Broken Sword coming to DS&Wii

Everyone seems to have heard of the Spanish bug but when I played the GBA version that was not the bug that forced me to restart the game. If you save your game in basement of the pub in Ireland when you come to reload it George is stuck in a glitching animation loop and the game then freezes. This was the point I started to use all three save slots on the cartridge but I don't think these bugs are exclusive to the GBA version, I recall them being in the original PC and Playstations versions as well.

This is wonderful news; I'd be very happy to play through Broken Sword 1 again after all these years. I actually really liked Broken Sword II, as well, though the series has got worse with each game (ok, it got massively worse with 3, and I never bothered with 4 because it got bad feedback from forum folk even if some press reviews were again bizarrely positive - what's up with those reviewers!?)

The music, writing, animation, puzzles... all wonderful. Makes me feel all fuzzy just remembering it. And the Wii pointer will be perfect (unless Revolution some how screw up the controls.)

Depends how they market it. I think these type of games, like Professor Layton, will really appeal to the Brain Training crowd.

Yeah.

It could also be like another Myst or Riven. Perhaps it's a stupid link, I don't know. But I remember everyone's dads playing those games when I was younger. And they sold millions.

Broken Sword could be marketed as the sort of peaceful puzzle game the parents will want to solve together once the kids have gone to bed (even though it's obviously much more than that..)

But I doubt it will be. :)

From the Revolution website:

Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars - The Director's Cut builds on the original, boasting a new and explosive narrative interwoven with the first story. New puzzles have been added for Nintendo DS and Wii that specifically utilize Nintendo's unique control methods. The game also features stunning animated facial expressions drawn by Dave Gibbons, the artistic genius behind the comic book and upcoming movie, Watchmen.

"These new platforms and their innovative controls enabled us to translate and enrich the point-and-click gaming experience in a way that no other console allowed before," said Charles Cecil, founder of Revolution Software and designer of the Broken Sword series. "Through Dave's animated faces, the game's characters are portrayed as empathetic and emotional - driving the narrative in a way that has never been done before in an adventure game. The Director's Cut has allowed me to deliver my true vision for the series."

Is any else a bit nervous about these new puzzles that take advantage of the Wii's controls and the new narrative elements? I am, only because of Revolution's recent track record. The appalling action elements in the third (and from what I hear, the forth) games is what ruined them (and I found the story and overall atmosphere in the third to also be a huge step down from the previous two.) This isn't a point against the Wiimote at all, because like I said before, I think it could work beautifully with the game. New puzzles which are specifically based around the controls, though, make me worried: I don't want some awful waggling puzzles chucked in that don't fit in with the tone of the game or the rest of the gameplay. Revolution have proven that they're not too good at action or stealth, and I don't think they'd be too great at making waggle minigames fit in with the Broken Sword universe, either. And I don't think Broken Sword needs an "explosive" new narrative element: it had enough drama as it was, and I appreciated its subtlety.

I normally welcome new content, and had the last two Broken Sword titles been better than they were, I'd be excited about it. But I'm not sure...

Still, I'm very glad it's coming to Wii in some shape or form.

I was going to replay this on he PSP recently but now might decide to hold back for these versions. Would certainly be a lovely sofa game to play with the wiimote or a stylus game in bed- how would I decide which damn one though?

Nope, me too.

You know what I would like? For a team to take the LucasArts SCUMM engine as used in Monkey Island 2 or Fate of Atlantis, maybe update it a bit to work with FMV and high resolution graphics and create a game from there. Not based on action or stealth or new features or innovation, but just by telling a great story with great characters and clever puzzles. While technology has progressed loads, there still hasn't been an adventure as good as the LucasArts and Revolution games from the early 90's. And this isn't all nostalgia and rose-coloured specs and all that. I regularly replay them and they're still brilliant today.

After seeing hints of it for months on Revolution's forum I'm glad its been officially announced at last. I don't know if it's mentioned elsewhere but I think Sumo have been devloping it and the DS version won't have speech because Ubisoft wouldn't opt for a bigger cart storage size. I don't think it's been confirmed anywhere whether the Wii version will have voices or not.

Well if they aren't going for a bigger cart storage size to fit the voices on then maybe they don't think it'll sell very well? If someone like Nintendo was publishing it I could imagine them doing some Professor Layton like adverts to sell it to the brain training crowd and it could do really well but I doubt Ubisoft are going to do that. Shame.

Did you ever play Still Life? I quite enjoyed that (bar the stupid fucking cooking puzzle!). It's not as good as the classics but as a modern one, it's pretty decent.

Considering every version apart from the GBA version has voice acting, I'd be very surprised if it wasn't included here.

Me too, but as it definitely isn't supposed to be in the DS version (Rev dev tonyw has mentioned it several times on their forum blaming the publisher for the decision) and as this is meant to be a Director's Cut version with new sections then they'd need to get new dialogue recorded and I'm not sure they'd get the actors in to record it for one version if the other isn't going to have it, especially as it all seems to be fairly low-budget. That said, I think the only way this is likely to have any real success on the Wii is if it has a dialogue soundtrack so I fricking hope it has one.

No voice acting means no purchase by default.

It sounds familiar but I don't think I played it. I did play those Syberia games, but they were a bit meh IMO.

So long as you don't move George around the screen by blowing into the fucking microphone then I'm all for this!
