Halo 3: ODST

what is up with that

I think it's that you're on foot mainly on your own and there's no heavy weaponry apart from the odd laser turret or brute shot.

So given each skirmish is 3 or more brutes and loads of grunts and shield jackals, it's just really intense combat.

Plus there's enough jackal snipers cough cunts cough, to make sure you re-do a fair few bits again after you round a corner to get insta killed. And there's hunters if I remember rightly.

All in all it's such a brutal level that it toughens you up for the rest of the game.

It helps that in the order I did it there was a nice jeep level, then a mainly tank level, with a bit of on foot, so by the time you are on the blowing up the naval intelligence building you're on foot again up but you've an immortal sidekick toting A1 weaponry to help out. So the later levels don't seem too bad in comparison to taking the world on yourself with nothing but an AR and a pistol.

Oh and pistol headshots in this are amazing.

The section in question is entirely shallow. You have tonnes of heavy weaponry everywhere - its not a challenge in the slightest.

It's almost like Bungie thought "this will do".

It's easily one of the weakest set pieces in the series.

I found it fun, but as one does just blowing stuff up.

It's more like Bungie thought, "For once, let's allow the player to cut loose and blow shit up, without having to worry about saving the rocket launcher for that one particularly tough enemy."

They took the opportunity presented by this spin-off game to do something a little different, although there are still quite a few challenging moments in there too; the section in Buck’s level that pits you against a mass of Covenant and a couple of Hunters, or the end of Mickey’s level where there are Brutes all over the place and a wraith backing them up, but there's nothing to shoot them with.

I meant what's up with playing on normal?

Anyway, you're preaching to the converted. I like the game. In fact i've been moved to defend it several times. But it is not without fault.

And critques could be made of it's approach in certain regards.

I am slightly baffled by how some praise it completely to the exclusion of other games in the series.

But I really enjoyed it, it's tight and well produced, some really excellent ground combat.

PLUS DEM WEAPONS.

I've been doing a solo legendary run on this in the run up to reach and while it has some tricky points it seems easier than the previous ones.

Really?

I've just finished Halo 3 Legendary, so I might try and get this done too before Reach.

Oh right, well normal, pah, etc.

I'd not praise it to the exclusion of the others and it does indeed have it's flaws but I think it's flaws are less pronounced than 2 and 3 though both 2 and 3 had set piece moments that taken in isolation were better than bits in ODST.

For example:

Taking down the scarab in odst took seconds each time i've done it. While taking them down in 3 each time was an epic battle. So although I was pleased with my prowess on odst, it wasn't as fun as the 20 minutes of tense battling you got in 3.

Fuck me, my memory is bad. There's a Scarab in ODST?

I've been playing through 3 on Legendary as a bit of a pre-empt and you can easily take the Scarabs down in a couple of minutes. You have a tank and missile pods. It's a piece of piss.

A tank?

If I remember rightly there's one earlier on and you have mongooses (mongeese?) and maybe a hog, and I remmber jumping a mongoose Evil kneivel stylee onto the scarab to kill it.

Then there's the bit later on with the marine flying things, I'd land on one - run in and blow it up then have a hard time getting onto the second. Problem was i was crap at flying those things compared to a banshee so struggled to take both scarabs down with its missiles. Don't tell me there's a tank on that bit and i've never found it? I must have done that fight at least 10 times.

The one on ODST is just too easy, fly banshee in, land on roof, jump out, fuel rod gun all round, jump off, get on new banshee, job done.

IIRC, at the beginning of that snowy section of the level, you get a whole load of reinforcements plus one scorpion.

Yeah i remember that, but aren't you at the top of a cliff, and when you get to the scarabs you get a little plane thing given to you?

So you can take the tank down? Am I just really stupid?

Fuck me I'm blown away by this, might need to find a copy of 3 to give it a go again.

The bit with the mongooses has missile pods scatter around the edges of the map, you can just spam missiles ate it's knees and rear.

The snowy one definitely has some kind of armament. The one where you are in the banshee thing, is maybe the trickiest, but you can mostly take it out from a far.

as did i, and talvalin (and many others) will attest to my hilarious lack of skill. if i can do it i'm pretty sure most people with the standard two thumbs will manage it.

speaking of talvalin, someone still owes me an endure achievement. three ridiculously close attempts and counting.

Yeah, there's a little road that winds its way down the cliffside to the area where the scarabs appear.

Bloody right they are! I restarted earlier this afternoon, on Heroic, I'm not good enough for Legendary solo and I'm not deluded enough to try it. Got a Jackal with the pistol from a fair distance (the reticule didn't even change to red), soooooooo satisfying, Rota in her half asleep "trying to recover from a 10 hour shift on A+E" state even congratulated me.

Ok, so I've reached the first truly difficult part on my Legendary run through. As always, the other Marines might as well not fucking be there. Useless cunts.

Kizingo Boulevard. Who wants to give me a hand?
