merman
Watched both codes today. Gutsy win from the Red Roses against France, who put up some formidable defence but were unlucky with injuries. Meanwhile a crummy opening ceremony for the Rugby League World Cup was followed by England demolishing Samoa.
disperse and recoagulate
Has anyone been to a RLWC game? I'm going to Australia vs Italy on Saturday night. I planned on getting way into this world cup but I've just not had the time.
Matt Defis
I don't think Wales will beat NZ in my lifetime.
the_debaser
The Ireland - SA match was brilliant. Hard and brutal rugby at times between 2 of the best teams in the world. Just hope Ireland aren’t peaking early before the World Cup.

Gabe
Bad weekend for English rugby, huh? Let's hope the cricketers do better in the T20 final tomorrow.
McFly
Scotland threw that away big time, should have had another 1 or 2 tries at least. Thought the ref had a shocker giving that knock-on against Hogg and the deliverate knock on and yellow card was well harsh, even the NZ commentator said so, he clearly went for a tackle. But regardless Scotland choked, the nerves were visible.

Matt Defis
And that Wales is how you play rugby. Edit sorry for the stream of consciousness
g wings
What a shower of shit Wales are. No clear plan at all. We let great coaches walk away, we chop and change our game plan and blood players only to then jettison them. What a waste.

hmm
Haven't seen that much of Wales this year, besides this match, but aware it's not been a great time. That was quite the capitulation today though. Didn't take enough advantage of the two consecutive yellows for Australia, and then just lost their heads in the last 15. That's 9 lost out of 12 this year now? Surely no one can survive that.
g wings
More of the same unfortunately. Pretty depressing to see how far Wales have fallen. The whole system has been screwed for forty years or more but a great squad and coaching team let us go beyond all that over the last decade or so. I’m not someone who subscribes to wanting to see my team lose in the hope of seeing change because everyone in Welsh rugby will carry on regardless. But… all this talk of Gats coming back. I don’t know. I guess he could shore things up and make us more respectable for the World Cup but the system will still be a shambles. I remember Jonathan Davies calling it out back in the 80’s and I didn’t really understand but he was right and nothing has changed.
Matt Defis
It's a complete mess from the ground up, regions should never have happened the way they did, it was a massive mistake that's finally come home to roost. Making 5 regions, leaving all the power in the clubs and expecting it to all come together somehow was never going to work, it was insane for them to think the valleys would travel to Cardiff to support a Cardiff team. The WRU has to do something soon to sort out this mess not just for the international level or the finances, they have to do it to save Rugby in Wales, my local club no longer has a youth team ffs.
gossi the dog
Pivac's thankfully been sacked. Gatland's replacing him.
Matt Defis
No surprises, feel a little sorry for Pivac, when he came into the job he said from the ground up it's about 20 years behind where it should be and was trying to change things I wonder if he focused to much on the wider stuff rather than just the team. Feels like going backwards though although I don't really think there's much choice at this point.
g wings
But Gatland did plenty to try and save the system in Wales. It can’t be saved in its current form though. I tried to be supportive of Pivac but his players management was dire and at times unforgivable. If Gats was just back short term that’s one thing but it’s interesting that he is lined up for multiple years. I wonder if sympathy or ambition drove his decision. Does he see enough in this squad to believe they are capable of a quick turnaround?
Rattlehead.ie
Not sure if he see's enough in the squad. In fairness to him he will man manage and get the best out of what he has. Better than Pivac in that sense as @g wingssaid. However, it really is just papering over the cracks in the WRU system, the same cracks that are starting to show in the RFU. McFly
Finn Russell signed to Bath for start of next season, should be good having him play in England.
phresh
No idea how Bath are going to come in under the salary cap next year considering a lot of the recent acquisitions. Interesting though, i've heard a few interviews with other Scottish players in the west country (Hogg, Hastings) who seemed really happy so maybe that had an influence. Like you say though, great to have him in the premiership and based on the way most games are being played it should be right up his street too,

phresh
Good shout, I forgot there were a few exceptions. I imagine there will be an exodus of English players anyway, a few have already announced moves to France and you can imagine a few more that won't make it to another world cup will probably do the same.
McFly
It's still big money for Bath considering the state of some clubs.
