Photo Contest - August

Subject: Self Portraits

Closing Date: 8PM, 1st September 2008

The subject for this month's Rllmuk photo contest, as chosen by last months winner, mercenarri , is:

Self Portraits

"Okay, I've had a think and perhaps Self-Portraits will spark some interesting results. No real rules for this one, except perhaps that the picture should only consist of yourself and nobody else. And no Myspace angles."

The contest is open to anyone on the forum. Don't worry about your skillz - this is just for fun - but hopefully it will help people improve their photography, whatever level they're at. To aid this, feedback and constructive criticism are encouraged.

Rules

- Photographs must be taken by you - no nicking them off the Web

- Photos must be taken specifically for the contest - get out there and get snapping!

- One picture per person.

- No excessive digital manipulation (i.e. adding a more dramatic sky from another photo to your picture, or creating negative images etc.). Cropping, and adjusting levels, contrast, saturation etc. is ok though.

- Equipment: Anything goes as long as the results can be seen from here.

- Voting takes place when the contest closes.

- The winner of the contest gets to choose the next subject.

- The closing date for entries is 8pm on the last day of the month. I will, however, give leeway to any pictures that come between this time and when I begin the voting topic. Best not to chance it though.

Any suggestions on how to make this run better are welcome in the rules discussion topic.

NOTE: Please do not post pictures in this thread unless they are valid entries for the contest (see rules above). Thanks.

Ditto.

Lets not start. Like last time it's all about being creative. You still can get out and start snapping but you just have to think about how to include yourself in the shot in a creative way. Or do some lighting experimentation for example.

Portraits are a massive part of photography and it is just as hard to get an amazing picture in this field as it is in any.

LDA - I am not sure about that though. That might be pushing the boundries a little. Merc was quite adament that the pic must contain you and only you. You could take a picture of ANYTHING and claim it represented you.

Aye, you're right, I didn't read the brief other than the title really :)

Scary topic! Should make for some interesting results though, to see how people see themselves.

One technical problem I have, however, is that I just don't know how to do this. How do you setup a photo if the main subject isn't in the viewfinder when you do it (because you'd be behind it, obviously)? How do you go about doing the focus? Just guess? Take a bunch photos and adjust as you go along based on the results? I'll have to find out if there's any way I can take a shot other than the 10second timer single shot that I currently know how to do with my camera too. Haaaaaaaaaard.

Also, as for getting out and about, having the setting being somewhere that means something to you, or is symbolic in someway would be great. I would never actually take photos of myself in public though, it's hard enough doing it from the other side of the camera!

Mirror Mirror on the wall. Who's the fairest of them all?

Portraits are a massive part of photography, i agree.

However self-portraits do not inspire me really. It would have been lovely to focus on people, but to take photos of myself is just dull, not least of all because i can't actually look at what i'm photographing. Plus I don't actually want to take a photo of myself - i can't separate how vain and facebook it feels.

Self portraits don't have to be dull or traditional here's some inspiration from Lee Friedlander

I typed in "abstract self portrait" on flickr and came up with these, maybe not the greatest photos in the world but at least they're a bit different

I'm well taking it from a myspace angle, jacking up the contrast and desaturating, then adding some emo poetry. Yeah.

You sure know how to cut to the core of me.

I'm looking forward to this, though I'm still at the dwelling stages. Gonna be a while I think.

Ace. I'm working on a self portrait for work (we get set a comp each month, winner gets something like a weekend away in a swanky hotel). Anyway..... that is typography based but I've had some ideas on a photography theme too.
