It's been a shit week for MMA PR - brawl, Grispi & War Machine domestic abuse, and the continuous doping problem highlighted by Chael's on/off match at Metamoris (NSAC threatening to fine him heavily if he competed in the match with Galvao - which thankfully he did).

If Matt Hughes, Rogan, Schaub and a heap of others are condemning it as bad for the sport, it's probably quite bad in terms of perception.

On the other hand, it may well sell a few extra PPVs for this event but may set them back in the long term (getting sanctioned in NY, mainstream acceptance etc.).

I'd say the domestic abuse is way worse for public perception than the DC/Jones thing, the NFL is in the same boat with Ray Rice breaking his wifes jaw and only getting a 2 game ban, which is awful, he should have been done for at least half the year, at least War Machine got fired. But Sonnens doping saga is just getting ridiculous now, which is affecting fans perception which is worse than what a people who dont care about MMA think. According to Rogans podcast, the NY sanctioning is due to the culinary union and the Fertitas casino company being non-union, and this other stuff has little bearing on MMA in NY, though i'm sure that would never be admitted by anyone publicly. As for mainstream acceptance, its not got much more room to grow, well in the US anyway, over here theres plenty room to grow yet i suppose, when Bisping was on Radio 5 awhile ago, some of it was really good but some peoples attitude was the old human cockfighting guff. Personally, i like it being a relatively niche sport, i'm not against it being more popular or anything like that but I like being into a sport that not everyone is and not something "trendy" or endorsed by some knob celebrity.

Disgusting.

Dog the Bounty Hunter has offered to capture him. Hoping those rednecks give him a good beating when they find him.

Guy needs to be put away for life now.

I'm not so sure he's guilty, apparantly she was cheating with some guy who attacked him when he caught them. Her pics don't match her injuries and her story's full of holes

Such a huge disappointment. The amount of injuries in the UFC is really starting to get to me, especially over the last month or so. Velasquez is out, Gustaffson is out, Aldo is out, now Jones. It's beyond a joke. I'd be almost ready to fuck UFC off for a bit if it wasn't for Barao and Dillashaw at the end of the month. Be nice to see Cung Le back in the cage too. But damned. Very disappointing.

Also, Gustaffson has announced his dismay at not being offered a fight as was on the back of his injury. Rightly so, eh?

The relationship was said to have been over for months. Sometimes it's not wrong to judge a man with form for being a violent, cretinous psychopath.

And even if she was cheating on him, who gives a shit? Plenty of MMA fans have been disgustingly acting as if that justifies any part of the story. I wonder if there's a guy in a cell waiting to post an awful rape tweet as soon as War Machine arrives?

Bad for the sport, bad for humanity. Get him gone from both.

I think giving barao an instant crack at TJ is pretty disrespectful too.

It's tricky territory. Barao had an incredible record, much better than Dillashaw, and arguably the best in his weight class. Sure, the first fight wasn't close, but it could still be spun as an "off night" for the guy who was previously a destroyer.

They're both probably just keeping the top spot warm for Crux anyway, if he returns anywhere near 100%. Dillashaw at least deserves that fight though, so I hope he gets it.

I don't think so. Barao had an amazing run and, more importantly, who else is there? Faber is unwilling to fight TJ unless he specifically asks for it, Cruz is just a ghost haunting the division (as much as I love him) and was never going to get an instant title shot ... I guess you could make a point for Assuncao given he already has a win over TJ but there is no way those two could headline a PPV yet.

On a related note, UFC 177 looks proper light now that DJ / Cariaso has moved to 178.

Yikes.

Yeah, i dont know, apparantly he is a total douche, he claims they were still engaged and so on. I hope they get to the bottom of it.

Im not a fan of instant rematches, they should earn their spot again. I really like TJ (liked on tuf, hes been on joe rogan a few times etc), and I really hope he dominates barao again.

You think cruz will come in and take over? I dont think he will at all, i dont think he can finish, and i think hes had too much time out of there...i think the standard has raised without him. I dont think he'd even beat faber now.

Fair points but i just think its a shame that it makes it look like theyre questioning the validity of TJ's win. Also if he wins again, where next for barao? I think they should have built him up again against some other guys, doing it this way risks completely destroying him as a draw.

Barao has the same problem as Dos Santos at heavy if he loses again, though it is a little easier for the smaller guys to move weight divisions I suspect.

I always think if a dominant or longstanding champ loses its their right to get an auto rematch if they want it. Not the case for somebody who has only held the belt for a short while.

War Machine is a prick, end of. The sort of fighter that makes non-fans think MMA is full of violent assholes.

Shame Paul Daley had the visa issue as I was really looking forward to him switching out the lights via left hook! No angel is Semtex but compared to WM he is!

Yeah I am looking forward to TJ/Barao again. The first fight was amazing, in fact the whole thing is like Silva/Weidman except 50lbs lighter.

me too, first fight was awesome and was so comprehensive that I'm intrigued to see what Barao can do to rectify things, he got pasted totally for a long period of time, nothing flukey about it.

I agree on Cruz..

Barao absolutely deserves a rematch, theres not many other contenders other than Faber just now anyway.

As for Cruz, yeah he's good but i cant see him dominating at all, far too long out and its really moved on, everyone moves like he does/did plus his injuries will have had some effect on his footwork perhaps to, but he's never been a real big puncher to make up for it

Definition of a one fight card. And even that fight nobody really wants to see.

No way man. If Barao and Dillashaw isn't the fight of the year something truly spectacular has to occur; the most impressive performance we've seen in a long time, against one of the most impressive and dominant champions in the UFC.

Still can't believe the rematch is at the end of the month - it feels like Christmas has come twice.
