Replacement for buttermilk?

supposedly milk + lemon juice and leaving it a little while to curdle works. Sounds hideous to me though, so I've never tried it. Waitrose tend to stock buttermilk if there's one of those anywhere near you.

Otherwise a (very) quick google suggest 1 lemon to half a pint of milk and leave for 20 mins..

One tablespoon of white malt vinegar to one cup (250ml) milk, leave for ten minutes and it works perfectly.

Also, my preferred substitution, 1 1/4 teaspoons of Cream of Tartar to one cup of milk.
