If it had upscaling via HDMI I'd buy that like a shot.

All I want is a cheap PS2 to finish my leftover PS2 games that I don't want to miss out on. There are other games I haven't even bought yet that interest me, like God Of War 2, so this will save me a couple of hundred quid while I decide if I really want a PS3.

Interesting story on U.S. software sales: -

WHEN it comes to buying games for consoles, it appears that Xbox 360 users have the biggest collections.

According to Tech.co.uk, Microsoft sells more games per Xbox 360 sold than its rivals.

Xbox 360 gamers own, on average, seven games. PS3 owners have four. Wii owners have half a game less on average and since the box ships with two that means that every second owner has bought another game.

The research has come from NPD. Some of it is fairly obvious. The PS3 has not really been around that long for a gamers to build up their libraries, where as the Xbox 360 has.

However the Wii is an oddity. It seems that it might have shipped with its best game, Wii Sports. The next most popular game Wii Play is often only bought because punters get an extra Wiimote so that they can play Wii Sports with their special friend.

it's not really news though is it? We all know that.

hardcore folks buy lots of games... the 360 is a hardcore console.

And..now try and stay with me here...casual gamers buy less games and the Wii...are you with me...is a console that appeals to casual gamers.

Crazy idea I know.

Also, it's worth taking into account that the 360 has been out for longer and, as is natural, has more desirable games.

Things might change when the likes of Metroid (last week), Mario Galaxy, Sonic & Mario, Smash Bros, and more are all released.

don't forget Wii Fit for the pesky casuals coming in January.

EDIT:

anecdotal ahoy - the guy beside me in work is a 'new gamer' - uses his Wii mainly for telly browsing, wii sports and big brain. Never owned a console before in his life.

he's definately buying Mario Galaxy and Zakk and Wiki.

But he sits next to you scott - he probably doesn't have a choice ("OK, ok, I'll buy them, if you'll just shut up about them for a minute!")

So in Iwata's presentation he said

Now that we are approaching the year-end sales season and the biggest demand period, in order to supply as many Wii hardware units as possible, we have been making efforts to increase production. As of today, we have a maximum production capability of 1.8 million Wii hardware units per month, and we are going to keep this level of production for the time being.

How does that stack up to our monthly global Wii sales estimates?

Hmm. They sold 510,000 odd Wiis in the U.S. in September. 110,000 in October. Which means, to hit 1.8 million, they'd have to be selling 1.2 million in Europe every month, which they're not. However, plenty of people here claim they can't get Wiis in the shops where they are, so god knows where all these extra Wiis are.

EDIT - Would have to go with RubberJohnny there. They're not selling anywhere near that much, so they much be holding some back.

Loads on shelves here in Netherlands..

Yeah, a few people have said that. Sounds like it's just the UK that is horribly short of Wiis.

Will be interesting to see if loads of stock arrives on November 16th, that might explain the difference between what is being produced and what is being sold.

None available (new) in Swindon today. CEX selling unboxed Wii's for £240. Games exchange prices are slightly telling in regards to demand, 360 core - £100, Wii - £130, 360 premium - £140. Could be a reliability thing dragging the 360 prices down though.

Wii Preorder

Looks the Wii is pretty much out of stock in the UK.

Looks like Germany might be the same as Holland, as Amazon DE have them available, as well.

Nintendo, get more Wiis to the UK. I might pick one up for Mario! WHat's the longest a console has been before a price cut? I wonder if the Wii might break the record as there's currently no reason for Nintendo to drop the price of the Wii.
