So I own all the BS and lucasarts point and clicks but they don't work on mt eeepc through wine. Not for any techy reason other than it can't see any of my drives. Its driving me fucking nuts I tell thee.

Anyone got any tips?

Use the Linux version of ScummVM to play them instead?

Slightly off topic but I just started playing Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars thanks to my flatmate and I can't believe that I'd never even touched this before. I'm loving it so far (only played for about an hour or so) and it makes such a refreshing break from SFIV.

I assume they have kept Barrington Pheloungs score in the remakes? It's just that the new trailers they have shown had music that sounded bugger all like the original.

Didn't realise Barrington Pheloung did game music!

He did the amazing 'Inspector Morse' theme.

Yeah he did the first 2 broken swords I think. Whichever was the first 3d one (number 3?) is where they used someone else. It always gave me that "morse" cosy feeling hearing the music while playing the first 2 games.

I have been having a short dabble with the yarr of this and am a bit concerned as it doesn't seem to be in proper widescreen. I'm hoping it's because its a yarr as it is halfway between 4:3 and 16:9. I've been reading up on devs taking shortcuts with Wii games to get slightly better performance by not filling the screen. Where CRt's auto overscan and hide it, that doesn't always happen with LCD's and plasmas. I really hope the retail version is fullscreen as otherwise I'll be disappointed.

metroid prime did the same thing - small black bars down the sides...

does it play well? Both this and Madword come out on the same day... scheduling fail.

I literally just stuck it in for a minute or two. I'll have a proper go tomorrow night and report back. When I saw the size of the screen I didn't want to get too involved in case there was something wrong with it. Plus, using a plasma I didn't want borders down each side of the screen really. I tried zooming in, but of course with a game like this you need to see all of the screen, not have any cut off.

I will have ago though and see how much waggle is involved.

My Game pre-order has arrived, just £17.99 thanks to them honouring their pricing error. I'm really looking forward to playing it tonight, it's been a few years since I played the original PC version and the load time crippled PSOne version. I just hope they haven't changed the intro sequence, the original is a classic.

you're in for a fright - the beginning is *completely* different (I'm led to believe)

It is an all new beginning featuring Nico. The new puzzles seem to be sliding ones and a decryption which I found quite tedious to solve. The game does not fill the screen which looks bad and there is a marked difference between the quality of new voices and the old ones but not as bad as the terrible movie parts, which look awful at times.

I would get the PC version instead, and watch the extra stuff on YouTube, this release is not worth the money.

I'm still going to buy it because I want to support these kinds of games and Broken Sword would be in my top 10 of all time but they really should have reanimated the old cutscenes. It's not even like there were many of them to begin with. I can't say I blame them not re-recording all the old audio because I get the feeling this was probably made on a shoestring budget and there was tons of dialogue and characters in the game.

To be honest I'm a bit disappointed the game is full price but I can't blame them when you see Nintendo selling slightly spruced up old games for the same amount.

I thought the dialogue was re-recorded? Or did they only get the original actors in for the new scenes?

Have to say I probably wouldn't have bought this if it wasn't for Game's pricing error but i'm looking forward to having a go on this tonight. I never played the original, although did enjoy Broken Sword: the Sleeping Dragon on the Xbox despite the relatively poor reviews it got.

AFAIK they got them in for the new scenes.

This is miles better than the Sleeping Dragon by the way :(

Yep the intro has changed, it now seems to be Nico's story instead of George's and her voiceover at the start is nowhere near as good as his. It's also much more self aware than I remember it with Nico complementing suggesting outloud ways to solve the puzzle. Not impressed so far and the borders around the screen are very noticeable.

If anyone is interested the DS version appears to be exactly the same as the Wii version only without speech. To search an area you have to hold the stylus down on the screen and drag it around until a context sensitive area appears and is signified by a magnifying glass, cogs or a hand pointing if you can move to a different area. I am not a fan of this kind of control especially when they seemed to have hit on the ideal method for doing it on a portable platform with the GBA port where you moved George around and when he was near an area of interest an icon would appear.

I was going to buy this when out and about today but everyone was charging 40 quid for the wii version! Ridiculous. That's a tenner more than they were charging for Madworld and the same as Resi 5. I bought both Broken Sword 1 and 2 for a fiver five years ago. That's an absurd mark-up for a couple of hours of new content.

a bit of a massive facepalm though - by the sounds of it, they've scrimped on the development with bad audio and cutscenes which will lead to low scoring reviews, poor sales and yet another excuse to say 3rd party games don't sell.

when oh when will they learn...

Had a quick go of the DS version last night, and it's really quite good! The movies, backdrops and animation all look lovely - much nicer than the GBA version - and it controls really well with the stylus. It's a shame there's no speech (the game only takes up 64MB, could it have included some speech if it was bumped up to 128MB and compressed a bit more?), and it can be a bit distracting when it plays a video on the bottom screen, but displays some speech bubbles on the top screen; you don't know where to look sometimes.

Anyway, I think this'll definitely be worth a buy. It's still quite expensive, but considering I'm far more likely to play through it all on the DS than sit there and play the PC versions I have, it'll be worth it. I'd love to see more 2D adventure games like this on the DS.

Yeah, I reviewed the Wii version of this today, and £40 is a total rip-off, especially as half the old voice recordings sound as if they were done in a cave, while the old cutscenes have been really badly compressed. It just makes the new stuff look (and sound) jarring by comparison.

The new puzzles and story are really quite well done, too. It's a shame, because I think the price and the evident lack of budget have scuppered the chances of this being a bit of a cult hit. That said, it depends on expectations - perhaps it's hovering around just under the top 40 and will make a profit on fairly moderate sales thanks to its excessive price. I just hope it sells well enough to convince other people it's worth making more point-and-clickers for the Wii.
