Halo 3: ODST

Ahh man, don't halve the satisfaction of completing one of the best parts of the game by doing that.

Also, you don't really want NPCs taking your kills, do you?

To be fair, I've only gave it about 5 attempts so far, so I may well be able to do it. I just don't know if I can be bothered.

I did all of Halo 3 Legendary solo, with the exception of Cortana (and the last level, which is wholly possible solo, but that's because there ended up being 4 of us and we just steamed on through), because that's one cunt of a level that absolutely ruined the game for me.

Ok, so I've reached the first truly difficult part on my Legendary run through. As always, the other Marines might as well not fucking be there. Useless cunts.

Kizingo Boulevard. Who wants to give me a hand?

Apologies if you know this already but IIRC, there's a sniper rifle and maybe even a pistol in the vicinity of all those dead marines and the tall, olive green concrete blocks. They might make your life a little easier.

So what's all this talk of bad AI then? Put one of the NPCs on the back of a Warthog or other vehicle and they're devastating. They never miss a shot!

I actually prefer them over their human counterparts. They don't have to take bathroom breaks every 5 minutes, eat crisps really loud or talk behind your back. They're just... there for me.

Cheers. Though the enemy are quick to overrun our position, meaning it turns into CQB pretty fast.

I think they're great for the most part, but the way the marines fire the warthog's chain gun in relatively short bursts annoys me. In the original game, they were much more trigger happy. If they spotted an enemy, they'd fire continuously, rather than pausing now and again for no apparent reason.

I've been playing through on Heroic with Iron Skull on (one life). The shorter levels make it a good challenge. Uplift Reserve was tougher than I thought it would be because Wraiths can bring your efforts to an abrupt end, especially if you get cocky with them (which is tempting given all the different ways there are to take them out).

I was reminded last night of how amazing Theatre mode is. I watched an attempt at Uplift Reserve and spotted a female marine in a Ghost having an epic jousting battle with a Brute Chopper, something I'd been wholly unaware of when I was actually playing it. She fought valiantly but eventually bought it. Then my Warthog steams round the corner and blasts the Chopper to smithereens. Ha!

I also love watching how the AI reacts to all the goings on, and listening to their exclamations. It's fascinating watching damaged Brutes slope off to hide behind a tree, waiting to ambush you when you come past.

I overheard a wounded marine and a medic having a conversation about the safari park, with the hysterical marine going on about the humans being the zebras, and the Covenant are the lions. The medic says "I think you've stretched the metaphor" and the marine wails "oh god, is that bad??"

Never heard that, myself.

On this matter of skulls, i'd be interested in making ODST is a bit harder on my next playthrough. What other ones are there, again?

Shame the lag spoilt a few of those games last night, but my first taste of Firefight was very enjoyable, cheers guys :)

My replacement copy of Halo 3 arrived this morning (managed to lose my LE game disc) so i'm going to be ploghing through that this weekend. If anyone fancies some co-op or more ODST Firefight, give me a shout.

Thanks for the games guys!

@Babylon UK: That game we had on Lost Platoon? I'm amazed we actually finished that! I was on the phone the entire time bickering back and forth with my girlfriend. Best multitasking I have ever see myself do thus far.

Thanks again!

Yeah, latency seems to be a perennial problem with ODST; I spent a lot of last night effectively playing at 5fps. Hopefully Reach's rendition will fair better.

Still enjoyable, mind!

It was epic stuff thats for sure, surprised we beat the par score with just the 2 of us. Looking forward to going again tonight, I should be online around 11:30pm tonight though if anyone is about, will find my headset as well as I couldnt hear a word you were saying last night :P

I ran into that pair the other day. It was pretty funny just stood there watching it play out. And then I jumped on my 'hog, the medic jumped on the chain gun, and the hysterical marine with the stretched metaphor lay there, with his linguistic injury.

I also completed this yesterday after putting it down some weeks ago because of some atrocious A.I on one of the levels that basically involved them trying to drive a fucking warthog in circles whilst drunk.

It's excellent. Short, focussed and with little of the bloated, over-blown, trappings of the Halo universe that Bungie can't help but shoehorn in and ruin the end of their games with. After the disappointing end levels of Halo 3 I was burnt-out on the series, but ODST has made me at least interested for Reach again. I'll buy it next year when it's cheap, probably.

Disappointing end level to Halo 3? It was great. A proper homage to the first game, but even grander in scale.

Why didn't you like it?

The orange anus Flood level (was that Cortana???) and the Warthog run through the collapsing corrugated cardboard platforms were really buggy and frustrating to me. The Flood level fucked up my save and checkpoint and got to a point where it would get stuck reloading in an endless loop, so I had to start the whole level from the beginning. I got lost seemingly endlessly in the level too - hated every minute of it and have never liked The Flood. The Warthog run had moments where the vehicle would glitch and spaz out; there were at least a couple of occasions when I would fall through a solid floor for no reason (as in not one of the panels that were falling down). The technical issues definitely left a sour taste in my mouth that others may not have experienced but I also felt the level design took a nosedive towards the end regardless of that.
