Not sure if this deserves it's own thread but thought it was quite interesting:

Nintendo president claims that existing four year model may not apply to future console development.

Speaking at a recent Nintendo Australia financial results conference, Nintendo’s president Satoru Iwata has claimed that the established ‘four-year life cycle’ for games hardware has become “too inflexible an approach”, Next-Gen reports.

Stating that both the DS and Wii have a long way to go before Nintendo considered updating its hardware, Iwata stated: "I’m quite doubtful that such a notion of platform cycles can be applied in the future. As we continue our research and study for new hardware, when we will be able to launch a new kind of hardware will actually depend on when we can change entertainment completely, and so have a strong impact on people around the world.

Retailer bundling gives Master Chief a resurgence, helping to boost sales of ‘Halo 3’ by 46% and pushing Microsoft’s highly acclaimed title 3 places up the chart from No8 to No5

Looks like X360 hardware sales should be on the up this week, the 'Halo effect' at work :(

The delay of the Simpsons game on PS3 is unfortunate, would of been interesting to see how it would have sold versus the other iterations directly.

Stating that both the DS and Wii have a long way to go before Nintendo considered updating its hardware,

No surprise there, why shut off the biggest console in the world prematurely? Especially when they can keep getting people to buy software and Hardware (WiiFit). If Nintendo keeps up its annual casual killer app (Wii ____ titles) then they never need to move the needle on tech wise.

The delay of the Simpsons game on PS3 is unfortunate, would of been interesting to see how it would have sold versus the other iterations directly.

Sony apparently have co-marketed it, like Microsoft did with Madden. Big logo at end of ads and that.

Well co-marketing has helped Microsoft's efforts in gaining people's attentions for multi-platform games on their system, now it's Sony's turn to remind people they exist, doing it at the biggest sales period of the year is a bonus :(

Even Nintendo have been pimping the odd 3rd-party title as part of their Channel 4 sponsorship.

And The Sims 2: Castaway - only the Sony logos appear at the end.

I think EA just do that to shore up awareness for their games on the weakest format. Loads of EA stuff last gen had "For Nintendo Gamecube" at the end of their TV ads.

I'd say that platform holders pick and chooses areas where they think it will have the most effect. The Simpsons and FIFA are both good mass-market properties - there's the potential for some gains there. Microsoft did something similar with last year's FIFA.

The risk you take is, by the time people who've seen the ad get into the shop, they'll more than likely see that the titles aren't the exclusives the ad makes them out to be. Essentially you could be paying a fee towards advertising that actually boosts sales on all formats, rather than just your own.

European estimates from VGChartz are in: -

European/Other Hardware Estimates for week ending Nov. 4th

Nintendo DS - 205,938

Wii - 95,678

PSP - 67,276

PlayStation 2 - 67,264

PlayStation 3 - 54,599

Xbox 360 - 46,984

Game Boy Advance - 5,400

So, Wii down slightly, and PS3 still leading Xbox 360, but sales are down by around 15,000 whereas 360 sales actually climb this week.

UK Hardware Estimates for week ending Nov. 4th

Nintendo DS - 49,575 (4,244,029 in total)

Wii - 36,701 (1,369,918)

Xbox 360 - 13,050 (1,482,744)

PSP - 10,298 (2,140,499)

PlayStation 2 - 9,320 (9,520,730)

PlayStation 3 - 8,930 (438,856)

Game Boy Advance - 1,044 (5,043,197)

Wii sales drop by around 20,000 in the UK this week, though the suggestion around here is that it's supply constrained. 360 sales leap by around 3,000, whereas the PS3 appears to be falling back to pre-price-drop levels.
