He was still knocked senseless, with a bit more time he'll likely be more gracious, or at least accept the result more willingly. Can't be easy though having been goaded for months, and then to get starched so quickly.

He can tell himself it was a fluke but he left himself wide open against a guy renowned for having a sledgehammer left. For such a great fighter it was a mistake, and the kind that makes the difference at elite level.

Been a brilliant couple of PPVs, and some great momentum heading in to 2016.

Awesome weekend of fights. McGregor was insane, Aldo was a beaten man before the fight started. I watched the documentary 'Tyson' this week, he says he knew he would win a fight of his opponent blinked or hesitated for a second during the introductions. Aldo couldn't even look at Conor.

So pleased for Rockhold too. Fight shouldn't have gone to the 4th though, that was a dangerous call from Herb.

The MW division is in trouble if Jacare and Romero are the next challengers given their showing last night.

Aldo always does that. He doesent look at his opponent during the ring introductions or ref instructions. Its not a sign of weakness, lots of fighters do it including Jon Jones.

Oh really? Consider me told then. I'll have to pull up some fights on Fight Pass and check.

For me Aldo's has always the calm before the storm approach, he's always been reserved and controlled, however, he seems like a really funny guy too from his interviews. Only a few fighter who actually championed an union for fighters too, and was against Reebok.

The division is as healthy and exciting as it's ever been. Sure, Romero needs some stamina, but Jacare managed to control an Olympic wrestler despite eating a flush shot that would have finished a lesser man. That spinning backfist was a KO shot, and Souza handled it very well.

Apparently Aldo's translator for the post fight interview did not do a good job of it, Aldo was humble in defeat and admitted Conor won and said he will be back, the translator added the 'this was not a fight' part. Joe Rogan apologised to Aldo on twitter:

https://twitter.com/joerogan/status/676076254387302400

The guy Rogan is quoting has done a full translation

http://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1so1atm

Rogan: How much, if any, of the fight can you remember?

Aldo: He threw a straight to my chest, I expected that. When I went for him, he hit a good straight (shrugs) that got me, but I believe this fight... I think now we should go for a rematch, I think it doesn't end like this - (cleans blood) - it happened too fast, he hit me with a good punch and got the finish.

Rogan: How much of all of his taunting affect you?

Aldo: It didn't affect me at all. Doesn't matter what he had said, I never let this things get to me, I keep my cool inside the octagon. I want to come and just do my job. He was the better man tonight, hit me with a good punch, now I think we should go for the rematch. I'm waiting for it. Hopefully on the next fight I'll train a lot more and get back what is mine.

Aldo: Thank you everybody from Brazil, thank you for cheering for me. This is part of the sport, we lost today, but we lost the battle, not the war. Hopefully we'll come back stronger and do it for you guys. Thank you all, God bless you all.

That was the first card in ages that I've enjoyed more than a couple of fights on. Conor was great - I love the philosophy of good technique above all and it's amazing to see such precision and timing. Fight of the night was Maia/Nelson for me. An absolute masterclass in grappling, and Maia wasn't holding back on the strikes either. Gunnar is one tough cookie. Rockhold fight was excellent too.

And from above:

Aldo-down.gif

It really is a thing of beauty, just masterful striking. Watching Aldo's feet I believe his right was a feint to set up the left hook - he steps his left foot outside of McGregor's stance and transfers his weight to it. Conor reacts to the feint and lands that perfect straight left.

And if you haven't watched Jack Slack's breakdown of McGregor's striking you really should.

I still like Weidman.

I didn't want to admit to myself Rockhold would win. His striking is on another level, it looks so refined, combined with the reach advantage, getting those body kicks in.

Weidman landed some good body kicks himself; shame to see him lose, tough dude.

Also, he was intelligently defending himself. I think he was right to let him see the end of the round.

Weidman's dad, so embarrassing. 'He's still got his fans' Lol. No he doesn't.

Hands turtled over the face isn't intelligent defence. He ate so, so many actual shots, as his face opening up attests. I have no idea if Herb looks to Dana in those situations, but he doesn't call the fight when he should.

I know Herb isn't technically employed by the UFC, but there are occasions when champs are given longer than they should to recover. It doesn't seem a coincidence, and there should probably be an investigation to see if they're prioritising entertainment over fighter health.

Weidman's Dad was hilarious though. "My mum still says I'm the handsomest boy in school!"

Anyway, now that he's taken a beating, I can get on the Weidman train next time around. Assuming he shows a bit of humulity and desire.

Yeah there's countless examples where the champs or even just a big name fighter get longer then the lesser names when they're being pummelled. It's ridiculous and plain dangerous. Weidman's downfall was that spin kick, which was very un-Weidman like. Prior to that it was delicately poised.

the crazy thing is that rockhold had cellulitis 2 weeks before, he said so in the presser. he called it staph in a few others just for ease of communicating, but he confirmed it was cellulitis. now ive had this, 3 times, and its no picnic, it took a week solid of antibios before i could even be out of bed for any length of time...my leg was purple and huge, and as he said, it tears up your whole body because every part of you is fighting the infection, you cant move and you have to keep your leg elevated upwards else your blood doesnt flow.

he beat weidman 2 weeks after that. 2 weeks after mine i had just barely returned to work. its being glossed over, but what rockhold did was a miracle, he beat the anderson silva killer with about 2 rounds of cardio in him, tops. my hat is off to him because i know exactly what hes been through.

Up until that kick I really thought Weidman would eventually turn the table, Rockhold was visibly wincing from the kicks to the left side and had slowed down considerably from the first couple of rounds. He admitted later that he had gassed at that point due to the infection and all.

it really does make it incredible, when i heard him say cellulitis i couldnt believe it (after having to explain it to so many people and my work), its being so overlooked but its key to the whole fight, its an amazing achivement.

dont forget cowboy vs frankanjos next week and JDS overeem

Ah cheers, didn't realise that was next week. What a time!

Rockhold should have won performance of the night honours for what he did. After reading your post, had a bit more of a read on cellulitis and genuinely staggered. More ammo next time someone says 'them MMA fighters just roll around hugging each other'.

I have been thinking, if Ronda 'deserves' an immediate rematch with Holly after losing equally as humiliating as Aldo just did, how on earth would the UFC get out of not giving Aldo an immediate rematch after 10 years reign and being p4p best fighter on the roaster?

yeah youre right but ronda is marketing gold, aldo doesnt even speak english, theres long been a feeling that the company have been marketing aldo grudgingly and waiting for him to lose. he doesnt play the media game, he speaks out against sponsors and policies. white has said if conor moves up, the fight is frankie v aldo, if not...white will probably say frankie cant be denied, which is fair enough.

tbh i hate immediate rematches, why not just do immediate trilogies? its daft
