Infamous by Sucker Punch

Brad Shoemaker (giantbomb) said his first impressions were really good. I like his first impressions because he doesn't get sucked into hype like most American people did. Actually I'd say he was more cynical than most people. In the world. But reassuring. (what he said.)

I am tired.

"Karma" moments - I'm not sure I like the idea of these...

Just from reading that snippet, I doubt that there'll be any real choices to make. Just like every other game that claims to have choices that impact on the world/story/whatever, it's generally all fluff.

Be nice to have a game that does have real choices, though; the last one I can think of that did was Streets of L.A. - that had choices with branching storylines. Good fun, too.

When's this meant to be out, anyway?

Prototype is the end of June.

Nice to see they moved it forward, to move it away from Prototype or because they've done such a great job there's little to do? Bit of both?

Sucker Punch are pretty awesome, though (certainly miles better than Radical Entertainment), I have faith in the new release date.

Thank god for the move! There's almost nothing on the PS3 in the next few months, moving this to May makes it a buy for me, even though it's probably only a shift of a few days. Once you're in to June, there's a few other big games looking for your money, but in May not so much. I wouldn't count out Radical, because they can make a fun game and Prototype looks like more of a laugh to play than Infamous to be honest, but I think the move is clever and will certainly get me picking it up whereas before I might have been more on the fence.

This doesn't look very good.

The cutscenes in that Karma vid are terrible - the animation is about 10 years out of date (see 1:29 for an example)

And it looks like yet another 3rd person shooter, but with the guns replaced with lightening bolts.

Meh, it might turn out great but I don't have very high hopes

Prototype looks like it's got a lot more going for it.

There's a new trailer out (SD, HD) and I think it looks very nice. Oh, it's confirmed for a European release on May 29th, too.

It's hard for me to describe why exactly, but I'm looking forward to this whilst Prototype does absolutely nothing for me despite the games' ostensible similarity. I think it's partly because in inFAMOUS you're more Spider-Man than Superman and I find being untouchable rather boring; if you can fly around a city and throw tanks at everyone where's the sense of achievement?

You've never played Hulk: Ultimate Destruction or Crackdown, have you?

I'm surprised at how small this thread is btw, there seems to be a general apathy towards this throughout teh internets. Unless the game itself turns out to be really amazing which leads to word of mouth to drive the sales, this has flop written all over it.

Personally, I think prototype looks far more promising from just the vids, and inFamous doesn't look nowhere near as good or as fun as Spider-Man 2 imho.

Agreed, I find both are a little lacking in character but Prototype seems to have more gamey goodness to it than this for some reason. This.. well... Its direction just doesn't strike me as a visual approach that resonates with anyone anymore these days.

I'm not sure why people are so up on Prototype and so down on this. Prototype to me just looks like a boring brawler with a (very) big arena, while Infamous looks like it will have something to actually do other than dialling combos, which is nice.

My optimism towards prototype mainly comes from the fact that it's from the same devs as Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. To this day, Spider-Man 2 and Hulk: UD are my two favourite superhero games by far because they both nailed the exhilarating feeling of being that superhero in a sandbox environment. Imho, in terms of destruction and movement Hulk: UD even outclasses Crackdown. I see prototype as the next-gen evolution of Hulk: UD, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what they can do with the freedom of having their own ip.

inFamous, however, just doesn't appeal to me in the vids and screens I've so far. It all looks very generic and uninspired, not just the gameplay but also the art style, but I'll be very glad if it turns out to be good - we need more quality sandbox superhero games.

You've never played Hulk: Ultimate Destruction or Crackdown, have you?

I haven't played Hulk, but I got every single Orb in Crackdown. By the end of the latter you were very powerful, yes, but you were never flying around or wiping out an entire street with spiky black tentacles; jumping across rooftops was a rush because there was still an element of risk. Prototype is just too over the top and tips me over into apathy, a bit like if you picked Bloody Mess in Fallout 3 and ended up spending the entire game watching people explode. Whilst this might seem a bit out of the left field it's the same preference that makes me enjoy stealth games, from Riddick to Hitman: so long as you're hidden you're all powerful, but if you get caught out you're going to have something of a desperate struggle on your hands. I don't want to always be God.

I'm not saying inFAMOUS is going to be a GOTY contender or anything like that, but to me it seems more interesting than the — dare I say it? — Dynasty Warriors-esque excess of Radical's game. I'm not saying people aren't allowed to like it, of course, but they seem to be selling it as the game where you tear people in half with your "bad ass" superpowers and my eyes are practically glazing over at the prospect.

Well one thing is for sure, the people behind Prototype are better at making trailers than the folks Sucker Punch. I love Sly Cooper so I don't doubt this will be good, but it's not coming across as exciting in the footage so far as it might end up being.

I've said it before, there are too few superhero sandbox games, and hardly any good ones. Spider-Man 2, Hulk: UD, and Crackdown are the only good ones I can think of. It would be great if both Prototype and inFamous turned out to be as good as those three games, it would nearly double the amount of quality superhero sandbox games!

I don't think there's any danger of Prototype being too easy or unsatisfying. I think you'll be pretty vulnerable, powerful as you are. It might blow its load too early or be overly repetitive, however.

I'm still waiting for the brave game that starts you off as a normal man (and is a decent game with it), before slowly building up your powers over the course of the game until you're ridiculous.

Yep, I agree that's a genuine concern. It's cool how different the approaches are though. Infamous looks more like Prince of Persia in an open world in it's movement whereas Prototype is based more around destruction and power. They'll probably end up being very different beasts.

I get the same feeling about Prototype. This one , at least from the early videos, looked rather boring TBH, it's only on the more recent videos that it's started to catch my attention. I'm hoping it will be something good now.

They only seemed to show the guy in the same 3 or 4 areas also, are holding back a lot?

I mean, Prototype just looks like after I've seen all the moves you can do a couple of times there won't be anything else to do. But Infamous looks like there's an actual game there, with planned out missions and some nice platforming.

New trailer

It's gonna be good.

The bit near the start where he jumps off the high building looks really nice and I like the glowy hands / thruster thing going on that lets him glide around. It's more the grimy / dirty look to it that turns me off more than anything else, Crackdown looked so fresh when it came out whereas this doesn't really have its own identity. Still, if it's fun, which it looks like it will be, it's not the end of the world.

Well this interview sold me on the game. I'm liking how the fable-esque good/bad thing will work and the footage shows what looks like a massive city. I wasn't massively impressed when loads of videos just had the generic dude running around jumping and zapping shit but that looks like it has a lot of substance and exciting stuff going on.

People are already getting hold of it in the US, apparently the street date has been broken there
