'9' - CGI Movie from Timur Bekmambetov & Tim Burton

Just saw this last night and yeah the lack of involvement just sank the film for me. Especially having only seen Up a week or so ago, which manages to draw you into its characters' stories so well. It all felt a bit like watching cutscenes from a game really, lovely design but fairly flat lighting compared to the similarly apocalyptic Wall-E sections (and I know it's not entirely fair to hold every CGI animation to Pixar's high watermark, but there you go).

Bit disappointed with it in all. And the poster has anointed its director 'visionary', like Zack Snyder. Which is funny, but not as funny as the trailer for Jennifer's Body which hailed Diablo Cody as a 'genius'.

I didn't think it was much cop. I don't think it improved upon the short film, and the short film was arguably more exciting than the full film.

The voices ruined it. The script didn't make the voices worthwhile, they were just saying shit. You couldn't really identify with the characters because they were just numbers. The plot seemed a bit half arsed too. The short gave the impression of a journey - a lone wanderer on an odyssey - but the full film, to me, abandoned that in favour of a lacklustre story that jumped about so fast nothing had any impact. In fact the only bit that felt emotive was the last 5 minutes or so, which would have been better if you could identify with the characters.

The visual style and animation was brilliant for the best part and to that end I felt I was just watching, well, a tech demo really. Nothing else lived up to it and it's a damn shame.

I too will also add, however, that I've been seriously spoilt by Up.

You're really not missing all that much. My friends and I went to see this two weeks ago and all came out disappointed. It looks pretty cool, but that's about all it's got. The story is quite terrible, both pointless and confusing while the characters lack any real charm or interest. I'll never both watching it again.

It isn't "unfair". They're both feature films; Ice Age was produced on a budget a fraction of a Pixar movie, but it worked due to brilliant physical comedy. There's no reason why less resources and a lower budget can't be used to their full to create a film that stands toe-to-toe with its competitors.

I really enjoyed it. I think it helped that I didn't know much at all about it, and I certainly wasn't expecting much from it.

As said earlier in the thread though, I'm not quite sure who it's aiming for either.
