Help me get into "dance" music

I echo Campfire's reservations about Daft Punk as an album band. There's some of my all time favourite song writer deep down in there somewhere, but my God they can get stale. Da Funk's a prime example. An absolutely massive tune the first time you hear it, but sans any variety whatsoever and it quickly dries. But that's precisely why Alive is all kinds of amazing. Taking material from all three studio albums, its both schizophrenic, while possessing an absolutely astonishing flow that, well, just makes you want to dance. It's the best mix I've ever heard, and I'd be tempted to say anyone who doesn't like it probably doesn't like dance music. It's as big as it gets.

On a totally different note, apart from the usual big beats shit, my taste in dance normally veers into the ninja tune / warp records world of eclectic oddities. And from that I'd like to recommend an album I picked up on an impulse buy years ago on the strength of a box quote that read "like shoving Aphex Twin up Miles Davis' arse". Whether that appeals to you or not I guess is a matter of personal taste, but for me the stakes could scarcely be higher, and this album didn't disappoint. I'm talking about Jaga Jazzist's 'A Livingroom Hush'. Give 'Animal Chin' a go and if you find love like I did on first listen, I don't need to tell you to pick up the CD.

And no discussion of electronica would be complete, in my opinion, without a mention for Squarepusher's Beepstreet. From his Hard Normal Daddy album - which is another classic for Jazz heads - it mixes the manic accessibility of drum n bass with the sweet melodies you'd expect to hear coming from Boards of Canada, all of which is of course performed with the expert musicianship you would expect from mr Squarepusher. A stone cold classic.

Just thought i'd mention I bought Alive 2007 about an hour ago on the strength of the obvious enthusiasm Calashnikov has for it and WOW!

Its rare you listen to an album that makes you grin like an idiot- this is one of those albums. I liked Daft Punk beforehand but this comes together so well its almost unbelievable.

First new album of 2009, and a great start!

EDIT: BOMBNIZZLE is an awesome description :P

Propellerheads

Fatboyslim (and basically any Big Beat)

Chemical Brothers

Prodigy

Leftfield

The Streets

Electro stuff from Radiohead (Idioteque etc.)

I'm not really that knowledgeable about dance music, but once I'd got out of my '95 dance-pop phase (Baby D ftw! :( ) I started out with some of the artists you mention - Prodigy, Chemical Bros., Leftfield (my listening was heavily influenced by WipEout, if you couldn't already guess. (Ooh, FSoL might be another one to try)) I think Daft Punk would be worth a listen (Homework and Discovery in particular), but personally I also liked the mellower side of some of the listed artists' tracks (Prodigy's 3 Kilos, Leftfield's El Cid, Chemical Bros., The State We're In) so I went and listened to stuff like Lemonjelly

I used to be.

Gique knows them i think.

Their known for immensely sinister Voice activated (best use of a Speak n Spell AND a killer B'line)...

and STERILIZATION which is a bit harsher.

I've got their first LP and did a mix with those tracks (and Gique who's done some killer electro) a while ago.

yeah, dopplereffekt is actually just one guy, gerald.

we had a very VERY messy night out in switzerland once, where he got drunk and basically let slip a ton of stuff  was gonna do a remix for him a long time ago, but it fell through...

cool guy, likes his booze...

he's also known as 'der zyklus', 'japanese telecom' and 'other people place'.

if you like his stuff, try drexciya , ectomorph (who is often mistaken for drexciya / dopplereffect) and elecktroids.

cheers for some of the links here, kavinsky is fucking incredible - i've been totally out of the loop for a few years, time to do some research again!!

if anyone can reccommend any more slamming french style electro disco with heavy synth action , let me know..

Has Gerald been the only member of Dopplereffekt the whole time? I thought he'd worked with a few people under the name, but then I suppose that's all guesswork.

Drexciya are my favourite thing ever.

pretty much, from time to time he may have had a few buddies in to assist, but he's basically all the german pseudonyms.. he's also heinrich muller..

drexciya also did the awesome labrat XL album, also the utterly fantastic abstract thought 'hypothetical situations' LP

the elecktroids project on warp was a whole bunch of detroit guys all doing a similar sound.. dopplereffekt did the hidden track that also naughtily popped up on his compilation LP (which originally had a swastika instead of a hammer and sickle sleeve)

Have you heard any dubstep? Most of it these days has turned all noisy and horrible like dnb, but there've been some gems...as far as albums go;

Horsepower Productions - In Fine Style : http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=152560&...ighlight=152574 (utterly brilliant)

Dusk & Blackdown - Margins Music : http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=114915 (nice soundtrack to a walk around town)

Pinch - Underwater Dancehall : http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=56131 (minimal deepness - avoid the 2nd cd though!)

2562 - A Made Up Sound : http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=114915 (absolutely superb)

Headhunter - Nomad : http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=144826 (sort of dubby techno/dubstep crossover stuff)

Skream - Skream : http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=152642 (party music)

Burial's two albums, Burial - http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=21299 - and Untrue - http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=56124 (sort of melancholic garage)

Oh and I can't stop listening to this set - Kode9 B2B Benny Ill 13th February 2002

for some reason dubstep just leaves me cold.. the tempo and the sounds used seem like a musical oxymoron to me...

same here

a friend recently came back from london during his first year at uni and was telling me about how he's really into dubstep because of one of his flatmates... listened to some for myself, don't think I've ever felt absolutely literally nothing whilst listening to music like I had with dubstep

don't hate it, don't love it, genuinely just completely indifferent to it

yup, it just doesn't motivate my body to move, all the sounds just seem to beat the wrong tempo for my sensibilities, and believe me i've tried - i've been to a fair few dubstep nights with live acts and DJ's, so i've heard a huge spectrum of international dubstep.. I can nod my head to it, but the entire concept of going to a club for it completely leaves me cold..

allow me to give one recommendation for an ignored analogue electro gem.

333.jpg

Mat101 from italy : Goodbye Mum

These guys used to fucking rock, they remixed one of my tracks on my 1st 12" on my own label (device)

The entire album is a love letter to video game culture, analogue synths and electro.. it's a damn shame they ceased the MAT101 project to concentrate on Jollymusic and other pseudonyms..

The name comes from the concept of a space invader conscripted into the military to fight earth, he learns he is in the 1ST WAVE of attackers, and everyone knows what happens to the 1st wave in space invaders..

The CD version has a 'map' of the album laid out like the ghosts and goblins stage map..

Goodbye mum

Eniac Ep

http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=115288

wicked stuff.. high tempo Italian electronics with awesome melodies and electro beats.. guaranteed to bring out the robot in you.

The encore may be humanity's greatest achievement. I'm probably underselling it.

The next time Daft Punk tour, they might as well go the whole hog and drop in the vocal line from Music Sounds Better With You. My head would probably explode.

Hell, they could even throw in So Much Love To Give as well, since they were happy to mix Together into the encore.

Not off the top of my head, I have a load of dodgy recordings from the tour and they definitely used it at some point, I'm sure.

god! those bloody french!! I just got the ANORAAK Ep.. lush kraftwerk/bochum welt analogue synths with nik kershaw-esque vocals

Ahhhh, that's what they remind me of! Kershaw!
