It's snowing! - beautiful snow in games

You can't beat the first snow level in DKC. The first act of Icecap in Sonic 3 was good as well.

Remember the first time I saw footage of the DKC snow landscape on Bad Influence - and then the moment a few levels later where the snowstorm closes in. I genuinely thought there was no way the SNES could cope.

Also the Mana forest - great snow level. And Phendrana Drifts, of course

Stole mine! Anyway 1080 and assault on the control room in Halo.

Commados: behind enemy lines had Norwegain levels that had amazing snow and icey waters

Shenmue?

I woke up one snowy morning, turned on the DC, started up Shenmue only to find it had been snowing in game. That beautiful little village looked even more picturesque.

Felt like I was actually there somehow!

Cheers...

I would have to say 1080 snowboarding, the map "Katabatic" from Tribes 2, and Metal Gear Solid's opening areas.

I emphasise that Tribes 2 map - the snow effect on it was great.

I love that map! And the game.

Some great recommendations, particularly Metal Gear Solid and Shenmue. I got Metal Gear on Japanese import, and it was just such an overwhelmingly brilliant experience. It was the first game I can remember which I could zoom in on things, seeing the breath from the soldiers mouths etc. It was amazing, and to top it all of course it was snowing, and it felt just like Christmas.

Shenmue is just legendary.

I like the snow levels in Mario Galaxy, with Mario's footsteps messing up the stuff more and more as he runs around.

Just remembered another good one.. D2 on the Dreamcast. It was a sub par Resident Evil clone set in a snowy mountain range. The game was a bit pap but the atmosphere was great.. reminded me quite a bit of John Carpenters The Thing.

Cant find any decent screenshots

Was thinking about D2 all the way through this thread. Borrowed a friend's import and played it through to the end, but can remember very little about it, apart from the snowy setting and hunting sections. Obviously was pretty sub-par if it hasn't stayed in the memory!

Atmosphere wise, Metroid Prime wins out, particularly as it didn't feel like a token inclusion like so many snow levels. I've also got good memories of snow on Populous 2 and Powermonger back in the Amiga days.
