It might be fine on a TV, but with my headphones it is awful. The sound when an enemy is nearby is atmospheric. The sound when no enemy is around is painfully annoying.

Whoever decided that there shouldn't be an option to turn that sound off if a fucking idiot.

If you were actually there on that planet, and you knew there might be aliens about.......would you turn the motion tracker off?

I'd turn off the pointless thumping/popping sound it makes when there is no motion. The "ping ping" when there is motion is cool.
