Awwww for fuck's sake, Cruz is injured and out of UFC169. Barao is now the official champ and it's him vs Faber next month.

Still looking forward to the event as it's totally stacked but I do feel bad for Cruz. Wonder how much longer he'll be out for, although it's a groin thing rather than the knee again so hopefully soon.

That's a shame. I know nothing of Cruz, really.

Urijah Faber's such a weird dude, in where he stands in MMA. He's like one of those household names that kind of floats in a league of his own. Be a good fight still

I'm not a huge Silva fan but I would certainly rather watch him than Weidman, which puts me in the same boat as most paying fans - though the Belfort fight should draw some money.

You're not wrong about me longing for some of the old days, before wrestlebox dominated the sport and wall'n'stall became more important than a thai clinch, but it's certainly sad to see the fall of legends who built their reputation over years in multiple orgs. As athletes' testosterone levels naturally drop, it's often a case of watching them lose to someone who's simply younger, rather than more obviously 'better'.

I suppose I also don't like the fact that you can be a world champ in the sport with 10 pro fights under your belt. Or 3 if your name is Brock Lesnar. It take some of the cachet away.

Fair enough.

It might not be a bad thing for Cruz - who would want to face Barao after two years off? I had him written off for that fight anyway.

He can come back when he's fit, get a decent win or two, and would be a fair contender for a title shot. Obviously, it's terrible that he had to vacate the title but that should really have happened some time ago.

I don't really hold out much hope for Faber. Taking the fight on short notice probably isn't a bad move - if he wins, fantastic. If he loses, it's not too damaging and he could get another shot if someone manages to topple Barao this year. After the 2013 he's had, I hope Faber does it.

Yeah he is a strange one. There are barely any standout popular fighters (to the casual MMA observer) among the lower weight classes but he's somehow managed it without ever winning a title (in UFC anyway).

He's always a good go-to guy for a main event but unfortunately I can't see anything other than a a Barao win. To be honest, the same probably would have happened to Cruz but it still would have been an interesting fight.

He's a solid fighter, you know, really grounded game and you know what to expect, but it seems like the Brazilians bring so much flare (a word I ascribed to them when watching the in the world cup in 2008); they have this movement about them that seems to be hard to pin down, you see it in Aldo, Silva, and Barao.

Bad times for Cruz - I was keen to see which would win out of Cruz's pacey in-out game, and Barao's aggression. I'd have picked a prime Cruz, but I wouldn't have been sure either way. If he returns, give him 1 fight before the belt, I'd say.

I'm not one for saying that Faber shouldn't get repeated title shots, so good for him. He earns them time and time again - the best contender should never be eliminated from contention as punishment for prior success. I don't know what good 2 weeks' notice does for him though. Wouldn't mind seeing him head up to meet Edgar if he fails here and revisits 145.

Seriously? he's been sitting on that belt forever and hasn't fought since the end of 2011.

Any other division and he'd have been stripped years back.

Nah, I don't necessarily feel bad for him because of the belt-stripping, I agree it dragged on far too long. I just meant that I was looking forward to seeing him fight again and it must be pretty disheartening to come back from so many setbacks just to tear a muscle.

Yeah, true. He'll be back though I'm sure. Way worse stuff has happened to other fighters - recall one of the heavyweights getting shot twice, mir and the car accident, that incredibly tall guy who fought at lightweight and snapped his leg, lesnar, Franklin, and so on.

Ah, yeah I kind of forgot about that. Not many people seemed that bothered and UFC went into event meltdown at the end of last year, they were coming a bit thick and fast. Who was the 2013 champeen in the end?

I would definitely be up for doing it again for this year ... what does everyone think about maybe just doing it for fights on the main card of each event, or maybe even just the top 3 or 4 billed fights? I found I was just blind guessing a lot of prelim fights last year because I had no idea who the guys were (especially on the international events). This way you get the added benefits of a) a warm feeling inside because it wasn't total guesswork and b) hopefully a more even league in terms of number of predictions made as we were all picking different numbers of fights on each card last year.

Rllmuk 2014 Pool: http://bit.ly/1dpuSwG

I continued playing the past few weeks, but it seems to have carried my score into the new pool. Also, I agree with Yobo's suggestion but I've already made my picks for the next event and it won't let me deselect any of them. Maybe for the next event, pick prelims as well. Then for all future ones - main card plus prelim headliner.

I feel pretty bad for Thomson - he seemed like it could have been a clear cut victory over Benson, which would have solidified him as a title contender. He just got very unlucky with the broken hand/thumb so early. Even despite this, he ragdolled Henderson like nobody I've ever seen at times.

On the other hand, he's publically a homophobe, so I don't mind so much. But a fight with Pettis, another diverse striker and aggressive BJJ grappler, would have been fireworks.

Agree about Miocic. He has cardio for a big guy, but that's it. The talent divide in the HW top 10 is so bizarre. You feel like any big guy with about a year's worth of dedicated training could get close to the rankings. Such a different, more simplistic skill set than the lighter weights.

Looks like either Mir or Overeem might get walking papers after next week's fight. Mir is usually a gimme for a decent HW these days, but I'm beginning to think that Overeem can lose to just about anyone.

Yeah it was rather underwhelming, not really much excitement bar that awesome Cerrone KO. Shame... like you say next week should make up for it though.

Loved the Bruce Leeroy Vs. Pettis fight. Although Pettis should drop to 125, he's too small / short for this division. Great to see 2 talented young prospects battle it out and show tremendous levels of heart in what was a real back and forth affair. Caceres is on a bit of a tear right now, I never thought he looked that great on TUF either.

Great to see Stephens continue to climb the featherweight division, fuck that dude has some power in his hands, him vs Mendes or Swanson would be a great fights.

Cerrone looked very good again, he just needs to be more consistent, from way back in the WEC days he looks like a word beater one fight and then quite lacklustre the next when fighting the best in the division. That's part of the parcel I guess.

Benson Henderson - fuck I detest the outcome of so many of his fights but hey, it's not him judging the fights. Who does he get next? Kabib? Gil rematch? He can't possibly get a title shot against Pettis anytime soon.

You're right, on paper The Reem should murder Mir but I just can't get behind it fully as he's been so underwhelming. Still the most likely outcome and one I'm hoping for in order to see Cigano fight him and put him out of the UFC once and for all. He should be fighting in Glory World Series in my opinion as he can't put an MMA game together, his fight IQ is too low as souch he's never going to beat top 5 in the UFC h/w division.

Benson Henderson has lost his last five fights for me and come away with four wins. Frankie Edgar beat him twice, Melendez beat him, Pettis subbed him and Thompson beat him

How much longer can this go on? MMA needs to change and adapt or its audience will grow disillusioned. Going to the judges is a complete lottery.

So true. He gets a beatdown then comes away with a win for... er... leg strikes and a few takedowns?

I thought he won all those fights, except the Pettis fight.

Pettis knew how to deal with him, come forward, kick the shit out of him and then crack his arm. I didn't see any controversy with the Thompson fight, pretty clear cut. Thompson probably would have won if he didn't break his hand.
