Your Top Five Beers

Wow, hard choice. I'd go, no particular order:

1. Belhaven Best (Don't know what I'd think of this now, but it was the first beer I enjoyed rather than endured)

2. Becks

3. McEwans 80 (Don't get this down south, so haven't had it for ages. But it sustained me through university)

4. Deuchars IPA

5. Sam Smiths Wheat beer.

Urgh, I tried Innis and Gunn today, utterly rancid, not my thing at all. Got a bottle of Kasteel Cru chilling which I'm really looking forward to.

I didn't like I&G either, but then I don't like whisk(e)y. Kasteel cru . . . was meh to me, lacking any flavour. How did you find it?

Leffe Brune

My favourite dark beer by a mile. Really powerful, full flavour but doesn't leave you feeling like a tramp afterwards. Steadily drinkable to boot.

Have you tried the Dubble and Treble versions of Brown? Treble is fantastic.

My list:

Grolsch Herstbok (bottle)

Grolsch Kanon (bottle)

Hoegaarden (bottle)

Leffe Brown Treble (bottle)

Caffreys (from the tap)

Plus there's a brand of Rose beer here, which is really nice. Prefer it to lagers. Then again I'd rather drink an Snakebite than an lager.

I'm not a fan either. Wouldn't describe it as rancid, but it's certainly an extremely bland - if well marketed - beer.

I can't believe there are people putting Budweiser in their top 5. It's a drinkable alcoholic beverage, but top 5?

Agreed, but I'd probably put it higher than some of the stuff that's got a mention in this thread. Cobra? Christ.

Some of the choices here are terrible (Budweiser ffs!), others are awesome (Anchor Steam is so good). Here’s my top 5:

Westmalle Tripel

Bombardier - has to be Cask, bottled it’s not as nice

Pilsner Urquell - on tap in Prague, outside of Czech Republic it’s doesn’t seem to be the same beer

Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA

Whales Tale Pale Ale

Flower's Strong Ale

Tomothy Taylor's Landlord

Young's Pale Ale

Tetley's Dark Mild

Copper Dragon's Golden Pippin

All draft of course.

There's a fuck-ton more (e.g Innis & Gunn) but I can't think of them all, special mention for Kwaak (8%) and the amazing glass which requires one of your shoes as a deposit in The Crescent, Salford. :)

I really like Kolsch, the type of beer they make in Koln (Cologne). If you ever happen to be in Germany, I can't recommend it enough. Germany has great lagers all over the place though, they're the kings of beer. Although I think our Dutch lagers are quite good as well.

Kolsch is terrific. Franconia - and Bamberg in particular - is the true beer connosieur's paradise in Germany though. A city of 80,000 people with something like 12 breweries, most producing absolutely first class bottom-fermented beer in many varieties. Ranging from what would get called "lager" here to the extraordinary Rauchbier Marzen of Schlenkerla, which is black and has a smoky aroma that brings to mind bacon and smoked cheese. Sounds horrific, but it's very easy to get a taste for it.

Seriously, if you think of yourself as a beer lover, you owe it to yourself to visit at least once.

I've spent literally minutes of my life compiling the votes in this thread and am happy to announce the points awarded so far. I've made a number of assumptions:

  1. Leffe defaults to a vote for Leffe Blonde
  2. Where people have specified "no particular order" I've awarded points from the top down

A number of people put up separate lists for lager and ale; I haven't been able to include those but Lazlo, Paolo Alto, Podger and Nap0leon, if you'd like to post again with a single list I'll ammend. Apologies for the format but I don't know how to make a nice looking list.

The list format is: Beer (points) (number of votes) (average points per vote).
