The MICHAEL thread

Off The Wall is one of the greatest albums ever recorded.

It will never fade, it will never lose its shine. It is magic. It is a young man on top of his game, primed to take on the world.

It will outlive every one of us.

Obviously, most of the love for his early days. But in balance, even on his 'crap' final album invincible, amongst the forgettable R&B tracks and ballads, there were a couple of great tunes.

This.

This is the best thing he ever done.

It totally sealed my love for music, despite what little I had at the time/age.

God I enjpyed that, been so many years. Realise now why I cant stand Timberlake and Britney and all that shite, it's like watching a drunk relative trying to do what came so easily to him

Nah, not really.

For MJ to continue doing what he did, he needed to be who he was - someone who didn't properly grow up and not even seemingly learn responsibilities or whatever. Britney and JT are cut from a different cloth; alright, Britney's pretty messed up herself, but not to the extent that MJ was. Michael's shtick was bigger and far more impressive, but that shouldn't take away from the other two, who can still hold their own.

And he also produced (and wrote?) Do The Bartman. "If you can do the Bart you're bad like Michael Jackson!"

Apart from the Beatles, Michael Jackson was probably the first pop musician I was aware of. It probably isn't an exaggeration to say he's the biggest pop star to die since John Lennon - not even Freddie Mercury and Frank Sinatra were as famous.

I remember when Dangerous came out I saw the video for Black or White on the ITV Chart Show (!), and kids in the primary school playground were going round singing Bad. ;)

Earth Song may have one of the most heavy-handed lyrics and videos ever, but I really like the "aaahh-aahh-aaah, ooh-ooh-ooh" chorus. Smooth Criminal and Billie Jean are probably my favourites.

I only bought Off the Wall and Thriller a couple of years ago. But I only really paid attention to the hits I already knew - I wish I'd listened to the others more now. I should probably get a Jackson Five compilation too.

One of the weirdest things about that Martin Bashir documentary was that he seemed genuinely unable to understand how anyone could interpret phrases like "sleeping in the same bed as a child" as a bad thing, and probably wouldn't be a good thing for him to admit on international TV. I know people say he had a "childlike innocence", but considering he grew up in a showbiz industry full of decadance and papparazzi, and was an expert manipulator of hype and PR machines, his naivety there was hard to explain.

This is the thread for heaping love on Michael, regardless of his failings otherwise. Also, Britney can fuck off forever, who has absolutely no skills presentationally, aurally or in her awful movements, if you could ever call it "dancing". Justin is much better in all three aspects, but will still never be remembered or honoured in the same light as MJ.

Michael may have been hyped up, but it was never like he didn't live up to it, unlike Britney and her various embarressing "comebacks", as well as countless showreels airing on TMF/4 Music channels. Ultimately amounting to the most empty bullshit hype ever.

I had completely forgotten about this song. Wasent there a really good remix by someone too ?

Watching alot of the coverage on the music channels I keep seeing music videos, especially from the 90's like Jam and Stranger in Moscow that I loved at the time but had sadly forgotten.

Still one of my fave Simpsons episodes. I know MJ was just reading a script for this, but he must've still 'got' it. The fact he agreed to it made me hold out for a return to relative sanity. Alas no

I think he probably didn't think about the subject matter too much; more likely he was simply a big fan of the show. And loved cartoons, probably.

One of my favourite episodes too. I remember seeing it when it first came out when I was 8 or 9. I was crazy about The Simpsons and probably at the peak of my Michael Jackson fandom. To have the two things combined together was pretty mind-blowing. I had the episode taped off Sky and would watch the episode over and over again.

I'm pretty sure he wrote the "Happy Birthday Lisa" song too.

Or as the writers of I Can't Believe It's An Unofficial Simpsons Guide put it: "His agreement to provide the voice of Leon in this episode proves either that he's got a more developed sense of his own ridiculousness than you might expect, or that he just didn't understand what the writers were saying about him."

One for the b-boys!

That intro

Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day was also always adored by Lockers. Its used here as the first song in a battle which many think of as the greatest locking battle of all time.

There's a DJ mix by Z-Trip where he juggles the opening of Great to be Here for about 5 minutes; I was welling up by the end the first time I heard it, there's something about the break that triggers something in me.

I ended up watching the Newsnight Michael Jackson special last night. I can't stand the pair of them but Miranda Sawyer and Paul Morley were claiming that black America disowned Jackson after the Bad album, when really the fact is he never lost that fanbase. Harlem was blowing up on the news last night. MTV had a call-in where Snoop, Rev Run and Fat Joe called in saying what he meant to them. When alive he had Pharrell, Timberland and Will I Am saying they wanted to work with him on a new album.

I guess for dickheads like Paul Morley he thinks because he stopped giving a shit after Thriller so did everyone else.

It was more a case of sane America disowning him after it became clear he shared his bed with young boys.
