Why has the PS3 done so badly over there considering the success of PS2? Not enough 'japanese' style games being released? I'm guilty of not following the industry at all recently but I expceted it to have done much better than it has. Can anyone see it looking up for them out there?

Jesus! I've just realised:

10. More Brain Age (DS) - 44,047 / 4,238,185

That's the SECOND Brain Age game, almost up to 4.5 millions sales already. Bloody hell.

you know - the west need to be careful here. Nintendo are training a SUPER SMART Japanese Army ready to take over the world. It'll be like Chin-pokemon in South Park.

The turnaround in Japan has really been unbelievable. Good to see Yoshi's Island up there, just got it last week and it's a cracking game.

According to Gamestop officials, over four million preorders have been made for Halo 3 on Xbox 360. Xbox Evolved has verified this information at five different Greater Cincinnati Gamestop locations, including Gamestop stores, EB Games stores, and Funcoland stores, all under the same umbrella. This information was verified at all locations, however company a document showing this information was not revealed.

In the coming months, if this information is verified this would be the most preordered videogame of all time. Many of Gamestop’s employees believe that a large portion of the preorders are being made by consumers that don’t even own a Xbox 360, that are just waiting for the price of the system to go down.

In comparison, Grand Theft Auto IV’s combined PS3 and 360 preorders at the chain of stores comes in a very distant second. Microsoft reported three weeks before the release of Halo 2 in 2004 that the combined retail outlet preorders for the title was 1.5 million,

Seems scottcr was wrong on this one.

While I'm not willing to predict how well either game will do, I'm not foolish enough to say they don't stand a chance of at least attracting more attention. However the more 1st party IP Sony come up with the better they will do.

Lair and Warhawk just don't have the weight behind them, as far as brands go anyway. If you asked anyone the question "What game would make you buy a PS3?" I doubt very much either of them would be high on the answer list.

People are a big bored of MGS now, aren't they?

Are there sales figures for the the series?

Edit: There are.

Okay, so 3.1 million is pretty good, ahem, but still a masive drop off and the PS2 had a HUGE installed user base by then. Will it convince people to buy a PS3?

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (7 million)

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (3.7 million)

MGS3 deserved to sell so many more copies. Fucking MGS2...

I think part of Snake Eater's problem was the general disappointment with SoL and the lack of trust it created. The Resident Evil effect... after ending a truly great game with a bunch of likeable characters you are invested in, they detour into what seems like a couple of sidestories. People want Snake, not variations on him. MGS4 looks to deliver in that respect at least. I know it's the only thing that tempts me towards a PS3.

I don't think they're especially marketable properties in the west, though.

Not in the MGS, Halo or GTA league.

On their own right they may be, but not compared to those no. But you can count on your two hands the number of franchises that are in that league, so I'm not sure that proves anything.

As for MGS3, it didn't get anything remotely like the publicity 2 or 4 have had at all.

I don't think it's a killer app but Lair looks great. It's one of the few games that's really got my attention and would be the kind of new IP that could persuade me to buy a PS3.

Somewhat worringly (but still amusingly) Sony CEO Tretton seems to think the likes of Lair and Warhawk are going to turn the tide this year.

Why is it ammusing?
