ah Jacare/Mousasi and Hunt/Roy Nelson will be fun but that's like two fights from 60 or so. That seems pretty bad to me.

I can't believe they are asking people to pay for 177, numbers should be interesting on this one.

Just had a look. Holy shit. Not even fight night calibre that.

Thanks for the TJ Grant info, i hope he comes back soon.

As for UFC177, take the title fight out and its uninspiring to be kind, who knows, maybe it will be fantastic? There's as much chance of that as of it being shit, its a good opportunity to for guys to get some quality screen time after all.

So excited for this weekend's main.

I stopped caring about the cards entirely and just started looking to the main events. Can't believe Belfort and Weidman is in December. That blows.

I just checked the events though and

MacDonald vs. Saffiedine

is on for October 5th. That'll be a good fight. Saffiedine is a fucking brute - his standup technique is sterling. If anyone missed Fight Night Singapore I implore you to obtain it.

I've got a feeling MacDonald will nullify the standup and win a boring decision. Hope I'm wrong though!

Barao apparently passed out earlier and the fight's off, Soto in at short notice!

@ChuckMindenhall: Joe Soto now in PPV main event title shot on 24 hours notice against Dillashaw.

http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2014/8/29/6084541/renan-barao-out-of-ufc-177-joe-soto-to-fight-t-j-dillashaw-for

Multiple sources on Twitter are stating that Renan Barao is out of tomorrow night's UFC 177 rematch with T.J. Dillashaw. Some reports indicate that there was an issue with his weight cut and the former UFC bantamweight champion passed out, leading to his removal from the card.

At just over 24 hours from the start of the card it is unlikely that the event will be scrapped altogether, but this does leave it in the situation where it may be even more of a financial disaster.

The co-main event for the show was Tony Ferguson against Danny Castillo in an interesting bout, but certainly not one that anyone is ready to shell out $60 to watch.

*BREAKING UPDATE*

As I'm typing this, the report is that Joe Soto will step in and fight for the UFC bantamweight title. Soto has never fought in the UFC, but is on a six fight win streak. He was the only other male bantamweight on the card (other than his original opponent of Anthony Birchak) so he should be on weight and able to keep a title fight on the card.

They need to start having tighter rules on weight cutting. You get guys going in 20lbs and above heavier than they were at the weigh ins. I think same day weigh ins. I know at first it'll suck but eventually you will get more people fighting in...er... the weight class they are supposed to be in.

Main card UFC 177

T.J. Dillashaw © vs. Joe Soto [a]
Tony Ferguson vs. Danny Castillo
Bethe Correia vs. Shayna Baszler
Ramsey Nijem vs. Carlos Diego Ferreira
Yancy Medeiros vs. Damon Jackson

Thats got to be the worst UFC PPV line up I have ever seen. I think they would have cancelled this event if they hadn't just canned 176 as well. They really should have cancelled the Sept 5 Fight Night and put these fights on UFC 177.

Jacaré Souza vs. Gegard Mousasi
Alistair Overeem vs. Ben Rothwell
Joe Lauzon vs. Michael Chiesa

Matt Mitrione vs. Derrick Lewis

It still would'nt be amazing but it would at least look abit more like a UFC PPV.

There could be some sick fights, still.

Fuck Barao, don't these fighters have enough time? I mean shit, this is truly gutting, yet another fight called off. The UFC is in a fucking dire state at the minute, seriously, with the ongoing PED allegations and now ANOTHER main event with the top athletes of their division off the cards - and Dana White it getting no shit from anyone.

Fuck sake, man. How can Renan and his team fuck it up this badly? Maybe he will move to Welter now? The weight cutting issue needs to be looked at somehow, i dont know how but it needs changed, its getting out of hand with guys cutting 30 - 40lbs (I'm looking at you Hendricks amongst others) then adding on 10lbs+ over night which skews the divisions. Perhaps the best idea would be more weight classes? Theres too big a gap between LW and WW, why not make a 163lb, a 178lb and a 195lb or something.

I know nothing about Soto, but who knows what will happen now as long as its a legit title match, then its fine with me.

Yeah its a joke PPV in terms of names, before Barao went out but the biggest hyped fights can be the most awful, when we expect nothing it can sometimes be even better.

not a disastrous card in terms of entertainment (I've seen worse) but suffering from the fact that other than TJ Dillashaw I'd never heard of anybody on it

bearing in mind how it came about not a terrible main event, must have been really hard for TJ losing Barao so late on and Soto didn't disgrace himself at all (far from it he put up a spirited effort)

The UFC ppv buy rates have been in some serious decline for a while. They are sabotaging themselves from within, spreading a small roster across far too many events.

They also held back some decent fights off the PPV yesterday to air them on free tv up against Bellator on Friday.

I dunno. Some of the divisions are pretty thin, you'd end up with the same few guys fighting each other for the belt all the time (pretty much like Velasquez & JDS fighting 3 times in the space of a couple of years).

I was away from Friday and had a properly bizarre moment when I sat down to watch the PPV and it appeared Barao had suddenly developed the skills to speak perfect English. Also he had changed his name to Joe Soto.

Catching up on the Barao stuff now and I have absolutely no idea what to think. I was really pleased Soto put up a good fight, I don't dislike TJ but we have seen some last minute fights recently-ish end up as glorified processions (Latifi, Cummins).

Seems daft. He's probably somewhat sleazy but 8th in sports? lol

So we'll just ignore war machine, your john terry types, all those american footballers who get caught up in gang rapes, it's just stupid and dana should ignore it.

Plus dana brought tito back!... tito ffs. Plus he tried to get fedor to the ufc and had to deal with those idiotic m-1 twats.

To take from the boxing model, the best solution may be for the athletic commissions to do regular weight checks at set intervals in the build up to a fight meaning they have to be within a certain percentage of the contracted weight at those times. Adding in a maximum "on the night" weight could also be introduced.

Yeah, i suppose more at the lighter weights, between LW to MW, where theres loads of fighters. I was just thinking at the weekend how little HW action theres been lately with any serious contenders, how long since Velasquez or JDS fought? A year? There seems to be smaller weight fights all the time but not too many LHW or HW, maybe its hard to get decent guys that are bigger.

Dana's bouts of homophobia, sexism, and lack of regard for individual fighters mean more because he represents an entire sport. He's an idiot who constantly contradicts himself, bears personal grudges publically, and is a terrible face for MMA.

He belongs on the list because of his status in the sport, for sure. He makes it too easy for the mainstream to criticise the sport, and harm its acceptance. I have trouble imagining how anyone outside of 'Just Bleed', boneheaded Affliction-wearers could think he's anything other than a bad figurehead. People talk about how far DFW brought the sport. Imagine how much further it could go without him?

Anyway - just had a look at the 177 8 card. It's really good! It's also mostly smaller guys, but I hope it sells well, as it's stacked and likely to be packed with action. Johnson, Cerrone, Alvarez, Poirier, McGregor, Cruz and Masvidal? Yes please.

Yeah but then again look at Scudamore, Ecclestone etc. Not exactly angels. Not that I'm sticking up for White, he is a bit of a dick.

Anyway - guessing you mean 178, 177 was ... light, shall we say. But yeah I said on the last page I reckon 178 will be PPV of the year, it looks awesome. Cruz is on the prelims FFS!

Fun Friday ahead:

Jacare/Mousasi - don't know who to favour this time: Mousasi can't be stopped, but Jacare's vicious now. Jacare was very competitive last time up until the upkick.

Overeem/Rothwell - I've decided that I don't want to see an Overeem who isn't wrecking fools. So if he loses here, let's seem him head off to WSOF or Japan and crush some cans. It'll be interesting to see him at his lighter weight, but he really should murder Rothwell.

Curran/Pitbull 2

King Mo vs some guy

Bobby Lashley vs some guy

Lavar Johnson vs Cheick Kongo - I wouldn't have cared for this in the UFC, but suddenly I find it interesting in Bellator. Odd.
