Free Microsoft Points

Yeah I got 500 points as well. I also paid full whack for Puzzle Quest earlier in the year.

I did buy a new 12 month LIVE sub yesterday. I kind of assumed it was something that I got free with that. I did get 500 points with my copy of GTA but I spent that almost straight away. [kate bush]It's a mystery![\kate bush]

Do you mean Toyah?

No points for me either, could do with it to take my current 700 points to 1200, which would come in handy over the next few weeks!

Anything to do with the refund of points for the muppets.... er I mean misguided people who bought gamer pics?

I like this theory.

I've never spent on pics or owt, and not got any points.

Is there anyone here that has never spent any amount on pics et al and got the free points?

They're saying this on GAF -

It isn't everyday you see the words "Microsoft" and "gift" in the same sentence. But here goes; Microsoft appears to be handing out a gift of 500 MS Points to various Xbox Live users.

There is, however, a catch. Nobody seems to know why they've received free points and we're assuming this is just some sort of hiccup.

Nonetheless, we recommend you check your Xbox Live account via your console or Xbox.com, as there could be an extra 500 MS Points ready and waiting.

The free points were originally thought to be compensation for those who had pre-ordered Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto IV. The title was sold with a special offer that granted all pre-ordering customers 500 free MS points. Unfortunately, most users weren't aware that those free points had an expiry date and it was believed that Microsoft was merely refunding those customers who felt short-changed.

However, it has now been confirmed that many of the free-point recipients didn't pre-order GTA IV, and many have never played the game.

To further add to the confusion, various Xbox Live subscribers have also reported that MS Points are being deducted from their accounts without warning - often including points they'd actually paid for.

I've spent the 500 points, so if they now decide to take 500 points that I've legitimately bought away from me, I'll go snooker loopy. Generosity or major cock-up?

Is it perhaps to do with the LIVE is 5 promotion from a few months ago where people who had LIVe subs since the early days were promised 500 free points. I got the free points and I spent my GTA points too, but I remember signing up for the LIVE 5 thing and never hearing anything about it again.

I didn't sign up for that though. Nor have I been a member since the beginning. It's all so inconsistent.

I did get the 500 points with GTA, bought from gamestation)

I spent them all on Rock Band tracks (at the time, they were the only points on my system) since then I've bought 2500 points through usual channels.

Over the weekend they gave me 500 points and the message - odd.
