Horrible matchmaking - if you want to see if there are any legs at all in a BJ comeback put him in against a straight ahead kind of fighter, not a pushover but one who is known quantity and very conventional.

Instead they match him with somebody who looks like he's being controlled by your dad playing streetfighter for the first time just mashing all the buttons.

Love Yaya's style but not sure how it will convert to the higher levels, especially 5 round fights, must be very tiring throwing all those crazy kicks.

Would BJ have taken another fight if theyd offered it? (BJ was meant to fight before this and it was cancelled was that against Yair?) Hes never backed away from fighting bigger better guys before. After about 2 mins i started to feel bad for BJ. Is BJ the biggest waste of talent even with winning 2 belts?

The next in the neverending saga of TUF will be Dillashaw vs Garbrandt, which should be worth watching as itll feature ex ufc and 1 active ufc fighter

BJ was supposed to fight Lamas, Siver and Miller but they all fell apart in the last year or two.

I think its totally unfair calling BJ a waste of talent. He was so far ahead of the game at one point it was insane but the sport caught up and he just got passed by. He stood out in the 00's as he had great boxing, BJJ and wrestling. Now all the top guys have those things. Plus in 2017 you now have guys like Yair with ridiculous unorthodox striking.

His record on paper like Couture might not seem that great but he was an all time great just like Couture. Wish he would retire tbh last night was brutal.

It was more of a question than a statement. Personally i wouldnt say he wasted his whole career its just his peak were so high its a shame that he has had some serious beatings. BJs fightvwuth Joe Stevenson which i was at was incredible similarly Sanchez was masterful. Then he looked so awful agaisnt Frankie who is similar sized as him, its like i said a shame that he looked so, dated i guess, against Yair (whom is a bit of an outlier stylewise i suppose).

I know BJ is a pioneer of the sport and very fondly thought of, good luck explaining though to a new fan coming in now (especially from boxing) how a fighter with a 16-11 record is a GOAT or legend, they'll assume he's one those fabled journeyman types more famous for saving cards at notice or gamely going being fed to up and coming fighters as a test on the way up.

Think BJ went for a takedown very very early near the cage and didn't get remotely close with it, then he just got used as a piñata for 6m or so.

Forgot to mention they announced a new rule that you are not allowed to throw an open hand out horizontally to range find anymore. You know that thing Jon Jones does all the time then "accidentally" pokes the other guy in the eye a bunch.

Cormier was laughing his ass off announcing it.

DC was funny raving about that rule, he's pretty good value on co-comms. Hopefully he and Jones will meet again at some point (assuming Rumble doesn't snatch the LH belt).

The Ezekial choke during the prelims was pretty amazing to see.

This is right on the money. You look at his record with minimum knowledge of mma and would think he was a lucker. At the time however, during his run up until the Edgar fight he was the GOAT. I remember pre Edgar he was on about going up in weight again. Man alive. What a tit.

I think Randy Couture is in the same boat almost. Had he left after the James Toney fight it would be the perfect bow round the end of an excellent career.

Unfortunately he didn't and this happened.

Penn vs GSP 1
Penn vs Hughes 1+2
Penn vs Kenny Florian
Penn vs Sean Sherk

Penn vs Sherk

Penn vs Stevenson

Penn vs Florian

Penn vs Hughes 1 & 3 (he lost in their second bout)

Penn wanted to scrap anybody that was good. He even took on Lyoto Machida in a catch weight bout. He was 180-190lbs while Lyoto was at about 220lbs~ and put up a good fight but lost the decision. Ultimately though, BJ Penn will forever be known as the scrapper from Hawaii who was the first American born to win the Mundials(BJJ World Championships) with about 3-4yrs of training. Second person to hold a belt in two different weight classes (Lightweight & Welterweight) and pretty much the guy who was just down to scrap anyone.

Guy is a legend.

He's never really fought anyone shit either. You have to go as far back as his first fight, then after that it's killer after killer. That's unheard of in combat sports.

I know someone will say 'Lesnar did that'  but ppftttttt. Lesnar was a steroided up 300lb monster fighting guys he outweighed by 80lbs. People seem to forget he won the belt off a 47 year old light heavyweight.

I'm not sure that 'padded' is the best word there. Out of 8 opponents, 5 were MMA world champions, and 1 that wasn't was K1 champ. Though the issue about his size difference stands.

Tim Kennedy has retired. Mixed feelings - retiring with a comfortable win over the champ must be bittersweet, but Gastelum made him look bad. Apparently he's going to be an advocate for fighter rights now (and his military credentials may get him heard by the senate), so I might have to start liking him one day.

Tim Kennedy had his memorable moments in the cage (particularly whe he fought at Fort Bragg or Fort Benning) but i think its too much to fight and have a high end military career at the same even if alot of the training crossesover.

As for Brock in not a huge fan and he did beat up an old man for the belt but he fought tough guys right away, Mir as your debut in "the pros"? Fuck that! He lost, sure, but he mauled him next time.

Possibly correct, but Heath Herring and Randy Couture weren't exactly killers when he fought them, and he lost as often as he beat anyone decent.  I always feel Cain exposed him entirely.

In other news, Weidman is now being fed to Mousasi, talk about make or break for Chris.

I like Weidman vs Mousasi alot. Its huge for Chris because going from unbeaten champ to 0-3 would be a nightmare. Mousasi is on a roll and has been calling for a top 5 opponent. A big win here and he would be calling for a title shot.

He bulked up after rockhold but he's always been small for the weight class.

Weidman small for the weight??

He is huge at the weight. The rumour before this fight was announced was he was going upto Light heavy. He is legit 6ft2. Anderson Silva claims to be 6ft2 as well but in every face of Weidman always looked taller and more muscular. For years everyone has always said what a monster Weidman is making middle.

Definitely. Weidman is a monster, size-wise: taller than Silva and with an even longer reach, without looking skinny. Could be a real 205 contender when he's fighting well.

God knows where his head will be at in this fight though. I want him to rebound, but I'm a Mousasi guy at heart.

We need to see where Rockhold and Jacare are at too. Been too long.

Weidman is big for middleweight (I wasn't saying he isn't) but he dropped muscle mass for the rockhold fight and hasn't been the same since. He doesn't even cut to get to 185lbs more. He was better when he was more tanked out muscle wise. Was better for his wrestling game.
