I don't think they really wanted Werdum either though, hence giving Cain a rematch initially despite him being smashed for 20 minutes (ignoring altitude issues entirely of his own making).

Personally I think Stipe/Overeem would be a great fight.

At the time they didn't want Werdum to be champion as Zuffa was breaking into Mexico, so having Cain as champion was a huge plus however, we know how well that worked out. Werdum has the Brazilian market, and besides from RDA something somewhat important to the Brazilian market, especially in the current climate there as well.

Fell asleep and woke up to hear Stipe being called new champ. Wow, I mean, Werdum has shown such versatility in striking, and with his BJJ I really didn't expect that.

Fuck a rematch, too many fucking rematches, let Cain get through Brown, maybe he'll have to fight another, get him against Stipe. Try telling me that isn't the most exciting fight in the heavyweight division at the moment.

Anyone catch Matt Brown punching that guy on the way out! Proper caught him.

Anyway, feel sorry for Brown. Damian Maia is a spectacle to watch, but it was so frustrating watching him trying to get a choke in for 3 rounds. Brown defended well, held him off until he got him. Props to Maia for persistence.

Think Maia saw it, he had no intention of standing up to Brown!

Appreciate Maia's skill, and it's up to his opponents to counter his ability to submit, but as a match it was frustrating. Like watching a boa constrictor kill its prey. Guess it'd much more engaging if you've practiced similar martial arts to get a sense for the physicality involved for both fighters. Impressively gritty, but prefer a bit more variety. Sure that's a stock whinge for such matches though, so apologies.

Werdum could learn a few things from Maia - don't fall in love with your hands when you're one of the best grapplers on the planet, especially at HW. It's a long way from the time he was inviting Overeem into his guard.

I would like to see Stipe/Overeem next - it's a fight we haven't seen before and then the winner can fight (presumably) Cain. If Cain does get injured, I reckon JDS needs a win or two to rematch Stipe for the belt. HW is very light though - on the UFC's official page, they still have fighters like Schaub, Mitrione and Jordan listed who are all gone a while.

Also - is there any chance of Maia getting a title shot next? I would be happy to see him fight Lawler, but the UFC wouldn't want to risk seeing a champ get neutralised like that. I don't necessarily think that it would go that way but there is a risk of it. Something like Maia/Condit would be brilliant too. I don't think they would let Maia get anywhere near Wonderboy for the moment either.

Maia is just a motherfucker on the ground.

This man literally sucks the fighting spirit out of his opponents, grinds them out and finishes.

It's just incredible to watch how he shuts these guys down.

Maia was utter poetry in motion. He's a privilege to watch for me at the moment. I think his streak is more durable than Thompson's, so definitely give Wonderboy the next shot if he beats Rory.

Woodley suddenly looks a less convincing challenger though.

Congrats to Stipe - he's American and humble. A firefighter too. He's perfectly marketable for their home territory if they do it right.

He's a very consistent fighter, though not my personal favourite due to being a boxer with good tdd.

I wish they'd squeezed a title shot in quickly for Bisping, as this is as close as he'll ever get. Jacare’s deservedly next, and a monster.

Sucking the life out of them is a good way of describing it. Matt Brown is a decent level of fighter and he wasn't able to offer anything during the match except trying to prevent the eventual choke. Must be incredibly draining running into a wall like that. Don't get me wrong, while it isn't my favourite of the event, can't fault Maia for playing to his strengths. Whoever he faces next best have some incredible takedown defence at their disposal.

Maia deserves the next shot. Unless I missed something I don't understand why Woodley is next; his most memorable moment so far is getting KO'd in highlight reel fashion by Nate Marquardt and beating Gastelum  ???

Someone obviously likes him at the UFC.

I think Wonderboy deserves it more than either of them and is higher in the UFC rankings than both of them.

Decent card last night. Werdum was just way of par, he did'nt look in great shape and fought like an idiot.

He was more interested in printing out those 40,000 masks than winning the fight. World class BJJ specialist literally runs swinging at a striker with his chin in the air, great gameplanning.

Woodley seems to think that because Hendricks missed weight against him it counts as a win. Twat.

I don't mind Woodley but he doesn't seem to have that spark of a champion to me, its all very workmanlike. We saw how Hendrix looks post USADA too, Wonderboy took him apart. WB versus Mcdonald is a very odd decision, derail one of your stars. I'd have fed Woodley to WB personally.

another main event ruined by injury, such a shame.

don't think Uriah hall done much to deserve a title shot, if Jacare can turn around that quickly he has to be first in line.

Bisping probably deserves another shot for hanging around at the top level for so long (and only ever really losing to TRT/roid monsters) - but I don't really want to see him get smashed by Rockhold again, who I think beats him comfortably.

I think Uriah would get minced by Rockhold. As would anyone not named Jacare. If he can turn it around, he definitely deserves it. He took no damage in his last fight.

However, this may be the way the stars align for Bisping's fairytale shot, without him upsetting the natural order of more deserving contenders. He's always in good shape, and has already thrown his hat in the ring via Twitter. Not that I see the fight going any differently from the last one.

I think Bisping could train til xmas and it wouldn't make a difference to the outcome - I think if anything it may help him as the last minute switch for Rockhold, and maybe him underestimating a man he's already beaten could be a factor (but I doubt it very much)

Dana announced this on twitter now, Jacare has had knee surgery so wasn't available,

Bisping easily beat Sonnen for me, but Sonnen is not in the same league as ULTRA ROCKHOLD. This man has better tools than Bisping in every department, and should handily murder him.

But if, through some kind of sorcery, Bisping gets something, it'd be an incredible way to close out a career.

We know how it'll go, but I'll be watching live just in case a miracle happens.

Yeah - outworking him is the only way. Volume over 5 rounds.

He easily outworked Silva, but largely down to Silva forgetting that it was a factor. He's hardly a decision fighter.

Also lightning strike or freak knee injury when Luke throws a dynamic kick.

He knocked Silva on his arse with a left hook in the 2nd round of that fight, if anyone thinks it was all "little jabs".

For Bisping to win he needs Rockhold to come in way over confident and not taking him seriously. Hopefully carrying at least one minor injury as well. A 100% fit and focused Rockhold with his size and skill is a nightmare for any UFC middleweight. Happy for Bisping as he deserves this and I will be cheering him on. This would be a huge upset though.

My pal Lanchana is fighting again tonight on tuf, frustrating not knowing the result. I'll be watching through my fingers seeing as she's not allowed to spill the beans.

Great fight, would happily see the two of them face off again. Harper is a little dynamo, got loads of heart.
