New Aliens Vs Predator game!

Just playing through the singleplayer today and, while tense enough in places, it's pretty fucking ropey in others. My first encounter with the predator ended in seconds as I blasted him in the face with the pulse rifle, only to see him slip off the ledge without even the merest hint of a fall animation, just stood bolt upright the whole time. Oh, and sometimes the aliens look like they're bloody stop motion animated, jerking around all over the shop.

The lighting needs more strobing action, Dead Space style, too.

I tried the multiplayer but the game I was in only had two people playing and it took aaaaaaaaaaaages to begin. Sod that.

I'm awaiting a matchmaking patch for the 360 first as well. When it's there and there's still a solid rllmuk community playing it, I'll go for the DLC.

Same here. However I traded mine with a view to pick it up cheap if people start playing again, however with the current release schedule I can't see that happening anytime soon. Shame really as whilst the game wasn't perfect the multi player was good laugh when it worked and large enough to cope with the numbers wanting to play.

It's 'only' 20 though.

It's not exactly a drastic cull (they've got loads of staff at Oxford), probably more of a streamlining or letting some go that they may have wanted to for a while (but were waiting to get the game finished first).

For Derby, the writing's been on the wall for a long time now, unfortunately.

I think I enjoyed the Predator campaign the most, though both it and the Xeno missions felt a bit like playing a Left 4 Dead versus match against dim AI.

I gave the multiplayer a few goes, but on first attempt there were only a couple of people in the game, the second time it hung for ages and never found anything, and then the final time it seemed to reset my 360. A shame because I think I might enjoyed the game more against real people.

The next patch will fix that, I've been on holiday this week so not up to speed with exactly what stage its at but won't be long.

Can we have a 'remove smartgun from pred hunt' option? :P

The alien tail kills are starting to wind folk up as well, although personally I feel weak as fuck as an alien, so perhaps they need it.

Pred hunt needs bigger maps man... The biggest map is what, ruins? Still pretty small...

Just a few days after AvP went on sale and as soon as they caught their first glimpse of the sales figures Sega confirmed that Colonial Marines is back on track. It's been posted with the relevant news links a few pages back.

I'm curious, how did that story strike you? The whole 'SEGA waiting to see how AVP does'? CM has been announced for years, was clearly well into development like that RTS Obsidian was making, but it's continuation depends on AVP? What do you think Gearbox has been doing, and to what degree of success, for the game not to have seen daylight?

I can pose that question quite genuinely in total ignorance of the situation there, it just strikes me as odd that people assume CM will be brilliant and that somehow Gearbox has a team on standby waiting for AVP to sell or fail before... Deciding to release a better game? Hmm.

To be honest linkster, I think with the benefit of hindsight, now that the wave of excitement and hype has washed away and we're left with the finished product, the game is quite clearly decidedly average in most respects. It's a by the numbers fps with aliens and predators in it. The campaigns were too short, uneventful and linear; survivor mode is nothing more than a distraction and multiplayer is fun but flawed with a knackered match making system.

Good effort, but it fell way short of the mark.

I don't recall ever disputing anyone's honest opinion, and I was simply asking what zod thought of the game, that is assuming he had played it.

That's what all the news sites reported, and while that doesn't guarantee it's true, where there's smoke etc etc. let me put it this way: I would have a harder time believing the story if Sega didn't suddenly confirm CM was NOT cancelled immediately after seeing the sales figures of AvP.

But whatever the case, surely more Alien games is a good thing? And a nice healthy competition between you guys and Gearbox is even better, trying to out-Alien each other can only lead to even better games :P

Aye, no question I hope it's great, and I don't care how long it takes them. SEGA might though :P

I thought it was a bit.....meh. It wasn't a bad game, but it's not one I'll be in a hurry to play ever again. It's just a shame that the Aliens & Predator license went on such a mediocre game. I'm just hoping that Colonial Marine is the Aliens game I've been waiting for.

  • 2 weeks later...

I notice the DLC is up - 4 multiplayer maps - for 560 MS Points.

I'm not sure if the Online matches have been patched though. I loaded the game up but no update occurred, and I tried to find a ranked match filtered to 18 people but it just said, "1 player found, searching for 7 players".
