The system itself seems to have been tweaked a fair bit - its general gameplay loop is even more of a constant endorphin assault than the last version's. If you're playing well you're pretty much never out of counter or break mode.

Yeah, Zed Blade gives score for shooting basically anything, so that a 'serious' scoring run will pretty much always involve scraping floors as much as possible, and hanging around milking bosses for ages. IIRC you can get two extends before the end of stage 1 this way. (Certainly at least one extend.)

Ooh, twin stick shooter "Never Awake" is only four weeks away!
Try the demo if you haven't already - https://store.steampowered.com/app/1727180/NeverAwake/

Out on the Switch (and other consoles) too:

NeverAwake is a nightmarish twin-stick shooter with a unique worldview and original game rules. The girl fights against vegetables, dogs, school friends, and other things she hates. What does the girl see at the end of the battle? And will she be able to wake up?

NeverAwake has a unique worldview with its high quality hand-drawn graphics and beautiful animations. The enemies are not demons…but vegetables and dentists that the girl hates. Things and creatures that everyone has had a bad experience with at one time or another become monsters and attack the protagonist.

With over 80 levels, dozens of bosses, and a unique gameplay system that allows players to retry many levels, NeverAwake is suitable for both beginner shooters and experts. Combine a multitude of weapons and accessories to fight off the monsters in your nightmares.

Doesn't look too shabby and the main character reminds me of Linda in Treasure's Freak Out.

I have to say, I wasn't too keen on the final release, though others enjoyed it more.
I finished all worlds, route A and B, but I didn't find it much fun to play.
It had me going through previous levels and completing annoying challenges in order to unlock the final world as well :S
It really outstays its welcome. Would have much preferred a well balanced tight campaign instead of all those levels.
It does look nice though.

They don't give you interesting patterns to dodge, the boss fights are more about just learning when he's gonna lunge at you and dashing out of the way.
It's not great. Certainly didn't feel the need to play any levels and beat my time/score after the one run through.

It's aimed more at the casual twin stick crowd than us nutters. You'll get some chill fun out of it, but don't expect too much. They patched it recently to make it easier for some reason. There were a couple of levels that took a couple of goes and they were the most interesting parts, so hopefully they haven't flattened the difficulty too much.

I swallowed my pride and switched to easy mode for now on zed blade, which I have to say isn't that much bloody easier!
I switched to the three way shot as well and that definitely seems the way to go for survival when using autofire.
Wave is better for scoring, but I'm not gonna worry about milking bosses and all that carry on. I don't think you get extends for scoring after a certain point.
I got to stage 6 with 4 lives in stock today and made it halfway through the final stage before giving up the ghost, so it might be coming. I made some daft mistakes on stage 7, but if I can make it to the final stage with those 4 lives, it'll be a breeze!

Dunno if anyone is still plugging away at Dodonpachi? I've been giving it a few more runs recently. The 5th stage is a huge difficulty spike, along with being twice the length of any other stage; that said it builds you up gradually and makes the 1CC feel like a challenge.

I still haven't got it yet (best result is 40% health remaining on the boss, who is brilliantly called "shooty") but this was on a run where I had a couple of really soft deaths earlier on so there's huge room for improvement.

There's one bit towards the end of stage 5 where I'm getting over 50% of the entire run's points too which suggests there's plenty of work left to be done. Current high is ~12,000,000,000.

Also I only discovered today that you could go into a slower and more powerful mode in Power Type??????????? Sometimes I am an idiot

I'm assuming this is daifukkatsu/resurrection?
You've nearly doubled my best score! (6,939,560,818)
Strong style blue or green ship are the easiest clears.

Yeah, stage 5 is long as hell and you've got the dreaded laser wheels to contend with too.

Good luck! Sounds like you're getting close.

Yeah it's DFK - and to be clear this is the Novice mode! Have been using the green ship, which is weird as I would exclusively use blue or red in the original DoDonPachi.

Towards the end of stage 5 there's a bit where there's just a wall of lasers; if you hyper and then laser back at them it'll build up about 5-6,000 combo. I scored 7 billion on that section alone in my last run.

I’m playing Novice mode too. And I think stage 5 is where I can get to on 1 credit. Purely playing for survival to try and get the clear. May allow myself 2 creds to see how far off I am.  (Think I went through Ketsui’s novice mode first time so half expected to do the same here).

I’m glad I’ve put some time into it as I’d kind of written it off as lacking in that “something something” but actually i really like it. Wish there were more/better display options though.

Yeah I can echo this; it just doesn't display anything if I try to run it full screen!

I did get the 2CC earlier today so it's definitely not far off.

Yeah the stage 5 laser death wheels are a big difficulty spike on dfk, i seem to remember learning the route through them but still needing to save up bombs for that part and using hypers to cancel bullets. Good luck!

1cc on Desthsmiles II-X on my second go on the game, didn’t lose a life and ended on 4 lives spare, guessing this means the game is easy considering my weak shmup skill set 🤣

I’ll drive the difficulty level up and see how far I can take it. Didn’t play the extra stage just went straight to the boss level.

Speaking of bosses what a wild selection. A reindeer! A big tall dude that just kinda walks at you! A massive spider thing with a dragon head!

What the? That's pretty impressive!
Yeah, the bosses are so much fun. You need to try the extra stage, the funfair, that's my favourite, on the 360 the framerate used to drop down to single digits with all the rings and crap flying around. You get to fight two creepy dancing teddy bears at the end of that stage.

Got the err 2CC(?) of Novice mode. 1CC is doable if I can manage to not fuck up on the way to the last boss I guess. Only had to continue right at the  end.

Yeah IIX is a fairly easy clear. I'd played a few credits on PS4, but I cleared it on my first go on the PC version the other day (inc. EX stage), dropping down to Level 2 difficulty for the snake stage as I'd been finding that one tricky. However, I did only score 1.5bil, so I have plenty more scoring tactics to learn, and I'm sure it's a lot more difficult if you choose Level 3 throughout. (DS1 uses suicide bullets a lot more liberally if you choose Level 3 five times.)

It's a really excellent game, and its reputation as a risible duffer (presumably due to the initial release's teething issues) is pretty depressing.

The suicide bullets are way more manageable than they are in the first game.
Once you've got your strategy down for the snake stage (you can rinse loads of points out of those rocks!), you'll just be going rank 3 for ever stage. It's not like the first game where you're really taking a risk doing that.

Yeah, I agree. Very unfairly maligned game. It's brilliant fun.

6th on the DS1 leaderboards with a paltry 70m! I figured nobody was playing it, but still. 😛

I did the volcano stage recharge this time. I'd always assumed it was a very high-level trick, but I nailed it on the first attempt. Makes me eager to tidy up the rest of my run and see what I can do!

Ed: thanks, Clippa! Good to know I can just dive right in at max rank.

Yeah, and hold the left and right shot buttons (or hold your lock shot button) to drain the counter so that it hits zero while the bomb is still active. I copied this method without issue:

Presumably it's the same for the other characters, although their familiars work differently...

Aaah, judging by that, I was doing it far too late. He's bombing with around 300 hyper left there. So it looks like you're better off doing it too early since you're using your lockshot to drain the remaining hyper quickly anyway.

Thanks man! I'll give that a try the next time I play.
