Dev said on the steam forums about the missing tutorial "I can't write in detail,There are some reason to this. sry"

"JayLab" on one of the shmup discords wrote some good concise tips for shin.

"For new guys, the basic gameplay loop in shin is something like this:

You have 2 resources, steel orbs and energy. You need energy for phantom mode, orbs for making katanas.

Stockpile orbs by pointblanking enemies with shot, gain energy by pointblanking enemies with focus

Enter phantom mode and use focus shot to fire off the steel orbs & forge katanas (based on # of enemies and bullets hit by the orbs)

Then, fire the katanas to cancel bullets & damage enemies, which generates score items.

Things to know:

Value of score items depletes very quickly so you need to collect them fast (ie. Follow the katanas in)

When in phantom mode enemies generate revenge bullets when destroyed by focus shot, which is good for setting up big katana cancels

You can angle the katanas with your movement.

Theres also a ddp-esque chain counter that you increment by hitting stuff with your wide shot. This is a score multiplier.

Most common ship choice is type-b (kikyou & botan) due to high rate of item generation while pointblanking"

The 360 tutorials are up on youtube.

Haha! Thanks man :D

Some really nice friendly people here and it's always fun for me to share the good news.

This site doesn't have a bad search function neither, it's come in handy more than a few times when I've forgotten a game or needed to look something up.

The M2 christmas stream will be live at 10am in the UK tomorrow morning.

New article here about Aleste Branch here. Sounds like they're not too far off - https://www.timeextension.com/features/we-go-hands-on-with-m2s-aleste-branch-coming-to-a-console-near-you-soon

I see there’s a Rev of Batsugun getting an Exa Arcadia release, hopefully it doesn’t block any console ports of Batsu (my fave looking Toaplan game, just love its style).

Yeah, Batsugun is cool!

I don't think it will stop any future ports. They made an exa version of akai katana, for example, and that didn't stop city connection doing a port for pc and consoles.

I don't think the exa team would even issue a cease and desist to the mame team over such an old game. Not that that ever stops anyone playing the games in mame anyway.

Bitwave have it cued up as one of their toaplan pc ports for next year, they're gonna try and get permission to release the special version along with it, and M2 will get around to releasing it on console eventually. I wouldn't worry about it.

Hahaha what bollocks!

I don't know. It does sound like an excuse, but it can't be down to incompetence, I mean they'd have to go out of their way to remove the tutorial. It'd be far easier just to leave it in.
There might be some strange reason why they couldn't include it.

Thought I'd pop in as I've really been getting back into shmups recently. Going on at the moment:

- Still playing a lot of Sky Force Reloaded (just unlocked B1/Nightmare)

- Playing a bunch of RagingBlasters (1CC'd Normal, and got a non-1CC clear on Hard so far, but have mostly played the Caravan mode a lot.)

- Got Eschatos/Judgement Silversword/Cardinal Sins fairly recently (again, really enjoy the Caravan-style of the latter)

- Played the demos for ZeroRanger, Crimzon Clover, Gunvein, Moon Dancer and Dead End City but haven't forked out for any of them yet.

- Quite enjoyed ImageStriker - worth a punt, it's free.

- Just got Crisis Wing in the sale, which so far seems nice. Trying not to buy everything else and instead focus on what I've got for now...

Oh I have. Only as far as

Spoiler

2-2 now - I suspect it will be too difficult for me to see all that the game has to offer, but it was already well worth it.

It's just a love letter to all things shmup. And the art style is truly striking and sets it apart from nearly anything else out there.

I like the “no platform specified” but the comparison vids are Pcb vs PS4 footage.

I really didn’t appreciate DOJ when I had the PS2 release donks ago but grudgingly picked up a PGM bootleg of it and finally appreciated how great it was. Well, the first 3 levels of it anyway.

Haha :D Yeah, it's not easy, is it?
I haven't spent too much time with it, and I think I prefer dodonpachi. The sprites have always looked a bit fuzzy and blurry to me, but I'm really looking forward to getting stuck into it properly. I wonder if this release will include black label? It must do.

Yeah, ps4 is a given with m2, switch and/or xbox if you're lucky, and PC if pigs fly.

i mean, level 3 is pretty much my limit with every shooter tbf.

I totally agree about the fuzziness. There’s something about Cave’s output that changed around the time of DOJ (maybe DOJ was the first example (thinking about it, more likely to be Ketsui)) where the crispness of things like ESPRADE, and DDP was lost. Maybe it was a change in hardware they were using, dunno.

I will say though that DOJ on a rotated 29” CRT looks the absolute business in a way I didn’t ever appreciate when I had the PS2 version in hori mode.

Wonder if they’ll include the PS2 only modes too. Wasn’t there a mode that only 1 person managed to complete years and years after the original release?

(Death Label is what I’m thinking of:)

iirc the ps2 version looks great on a rotated crt too - but yeah i know what you guys mean about the fuzzyness, when i've played more recently it's been the 360 version or ps2 version via component, both on an lcd and yeah it looks a little fuzzy.

there's very little differences in the black/white label versions iirc, black label is slightly easier in the first loop, more changes in the second loop i think, something to do with extra lives or something - not info i'm ever going to need.

it's probably my 3rd favourite shmup, the music is so good, and it's so mad bastard difficult, not sure why i like it so much as i was terrible at it for years, used to really enjoy credit feeding through it, the last boss last attack pattern was one of my favorite bits even though i probably used 20+ continues to get there.

I don’t even think the fuzziness is an image quality thing it’s more like they changed their style to have an almost pseudo pre rendered vibe to it versus the lush sprite work of ddp etc and it just looks a bit…. Scrappy. But that’s not to say that I don’t think it looks great thesedays.

But yeah I didn’t ever play the PS2 version on its side only ever in hori.

ah right, yeah i see what you mean, they do look more pre-rendered. just coincidence that, for me, doj does look a bit more fuzzy these days because of my display options. i still really like the graphics in doj mind.

To echo Clump above, I would definitely recommend picking up Exceed 3rd: Jade Penetrate Black Package while you have the chance. It's really very good.

Exceed 2nd is quite Ikaruga-ish and I did enjoy it, but I think the rank system in it is flawed and wouldn't suggest it was essential.

I can't even get the first game to run properly on my computer, it runs at about 3fps and I haven't a clue why.

In short: buy the third one it's dead good yeah
