Old School Rave and Jungle

Recommended Posts

DJ Rap used to be a page three model I believe as well - man that is two intersting facts in one day. I am on a roll.

A couple of Junglist highlights from that Moondance comp. I grabbed last week:

Foul Play - Finest Illusion

Leviticus - Burial

Zero B - Lock Up (Monolith Mix)

This track wasn't on it but one of the other tracks featured the same sample. Anybody know what track the opening break is sampled from?

sorry but it sounds like the same break sample used in an SL2 tune or Rebel MC tune if that helps anyone else name it.

It's struck me that there should be hundreds of old rave CDs available for pennies these days. I'm looking for stand out jungle mixes with someone shouting over the top of it. What are the stand out releases that I'm looking for?

This

http://www.discogs.com/Various-AWOL-A-Way-...e/release/41209

Any of the One Nation Tape Packs, Telepathy tape packs, Jungle Fever. if you hear man dem on air horn then that is me. I think there are things like dreamscape but I never went to those just the London raves really so basing on that. Anything in my opinion with the following DJs:

Nicky Blackmarket

Andy C

DJ Hype

DJ Randall

DJ Brockie

Mickey Finn (lol Micky Bloodclot Pussyclot Finn - if you can find the tape pack where he is introduced like this then please please let me know as lost in time)

Ital

and the following MCs

Stevie Hyper D

Dett

Skibadee

MC Five 0

Ragga twins (RAGGA TWINS STEP OUT)

When you say Jungle are you using that to cover the whole spectrum because if you don't have Bukem's Logical Progression you need this - I seem to recall it has a disk with MC Conrad on it.

My first job leaving college was working in Tandy in Walthamstow.

She came in and we got chatting about stuff and she wanted to know where she could get a dongle(pfnarr pfnarr) so she could use a moody version of cubase on the ST.

I'm a nice guy, so I located her a version that didn't need one.

Didn't get a blowjob though. Boo.

Zero B - Lock Up (Monolith Mix)

The break in Lock Up is from 'Let it Go' by KC & The Sunshine Band.

Which reminds me, I'd like to know the break from SL2's Way In My Brain too.

Way in My Brain's break is from 'Chocolate Buttermilk' by Kool & The Gang (about 1.25 in).

Sample sources are the best type of schoolin'. Cheers decider, great tracks.

Any interviews online with any of the old guard in terms of UK Hardcore? There's enough classic breaks floating around for me to assume that the scene evolved from the hip-hop phenomenon of the 80s. I'd love to know just how it all came about.

Although I doubt that they went right to the source for their breaks, digging out the originals has exposed me to stuff I never would've heard otherwise. In fact, I don't think I'd know about half as many artists and tracks if I hadn't heard them sampled on an old school track.

There's a handful on Back to the Old Skool. It's worth searching their forums too, I'm sure there's a few others that are linked from there.

There's a recent video interview with Floyd Dyce from Production House on Youtube as well.

I think you're pretty much dead on regarding the hip-hop connection. I think in most of the interviews I've read, they've said that they came from a hip-hop DJing background, which explains why there's tons of rap samples in the tunes of the day.

It originates from back in the day when you used to go to a rave and the dj's wouldn't just play one genre of music all night like nowadays, it was acid house, detroit techno, hip hop and soul from the US all mixed together and hardcore is just the uk version of all those styles fused together (and pitched up).

Shut Up and Dance were one of the originators:

Been meaning to post for weeks, just to say that this thread is a genuine credit to the music folder. No arguing about genres, eras or who is shit/awesome, just quality fucking tunes.

Good work to everyone involved! Keep it up!

was searching for something and found this. Pure jokes man, the Ragga Twins tryin to get the rewind on the Hyper D track.

Just reminds me of a Kool FM rave with Nicky Blackmarket and all the Kool FM MCs on stage Ragga Twins, Hyper D, MC Five-0, Dett, Skibadee and none of them letting Shabba near the mic. Happy Days

And taking it back to the hardcore...

[yt]3DKJsl_tKb0[/yt]

[yt]AQAfp2N4zxA[/yt]

Listening back, surprised how complex and busy the early Hardcore tracks were. There's so many ideas and melodies stuffed into each tune - the Nebula II track sounds like some megamix or something, just constantly moving onto something new.

Some Happy Hardcore for good measure too:

[yt]cjyb8h31WFw[/yt]

Goes to shit at about the 3.20 mark, but up until then what a fucking tune.

Some of the other Vibes & Wishdokta tracks have bits like that in too:

Doesn't stop it from being an immense piano track though, sounds even better pitched up a bit. Bizarre choice of Ultrasonic sample though.

Dudes. I have done a mix for an all city podcast. Links are here:

http://all-cityrecords.com/index.php/2010/...dcore-junglism/

http://soundcloud.com/allcitydublin/all-ci...rdcore-junglism

First for download, second for stream. It has a few more modren tunes from Olan before my mix, which starts at 24 minutes and is mostly 94 business - probably my favourite period of hardcore / jungle / dnb. It's a few takes stitched together, but if it worked for Miles, it works for me. Here's the tracks:

**Don Rosco Hardcore Junglism Mix**

Oaysis - Open Secrets (Moving Shadow)

Tek 9 - Dem a gwan like dem know badness (Reinforced)

Smokey Joe - A Special Request (Noise of Art rmx) -(Labello Blanco)

Gappa G & Hypa Hyper (Man & Hattan EP)

SMF - How Many Ways - (Rugged Vinyl)

A Sides - Murder (Strictly Underground)

EZ Rollers - Believe (Foul Play remix) (Moving Shadow)

Mad Dog - Easy (Underdog)

DJ Hype - Shot in the Dark (Gunshot mix) (Suburban Base)

From the man like the Pennywise - Suspension of Disbelief (Symphony Sounds)

DJ Solo - Darkage (Production House)

Hyper On Experience - Lord of the Null Lines (Foul Play remix) (Moving Shadow)

Plasmic Life - Water Baby (Brain)

DJ Fokus - Trigger Happy (Voyager remix) (Lucky Spin)

Invisible Man - Skyliner (Timeless Recordings)

Oaysis - Outcry (Moving Shadow 2 on 1)

Rufige Cru - Fury (Moving Shadow 2 on 1)

Prior to that, the tunes from Olan are:

Sun Ra - Perfect Man (Jazzman)

Water Color - All Bundled Into One (Now Again/Jazzman)

PUDGE - Merci Mercy Weak (Ramp)

Kode 9 - You Dont Wash (Dub) (K7)

T Williams - Afric (Local Action)

Zomby - Godzilla (Ramp)

Charles Trees - Mahaogni (Musique Large)

Jnero Jarel - Android Romance pt I & II (Label Who)

Ill Blu - Dragon Pop (Hyperdub)

I can't believe the times I had out at parties, clubs, warehouses listening to some amazing stuff like the above. hundreds and hundreds of tracks that I'll probably never dance my arse off to again.

Only thing that makes me upset at getting older.

SORRY FOR THE OVERKILL
