Outrun Online Arcade

Online play will still work (or at least work as well as it ever did...) - it uses the Live or PSN servers, so whilst they're running, the game will still do matchmaking etc.

Amazing how many people are saying they wanted to buy it now it's gone. If they'd all done it when it came out, you'd probably have OutRun3 now :P

Hey, I wasn't accusing folk here of not buying it - but wandering around the various news sites that reported it (or at least Eurogamer and C&VG) the comments threads are full of people who claim they wanted to buy it.

One of the big arguments you get when it comes to DLC, is they reckon that at best you'll only get about 40% of the people who bought the game originally to buy the DLC. So DLC does very much rely on sales in the first place (or day one orders if you're aiming to do DLC close to release).

Still, with all those potentially buyers, I wonder how easy we could swap those Ferrari's out for something else... :P

Hey S0L, you should pop over to the NeoGAF thread of puzzlement over why a certain company doesn't bring back their old IP as someone was wondering why a Racers MegaMix hasn't happened and break the bad news to them as your company's name crops up a few times.

Generally licenses work on the production side of things, rather than retail. For example, I did some licensed games for which we had to pay a yearly fee as long as we produced the products containing those games, as well as a fee on every unit sold. I suppose this would include selling the stuff online as every online sale could be considered a new copy. This fee per unit isn't generally a problem, but once sales dwindle the yearly fee can become higher than the revenue the license generates, which is usually the moment to pull the plug. This is probably what happened with Outrun 2.

I worked for a big publisher and when they lost a major licence they were suposed to destroy any unsold stock. What they did was sell it "On consignment" to another distributor who continued to sell the game until it had all been sold through.

Even if an OutRun 3 got greenlit, what turned out to be Revo might make some people wish it didn't exist at all (I always thought people quite liked that game but some recent comments on here paint a quite different picture).

I loved Revo. Especially the PSP version.

I have played seven versions of OutRun 2, and owned five of them.

I've bought around five myself - sadly I sold my home console versions so now I just have Outrun 2006 on my (unmodded) PSP or - don't laugh - the PC version...

The PC version doesn't support FFB and lacks some of the animations from the Arcade version, the JPN exclusive Outrun2 SP for PS2 has both FFB and the anims put back in.

Maybe S0L can get someone at Sumo to give us a detailed breakdown of the variants of the game (and the supposed bugs), his company did program all the conversions :)

Who'd laugh? It's the best version! HUD aside, it runs at a higher res and has all the tracks!

It somehow doesn't feel as fun playing it at my desk though. :P Maybe with the right speaker and monitor setup and one of those Windows 360 controllers... :wub:

I never really understood the love for this game.

Probably down to your personal tastes, which from the sorts of games and systems you have been positive about that I can recall wouldn't be that surprising, you do hate the Dreamcast afterall :), and this game has that sort of ethos and spirit.

I played the cab version of Outrun 2 quite a lot when we had it at work, and the Xbox port was good fun. But these kind of games, just like most other Sega arcade games/ports, just don't hold my interest for a couple of minutes. This is probably the reason why I never find the 'subtleties' or 'depth' that's supposed to be in there. For me it never rises above the polished throwaway gaming experiences to kill a little time with.

It only needs four and a half, that's the beauty of it. ;)

It's not something you're going to play for hours on end, but every time I boot it up and slide around a corner under blue skies to the sound of Risky Ride or Splash Wave, it puts a smile on my face, without fail. :)

I got to play this for the first time yesterday on Xbox 360, and whilst it's old news to everyone else, I noticed that it doesn't have the Outrun 2 courses.

So, what's the definitive home version of Outrun 2? Does the Xbox version of Coast-to-Coast run on 360?

The JPN PS2 OutRun2 SP with a FFB Wheel, closest thing to the Arcade original.

Or I suppose a toss-up between either the Xbox or PC version of 2006 if that version is out of the running. (Unless you want the bonus tracks, then you only have the original Xbox conversion of OutRun 2 to choose from).
