yeah it looked better before, forget gradiants and bevelled edges, the colours in the first version were nicer are well.
Paper Mario does have gradients.
It has strong constant thick black outlines around the edge though, and more controlled slices on the inner.
I think to really change the style like this it's best to not be afriad of playing around with the figure. Change the eyes, simplify the contents, change the scale and proportions.
How much of this stuff will you see at HD res?
Won't this be an automatic fail once it comes to peer review? The XNA forum guys under direction from MS have been very explicit when it comes to IP infringement. If you don't own it/have permission, don't use it. That goes for mundane properties such as fonts as well as character models, sounds, images, etc.
Really don't wanna piss on any bonfires here but it'd be a shame to spend time on this, just for it to never be allowed onto the Community Games service. Maybe ask on the Creators Club forums?
What's the details of the sprites on screen? Does it use actual sprites, or a texture on a poly. I think if you're hitting a HD res you should be able to get in some nice surface detail on the textures.
The Fuzzy felt should look nice and distinctive, it's got that soft fabric material, and the 3D depth of the layers as the sprite is built up. Not sure how the lighting would be handled on such a thing. I suppose a fixed direction for everything. If the sprites are flipped to create left and right movement, you'll get an odd two directions of light issue.
its not the gradients that are the problem, its the garish colours.
Playable Win32 version (old sprites)
Nah, the colours are fine.
You can't have bubble bobble without Garish.
make a version that looks like LBP.
What it is, is I really want to retain the original nature of the eighties game. No updated backgrounds or fancy new game modes - Bubble Bobble 1986 in HD.
Currently, the illustrator version look like a dodgy flash game seen on newgrounds. Obviously you haven't put a lot of time into them but you really should go for a flatter look and less use of the gradient tool.
Something more like this maybe?
I like the 3D version above though! How did you do the lighting?
This just made me do a sad face
