Fair point. I guess it's easy to forget how shit MW has been in the past, especially if you only include UFC fights.

Disregarding the Silva and Rockhold fights, Weidman looked great against Belfort and Machida. However I've always been a bit cynical as I was one of those who thought he got his title shot a little too early - I think he beat Maia and Munoz and that's pretty much it.

Don't forget that we were in some real MW dark ages there. The Munoz fight was a title eliminator because he was considered legit before Weidman destroyed him. Maia had already (sort of) fought for the belt too.

Outside of the UFC, there's never been much good MW to speak of. Pride's MW division with Rampage/Arona/Hendo/Wandy was Light Heavy, really.

Pride's WW division (183lbs) had some great names (Silva, Royce, Rickson, Robbie Lawler, Mousasi, Lombard, Pele, Sakuraba), but none who would stand up next to a giant like Weidman. But in those days of fighting at more natural weights, Weidman would probably be a HW.

I must disagree with a few bits, I didn't think Weidman looked all that great against either. Belfort certainly had his moments and troubled Weidman early, while Machida took Chris all the way to a decision. Compare that to how Rockhold dismantled Machida and subbed him in round 2, seemingly effortlessly.

I also thought Rockhold was dominating Weidman in their fight, I've never heard anyone say they thought Chris was winning before his awful spin kick. I think Luke looked much bigger, and felt so comfortable in there with Chris that he was happy to cruise along until his moment came. I see Luke handling Chris quite easily if a rematch ever came up. I do like Weidman but Rockhold has quite a size and strength advantage IMO.

That was my memory of it at least. Just watched a dodgy version on youtube, definitely not as black and white as I remember but I'd definitely say Weidman took round one, it was a reasonably close fight overall until said spinning kick.

Clearly my memory isn't what it was, probably best to ignore me... :blah:

It's was 1-1 in rounds most likely and Weidman was winning round 3 to that point. Rockhold had done more damage, but that's not how MMA is scored. No idea why he threw the kick, he's not a kicker at all

I think you quoted the wrong thing. I honestly feel Rockhold has Weidmans number, no matter how many times they fight. He's just bigger and stronger with arguably more skill.

Cheers mate, if I'm honest rather see Rockhold and Jacare rematch.

I know that it's Angel again, but I honestly can't fathom how a human suggests that anyone subs Jacare (a legit contender for MMA's top grappler, and someone who has never been subbed in MMA) 'handily'...

Anyhow...

Weidman's a massive, strong guy. Could fight at LHW without trouble. Can certainly hang with Rockhold, and there's plenty to be learned by a rematch.

In his entire career, Weidman has looked in actual jeopardy for about 5 minutes. People just have short memories and forget that any man can lose on one night, but not many can win as regularly as him.

He's a bit of a 'USA! USA!' bell, but there's no logical reason why he isn't still a devastating force.

Though this is 2016 and Bisping is atop a MW division that is an absolute shark tank, so logic doesn't necessarily apply.

Weidman came in too light against Rockhold. He could easily (possibly should be) a light heavy but for the rockhold fight he came in with noticeably less muscle mass - I assume he was thinking he needed speed over power.

Weidman vs Yoel Romero

Rockhold vs Mousasi / Vitor

Jacare vs bisping/ Hendo

Chael Sonnen is also coming back which will be brill. Plus Anderson Silva is still active - I wouldn't mind seeing Anderson rematch Vitor tbh.

please, I thought we were over this, do stop with the insults, or don't debate. It doesn't help anyone being rude.

I did not write off Jacare in any form, I just think Rockhold is that good, is bigger and stronger than him also, and will sub him if they fight.

Oh, Angel...

I think 'debating' is the bit where I mentioned that Jacare is the most aggressively dangerous grappler in the game today. Except maybe cheaty Palhares. Or where he's never been subbed. Or where he's a multi-time ADCC and BJJ world champ.

...and you responded with a fart sound and a stare into the middle distance. Again.

Sonnen is returning?

Shane Carwin is now officially out of retirement as well but will presumably be fighting in Bellator.

Pretty surprised that UFC didn't snap up Carwin. He's a good ol' likeable, hardworking American with a freight train for a fist.

He's very marketable, even for one or two fights. Maybe he just can't pass a medical because of his back issues. Or maybe they learned that he's about five inches shorter than they thought...

If he picks up a few wins Im sure they would give him a call.

My worry is he is 41 and if he comes back looking like he used too theres noway he is going to beat this USADA testing.

I really like Punk, he's so down to earth even in the face of such scrutiny and criticism. Nate Diaz said he really liked him, I'm enjoying seeing his house in the embeddeds (love his home gym and hot tub), I hope it's at least competitive...even better if he wins.

I really like Punk too, seems a nice bloke.

What I really dislike is all the fighters (like Overeem) saying to Micky Gall 'send that man back crying'. Punk has been nothing but respectful since coming in, I get he's come in via WWE and not paid his dues in the way the rest have, but don't like the way the people are willing him to lose like this.

I hope he wins and shuts them all up.

He seems to have been putting in the work. He's no James Toney, that's for sure, but the 'MMA vs pro wrestling' rivalry is good for both sides. It would've been cool if they'd used footage of various successful pro wrestlers in MMA, like Barnett, Saku, Ogawa, Takayama etc to help sell Punk's credibility.

My main problem with Punk is that he dumps on WWE at any opportunity, when he wouldn't have the chance to live out this little adventure without the cash and notoriety they gave him.

That said I'll still be watching, so he's earned his money already. I'd be equally happy to see an upset, or Gall to maul him a bit and make a new star.

I'll also be watching to see Overeem fulfill his destiny. He's the worst guy ever, but I've been watching him for the best part of two decades and I like him for some reason.

Anyone get 204 tickets? It seems they all went in the presales as they were listing as sold out less than a minute into today's public sale :(

Overeem is a complete twat. Maybe one of the biggest in the UFC. He recently started saying how Fedor wasn't the heavyweight GOAT and it would be more fitting for someone like him... er... no. Fedor went 32-0 against the best competition in the world at the time.

I like him too, I think it's because he is arrogance personified but makes no attempt to hide it.

Also any excuse to post this again because it cracks me up so very much. That little sniff. GOLD.

There's so much amazingness about Overeem. Whether he's transforming from spindly kickboxer to a horsemeat colossus via steroids, ducking fights while accusing others of ducking fights, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, or filling ambulances with dutch bouncers.

I'd probably watch a made for TV movie about his life.
