Final - No more updates here. It's a Halo game, renamed Halo: ODST.

Halo 3 expansion confirmed today as 'Halo 3: Recon', featuring an ODST (soldier which looks a lot like the chief) and set before the events of Halo 3. Will be a boxed and DLC title.

(Update 25.07.08: Bungie announcements to come, but not at PAX)

(Update 26.08.08: Gearbox working on Halo 4 'for next Xbox' rumour)

(Update 27.08.08: Gearbox 'has had conversations about Halo 4' )

(Update 25.09.08: Bungie timer runs out at 15.07 today. Big reveal seems to be incoming!)

(Update 26.09.08: Keep it clean teaser trailer. Seems to be some kind of campaign, possibly involving a 'helljumper'. Also features obscure Maddy reference.)

Apparently the vidoc for the cold storage map going up 7/7 hints at something bigger taking place - I'd be happy enough if they just got the cream of all the halo maps together in one uber-pack for download as I miss some of the Halo2 maps.

Also, the DLC is about to become essential to play matchmaking.

Bit soon for a Halo4 announce I'd have thought - they'd be better racking that up for the next console as a killer launch title.

Halo 4 is rumoured to be unveiled at E3. It's rumoured not to feature Master Chief and could quite possibly be the Peter Jackson project.

My money is on Gearbox developing.

I've seen this Gearbox + Halo rumour a load of times this year, but I doubt it. Gearbox are currently working on Brothers in Arms, Aliens and Borderlands, there's also an unannounced project that Randy's hyped a bit in the job posting as 'your dream project' and I don't see that as being Halo. Still I could be wrong.

Depends on how long the 360 is going to be out for. From all the talk so far it appears to be at least 5 years which is a bit too long for the franchise to wait. They could use the current engine and easily knock out another game before then and still make loads of easy money.

The original story came from some site I've never heard of. CVG seem to have picked up the rumour ad run with it. They're not exactly everyone's first port of call for news nowadays are they? This'll raise their profile a bit heading into the busiest week of internet gossip for games.

Edit: The story came from a site called Sarcastic Gamer which in it's own words: "Sarcastic Gamer provides up-to-date news and information from around the gaming world, presented with a biting wit and stellar sense of humor."

Features they've done include a 'hilarious' Wii-Fit parody, a look at the 'hype of Halo 3' and have a 'Broken News' section to their 'website'.

Look, if Disposable Media broke this news story, you'd call us liars. Having said that, if this thread continues to grow we'll host the story on our site in a shameless excercise in improving our Google Page Rank.

Really? The Chief is one of the most character-less characters in any game ever. I don't understand why people think he's cool.

Sarcastic Gamer hosts one of the most popular gaming podcasts out there, though never listened to it myself. From what I understand the guy has some decent contacts etc - Uzi/Xib might have a better idea.

Not that I mind one way or the other though, Halo co-op is alright and the first game introduced some good ideas, but its basically just rubbish isn't it?

I'd actually love to play a halo game as one of the lesser marines. Pinned down holed up against increasing amounts of Covenant with no chance of winning but having a hard as fuck Spartan bust in and haul you out would be immense.

You might even fear a grunt !

This must be a joke. Microsoft has done a lot of stupid things, but I still don't think they'll release a Halo game NOT developed by Bungie. They can't be THAT desperate.

A spin-off game like Halo Wars I can understand, but no - I don't believe MS will let someone other than Bungie do a real Halo game. On the other hand - Halo is the most interesting game on their platform, so who knows? They need something to boost their sales, now that the 360 is on its way out.

Maybe Halo 4 is even a launch title for their new console, which could be revealed at E3? Naaah, probably not...
